Reduction Lino
The first introduction to print I had was last year for my portfolio. I created a reduction lino and I knew by the end of it I wanted to do many more print works. So, I decide to do one for this last semester.
First i planned it out and started some sketches, I also planned the colours.
I used yellow red and black as I felt they contrasted well while also complimenting each other.
Suzannah’s Print
We were asked to work with a print provided by Suzannah O’Reilly. I wasn’t sure on what to do when interacting with it so I attended the workshops on Tuesday (27/04/2021). From there I tried working with it digitally and I think it finally helped capture the alternative reality I was working toward.
The object of the print reminds me of a gate so I used a character going through and disappearing almost getting lost. I had otherworldly large mushrooms as a border before and after the “gate” to almost frame it and give the impression that it is a different world.
I followed a similar idea with the physical print using lino and monoprint. In the physical version I added a path to show that there is some sense in this new world and a more smoky or hazy look to still keep it mysterious.
Monoprint
Monoprint is a very easy form of printing, I enjoy how sketchy and undefined you can make it. I also like how you can use certain amounts of pressures to add to your piece. I used monoprint last semester for the first time and I will definitely use it in the future as it is very unique.
Gouache
I was gifted gouache paint by a friend. It was the first time I had used gouache. Having worked with acrylic, watercolour and oil, I expected it would be similar to watercolour. While it is similar, the opacity surprised me.
I thoroughly enjoyed working with this medium and would like to work with it a little more in the future.
Using a blue pencil, I worked out the perspective I wanted and the framing. I then roughly and lightly sketched out my idea. When that was done, I then marked out the “doorway” on the next page. I waited till the end to cut that out as I knew the page would be flimsy and I didn’t want it to rip before I was ready to glue it down. I then began painting.
Mushroom pt.2
After completing the solid mushroom I moved on to the second one. I made a mistake in transferring the ink but I feel it worked well in the end.
After finishing the cutting and the black ink tests I moved on to colour. I used red and blue. I had an old newspapers sheet that was more pink then tea stained so i used that to add dimension. I feel it also pulls in a sense on reality in the strange place.
Mushrooms
A big part of creating that solid switch from reality to “wonderland” is the many animals, flora and plants in general. While I very much enjoy the snarky flowers I have always preferred the larger then life mushrooms. I believe this is due to how fragile, small and kind of miss able they are. The colour variation is striking on some mushrooms but the most recognizable, fly agaric. The iconic red with white spots.
I created a small lino that fitted more like a large lino stamp. I made 2 variations as I wanted one to be simple and plain and another with more detail.
Study
It has been a good few years since I watched Alice in wonderland (2010) so to jog my memory I re-watched the movie and took notes.
Mindmap
Story
The first thing I thought of was multiple movies, shows, books, manga and anime. So I listed out any and all I could think of that had a captivating story/storyline.
i found multiple of my choices had a plot line of alternate realities or a shift from reality. For example, Alice in Wonderland (the original movie: 1951, 2010 and 2016)
So to help delve deeper into that mindset I’m thinking of looking into alice in Wonderland scenery or flowers and mushroom.
First week
15th March 2021
This week I went to @eoinmclsad paint class, I looked into @k00263494 tumblr and looked for patterns, pieces or ideas I really enjoyed. I found reoccurring patterns/ patterns that were slightly different but similar. She used colour freely and frequently. This brought a lot of life to her work and ideas.
This is the sketchbook page I created from looking through her page.
I used highlighters as they were closest to me but they give a new distinct look to the recreation of the honeycomb, especially under blue led lights.
Statement
I was interested in many forms of movement in the beginning including physical movement and metaphorical movement. So, I wanted to look at time but didn’t have many ideas so I turned to reflections (memories). In this I’m looking at many of my past memories. So, in the last few weeks I’ve been trying to tie everything into old memories. I’ve also been looking into my childhood as I feel my childhood might have a good few connection I could use in my project.
So, starting off, I was looking at the ocean as it’s one of the first thing I thought of as there is a multitude of movement at the ocean with the tide and the sand being pushed and pulled. But after looking at that and settling on reflections and memories I looked at the Cliffs of Moher, I hold a good memory with the cliffs and that helped kick off my ideas.

Part 2
Last of gesture drawing
Lithography workshop (was unable to do this as I had no oil based ink.)
Over the last 2 months I’ve been in a lot of pain wit my back so I wanted to attempt visualising it. these were my first plans.
Monoprint workshop was included in Des’ casting a block print with plaster.

More Patterns
Stamps
I attended stamps workshop as well as the pattern workshop with Suzannah O Reilly this week. I enjoyed immensely and I feel it’s given me a few ideas for my project. I created a stamp using a potato and scalpels. I used my drypoint as a reference and started carving. I kept it quite simple as I didn't want to make the potato too soft.
I also created some pattern with the potato.
Painting
Village
The village closest to me as a child is called Cree. It consists of one long road and a cross road, and somehow 2 pubs. My favourite part of it is walking over the bridge to the little well. When I was a child my aunt and I used to walk the 20-minute walk with her family to Cree and get a pound bag and head across the bridge to the little well.
I’m also including the sketchbook page planning it out.
