Final Statement

•For the movement project my chosen electives were Ceramics,printmaking and painting.

•For this project i explored movement through skin.

•what i found sucessfull in my project was my clay pieces i just found myself going back into the ceramics room the most during the project. i think this is because i enjoyed it the most because i enjoyed working with my hands and i was so happy with how my pieces were turning out.

•what i found unsuccessful was probably my time management skills and my ability to balance my time with my other coursework. This resulted in my lack of painting pieces and workshops.

•I focused on skin by looking from a textural and abstract point of view. I really enjoyed including textiles in my work.

i started this painting of tattooed skin. I thought this showed how movement of how the skin reacts and responds to different things. This is a tattoo of mine that didn’t heal properly cause my skin rejected it. I just lay down base colours and design and i will later go back to this to add in finer details so it resembles skin.

DAVID HAMMONS

Hammons created hand-drawn realism into a contemporary realism of found objects + materials. Beginning in the late 1960s he began using his own body, greasing it and imprinting it on paper to make body prints. These x-ray like figures were punctuated with exacting details of skin,hair ,clothes and body parts.

i picked this artist because i feel like his work relates to my project of movement of skin and im interested in using his technique of smearing his or another’s body with grease then pressing it against paper then covered the imprint with charcoal and powdered pigment, resulting in intimately direct indexes of faces ,skin,hair that exist in spectral portraits and physical traces.

NATASHA MAYO

Natasha Mayo is a researcher,writer,practicing and senior lecturer in ceramics at cardiff school of art and design.

I picked this artist because she relates to my project of movement of skin.

After researching “ceramic artists who work with movement i discovered Natasha Mayos exhibition “The expression of flesh and skin” after looking at the exhibition i am interested in combining the technique she used to create movement in the skin, vigorous action forces the brush hairs to separate and create light patchy marks over the bum and belly and how the energy of movement can be visualised with ceramics and how ceramics can be used in a photo manner.

On Thursday i continued making latex layers of my clay tile. I made them different thicknesses so i could get different textures.

Today i painted my ceramic pieces with underglaze and tomorrow i will glaze them. I used browns,reds and yellows to paint them so they represented skin. I left one tile not painted and used latex on it. I plan on repeating this process with the latex to have multiple prints of the tiles, then i plan on stapling the latex pieces together and using it to paint on and use for my textured portraits.

process pics of one of my textured portraits. I like how this is turning out but i need to fix the proportions of the face as i’ve made the face too big and the features too small. I decided to do some portraits so i could show the movement of skin through time and ageing. The first portrait is a self portrait, I then plan on starting a portrait of my nanny and niece just to have a good variety of ages.

RELIEF PRINT WORKSHOP

on Tuesday i did the relief printing workshop with suzannah. In this workshop we started by designing 12 stamps and then picking the best one to be carved onto the lino blocks. Suzannah then gave me the idea of flesh painting. So i printed my arm,hands and fingers really lightly so i could get the skin textures into the paper

SCREEN PRINTING WORKSHOP

On Monday I did the screen print workshop with Fiona. I found this workshop hard to get my head around just because it took me awhile to cut out my stencil and figuring out how to cut my stencil.

i started with a stencil of the pattern of stretch marks on skin but it turned out to be a failure.

I then decided to do a stencil of a young child, my plans with this was to do 2 more stencil of a face but getting older to show the difference in skin over time but then I decided against the idea.

I tried to print on this fabric for a textured print but the fabric was too thick and my chosen colour wasn’t dark enough so it didn’t work.

On wednesday i started painting on my chosen fabrics. I chose bubble wrap and this snake print fabric to paint on.

On the snake print i plan on painting a self portrait. I started by just marking out some base colours. the snake print gives the painting this weird texture with the paint on top.

Then i painted a skin tone colour onto the bubble wrap. My plans with this are unclear but i might paint over some of the bubbles with a bit of red in an airbrushed way to create the appearance of acne on the bubble wrap. In relation to my chosen theme “movement-of time-through-skin” this would be referring to puberty and how the skin changes and breaks out

Artist research

Ariana Page Russell is a visual artist with the skin condition “Dermatographia” also known as “skin writing”

“She creates images that explore the skin as a document of human experience using her own hypersensitive flesh as a canvas”

Even though Ariana works with print and photography i’ve chosen to use her for my artist research for my ceramic pieces. When i was making my ceramic pieces i felt really inspired by ariana’s skin work and by using clay i feel like it was the best material to use for that risen skin effect.

On monday i didn’t join a workshop instead i did research for my project.

This research consisted of sketchbook work,primary and secondary resources.

For my sketchbook i wanted to have a page full of textures that’s are associated with skin. I went to the fashion/textiles room to gather some scrap fabrics that i thought would work.

I gathered some satin/silky fabrics some rough and scratchy fabrics and then some patterned fabrics.

primary sources

I took these 3 photos of my nanny and uncle to collect primary sources of skin. I took zoomed in photos so i could see the textures of the skin. I chose to take photos of them so i could show the differences in the skin textures in more older/mature people compared to younger people

Here i took pictures of my two nieces. My nieces both have skin conditions so they were perfect for getting primary sources for my project. The top two photos show their eczema, I think they will be really useful for making my textured skin slabs in ceramics.

For showing the movement of time through skin i also took photos of my niece allanah because she has a very round face with plump rosy skin that shows her youth and her eyes because she’s only 5 and you can barely see the fine lines and creases under her eyes compared to the photos of my nana or uncle were they are more visible.

Then lastly i got a picture of my other niece grace and her face is really inflamed and irritated. Looking closely you can start to see these bumps and shapes throughout her face which makes a really nice textured pattern. I feel like i could print the pattern and use it for a background for a painting or something.
