Week6 day4: was spent making sure everything on our project wall is neat and where it should be and setting up our area to display our work.
Week 6 day 3: Was spent fixing up a PowerPoint we started, that showed off everything for our pitch. Unfortunately, something went wrong when sending the PowerPoint and we weren’t able to show this one when presenting our show. It was disappointing but it’s a lesson to have these things sorted out before hand.
The presentation otherwise went well, we read off our script while we showed off our work on the projector and explained why our show would be worth funding. The lectures said we started strong but with just a few corrections here and there such as making the PowerPoint less about who did what. Also the general thought that our group had when we were thinking of what we would do differently next time was having a tighter schedule so we keep on top of everything, and I felt the same way. But other than that I’m really happy and proud of all the work we’ve done.
Week 6 day 2: the first part of the morning was dedicated to figuring out what we wanted to say for our introduction to the presentation, and then also figuring who wanted to talk about which process of making our show. Once we figured that out, the rest of the day was just finishing up any little bits that needed to be done. I spent the day neatening out the scripts. It was hard to keep it short and sweet and yet hold enough information about the show. At first the scripts didn’t have enough in them to make it at least 5 minutes, so after some fluffing up, it became a little better but my team and I will rehearse them and decide what needs to be tweaked.
Week 6 day 1: my team and I regrouped and discussed what needed to be done that day and then we each dedicated ourselves different tasks. I was put in charge of making some interior studies of Alanzo’s home and some exterior studies too. It was hard to find many descriptions or paintings of bedrooms during this period but I managed to draw a basic idea of what the rooms would look like in the end.
I found that a lot of houses built during this period had wooden supports shown on the ceiling, the living room was the most decorated to show off to guest, and beds often were built in with a canopy. I did three drawings of three rooms we would see in the show, this included the parents bedroom, Alanzo’s bedroom and the sitting room. I did a drawing of each room from the point of view of a person, then I did a 3D drawing of the rooms to show where all the furniture in the room goes. For the exterior study, I drew Alanzo’s home with water colour. I was experimenting with the colours and I’m not sure if I’m happy with it, but it gives you a rough idea of what colour pallet the house would have.
Week 5 day 4 (24/4/26) on Friday the our lecturers assessed the progress we’ve down. This was really helpful to figure out what needed to be improved and where we needed to go from where we are. It made me realise that I needed to revisit my characters designs as they still didn’t quite match the style we’re going for. So equipped now with some water colours I went back over my characters again. I think they’re a little better now but on Monday I’ll ask my team to help me improve them further. I also finished the character lineups and the silhouettes. These were a little rushed so I’ll also go back over them on Monday to make the look a little better.
Week 5 day 2 (21/4/26)For the duration of Tuesdays class I focused on doing starting a strorboard that shows one of the key moments in our show, which included the day that Alanzo said goodbye to his family and home. I started by doing some research into his hometown ( Bruges in France) then also looking at some drawings of towns and cities during the renaissance period in France, this helped to construct Alanzo’s home and town which is shown below.
Then I moved on to doing a very rough sketch of how I wanted the storyboard to go. This really helped to figure out what shots would work and how I wanted the dialogue to go. Then I started to make a neater version of my storyboard. I made the mistake of drawing the scenes out in square spaces when I should’ve been doing the shots in rectangles ( helps to see how it would translate onto the screen) so going forward I will draw out the scenes in rectangles.
My group and I also worked on how the ending should go as the end is another key scene in the series to show Alanzo’s growth. Hence with the help of researching what was going on in the area (Italy) and the characters (the Medicis) during the time,we came up with this, (shown below).
Week5 day 1 (20/4/26): for Mondays class we decided that the style that would best suit the show would be something realistic yet with some cartoony characteristics. We loved the style of one of our teammates in particular and thought that it would suit the show perfectly, so with this in mind, we started doing some character turn around sheets. We all assigned each other different characters to work on. I decided to do our main character’s (Alanzo) family. I did my best to do the style justice but it required very soft colours that can be achieved with watercolours and with no outlines. unfortunately I don’t have any water colours so I used watered down acrylics. Hopefully when I get the chance to I’ll redo these drawings with water colour. We also started doing a silhouette sheet which made me realise that some of my character designs aren’t very strong, so that is another thing to keep in mind for the future.
Above is the mood board we use as defence for designing our characters.
Week4 day 4: Today mostly consisted on neatening up on some notes and making some mood boards for Alanzo’s family. Creating a sort of character bible for them. I researched a few character that I thought had simpler personality types and looks as the characters and added them into my inspiration.
Week4 day3: We took a trip to FOTA wildlife park to develop our knowledge on animal anatomy and improve our life drawing skills. Before going I did a little bit of search into what animals the park had to offer then I selected a few i definitely wanted to draw and studied their skeletons to prepare myself. It was a lot of fun drawing the animals, it was at times difficult as they tended to move around a lot but it was really helpful for improving my drawing techniques and build up a bank of knowledge for drawing these animals
Some pictures from the park are featured below
Week4 day2: we stuck all our research onto our wall and evaluated what we needed to do. We decided to each dedicate one character between us to flesh out more and to think of possible designs for. We also started making a bible for our story and this helped to flesh out story out more and tie up any loose ends in our plot.
It was really helpful to talk through ideas as it helped to determine what was worth while getting into more detail with and what wasn’t going to work. I focused today on designing Alanzo’s family, and what their role is in the story and in society. I also was studying what they would have worn during this period. I find it hard sometimes to research fashion during certain time periods as it can greatly vary due to decades and place, so I consulted a history fashion expert (Jenny Murray) who helped me a lot to figure out what the family would wear and what they absolutely shouldn’t wear. ( all notes on drawings)
Week4 day1: This week we’re put into teams and assigned a nursery rhyme with a random time period and genre. Our team got ‘Row row your boat-‘ in the renaissance period in the adventure genre. With this we started to brain storm and we came up with a boy who comes from a merchant class that works for the Medici family in Italy. They’re wealthy family that live in France but the father of the family falls ill and thus the boy (Alonzo) must embark on the journey to deliver the goods to the traders to get the money for his father and family. And while trying to reach Italy he encounters some strange and wicked things in the places he lands.
All the while he’s also trying to keep the illusion of the dream like adventure he always thought he would have in his letters to his parents. We thought about adding pirates that would save his sinking vessel and take him to Italy but in the end we didn’t think it was strong enough idea so we abandoned it. The day was mostly dedicated to researching the perioud and what was happening in different countries during the time and figuring out what characters we were going to create. We also made of mood board of media that we can use as inspiration
Week 3 day3 (26/3/26). Today we were in the computer labs to animate our mini-me. First I had to import all our photos to our computer, then edit the photos of my mouths, backgrounds and my mini-me to cut out anything I didn’t need. Then once I saved all our images as files, I put them all on to Premier pro to animate the mouths on the face. We were taught that through some editing, we can sink up the mouths with the audio we chose.
I tend to struggle a lot when it comes to computers and I had a lot of help through out the process but I’ve learned a lot from it. I was trying to edit my audio to cut out parts that I didn’t need, but this proved to be very difficult and I couldn’t understand why it wasn’t working. But I was introduced to learning careers hub and I hope I can learn to improve over the Easter break.
Week3 day2 (24/3/26) today consisted mostly of getting my mini-me ready to be photographed. Before I did so, I recorded my voice lines. I first said my name and then the sentence I thought of. I messed up the lines at first and it was a bit odd hearing my voice come from the recording but I was happy with it.
Before I went to the photography room I reinforced my mouths with cardboard so they wouldn’t crumple as much. I found photography a little hard as I kept kicking the tripod with my phone on it, and when swapping out the eyes I didn’t mark exactly where they should go so the eyes can sometimes look a little wonky. But after retaking some photos, I was happier with what I had. The eyes still look a little wonky but I actually think it suits the style so I’m happy to keep them as they are.
I also took some photos of my backgrounds for when it’s time to green screen my mini-me on to it. And some photos of my mouth shapes before and after they were cut out.
Week3 day1 (23/3/26): for the beginning of class we spent the day outside doing a live dog drawing session. It was really difficult to make very detailed drawings when your subject is constantly moving but it was good practice to try and draw as much as detail as possible in a short amount of time . It was also really nice to pet the doggies :)).
After the session, I started to work on drawing out my mouths for my mini-me. I spent some time first studying the video I made of myself saying my chosen sentence, and I also spent some time looking at the animated show of ‘Charlie and Lola’ to see how they make their mouth shapes. Once I was happy with the mouth shapes, I cut them out and stuck thumb tacks at the back of them so that I can easily swap the mouths out on my head when the time comes to animate it.
Finally I secured my head in place on my body by using toothpicks. Then I added some last few details to my mini me, such as adding a nose piercing and adding dyed black wool around the edges of my body to give the illusion that it’s 2D.
The image above is the video I watched to study Charles and Lola’s animation and also the above footage shows me saying my voice lines.
Week2 day4 (20/4/26): I continued on working on my body and glued the fabric onto the cardboard base. While I waited for that to dry, I stuck all my features on to my face. When doing this, I was advised to felt on a nose instead of sticking on a paper cut out of it so there would be less risk of it falling off. It was hard deciding where I want to place my nose on my face so used some transparent paper and drew the largest shape my mouth would make before finally deciding where to felt.
Next, I cut out a collar that would go on my shirt and I outlined it in black marker, the same way you would see things outlined in the same way in the book. I also cut out a tie and stuck it behind some black fabric to give it the same look.
I’ve now pinned all the pieces together to see if I like the placement of all the different parts. There still some small details that need to be added and I still need to decide how I’m going to stick my head on my body. But otherwise I’m happy with what I have so far.
Week2 day3 (19/3/26) I begun to map out where I wanted to put my facial features on my face. I’ve decided to make my features out of paper and to glue thumbtacks at the back of some of them so I can easily exchange them if wanted them to move. I also felted in some details such as the blush around my cheeks.
A lot of the day was trialing different ways to make my hair as I wanted to be textured like how some of the characters in my book are. I decided to use wool but because of the waves in my hair, this proved difficult to do as wool can’t hold its form. So I tried to just stick it on to cardboard that’s cut into the shape of my hair, but I didn’t like how flat it looked so I scraped it.
Then I tried moulding tinfoil into the right shape and glued the wool directly to it. But the wool didn’t stick well so it was also scraped. Next I tried glueing wool onto fabric then sewing it onto the tinfoil mould. But it was too bulky so it was scraped. Then with some guidance I realised that if I just folded the fabric the way I liked and pinned it in place on my head, it looked the way I wanted. Finally I glued some wool onto paper to frame around my head.
I finished the day off by building my body out of cardboard. I did it by cutting out two sides of the body and sandwiching them together with using a strip of cardboard (I used the same techniques I learned in sculpture).
Artist Research: Lauren Child
Lauren Child was born 29th of November 1965 in England. She went to two art colleges, worked under the artist Damien Hirst and also designed lampshades before becoming a children’s book illustrator. She is an award winning book author responsible for ‘Charlie and Lola’, ‘Clarice Bean’ and ‘Ruby Redford’. Her style consists of collaging drawing paper cutouts, fabric design, photo montage and imaginative typeset.
When making her books she starts with first making the story which she finds to be the easiest part of the process as she mainly takes inspiration from her childhood and the things she sees in her every day life. She admits it’s the process of designing the pages that gets tricky sometimes.
Her materials she uses to collage includes paint, photos, textiles and computer artwork to achieve this scrapbook look. Through out my project I’ve tried to use as many materials that are at my disposals to achieve the same look for my landscape. As well drawing from real life like she does
I also studied how she designs her characters, all her characters have certain characteristics that make them so unique to Lauren Child’s style. For example they all have; small oval ears, either flat or textured hair, oval eyes, scribble nose, everything outlined with a black marker and of course their clothes being made from prints of real textiles. I paid careful attention to all these details while creating my own mini me.
