Givenchy (Alexander McQueen) 1999
Alexander mcqueens work has always stood out to me for his unique style. This collection embodied McQueen’s avant‑garde flair fused with couture precision, pushing Givenchy’s aesthetic toward dramatic color, ornate embellishment, and unabashed theatricality. I loved this look in particular for how ethereal it is
Jean Paul Gaultier spring 1999
I love the combination of drapey fabric with these bold metallic shapes
Schiaparelli fall 2024
This look is a lot different to others I looked at as it’s very structured and modern but the feather details on the shiny reflective metal creates such an interesting effect
Die sechs Schwäne
“The six swans” is a German fairytale found in “Grimms fairy tales” from 1812. It is about a princess whose six brothers are turned into swans by their step mother. She discovers that the only way to lift this curse is to spend six years sewing shirts out of “aster flowers” (I don’t know what aster flowers are I remember it being nettles) but she must not speak at all for these six years. She dedicates herself completely to this but over the years several things come in her way such as a king decides to marry her and then she’s sentenced to be executed but just before she is meant to be executed the six years are up, she is able to speak again and the curse is lifted. All of her brothers are turned back into humans except the youngest as she didn’t have time to finish one sleeve on his shirt and he is left with one wing.
I clearly remember reading this fairytale as a child and while I was developing this project it kept coming into my head inspiring me to focus more so on swans and wings. I also found several illustrations from different versions of the story that I found very beautiful specifically with the colours used.
Developing designs
Sketchbook pages
Maker station
During this semester I also spent some time in the maker station with Ann.
We started with simple sketches and used Adobe Illustrator to turn them into digital drawings and then moved on to Rhino to try several different effects such as mirroring, repeating and cutting
I then brought my design to the laser cutter to transfer it my design onto fabric
Collage
To begin to develop my images into looks I photocopied and cut out parts from my moodboard and primary images and arranged them on a model in several ways that I found visually appealing to create ideas for garments
Primary images
To begin this project I chose several images to use as a primary source from which to develop my ideas. I chose these specific images as I enjoyed the fairytale like vibe they have in my opinion. They all have a specific mix of darkness and light tones making objects look like they are emerging from the dark. I wanted to put a focus on the way these things reflect and shine
Fashion week 1
6 looks titled “on my knees”
For the first week we were given a group project. Each member brought in four articles of clothing from home and mix and match the combined pieces, draping them over mannequins in interesting ways to create a new look.
Self assessment
1. Learning Outcome 1: Aptitude & Ability in Elected Areas: What skills or strengths do you think you demonstrated in these electives? What did you learn that confirmed your choices? Where did you struggle, and how did you improve?
I think creativity was one of the most important things to me in this project in order to apply my theme to all three electives. Where I struggled most was verbalising my ideas but as it went on I think I improved in that regard
2. Learning Outcome 2: Creative Use of Materials, Media, Processes: Which materials or processes did you explore? What creative risks did you take? How did your material choices support your ideas?
During this module I did fashion, print and ceramics. I found fashion quite challenging as I had not worked much with textile or designing looks however I did really enjoy it
3. Learning Outcome 3: Research & Contextual Understanding: What research did you carry out? Which artists, designers, or movements influenced your work? How did your research appear in your final outcomes or Tumblr?
The designer that I think influenced my work most was Betsey Johnson, I took a lot of inspiration from her work particularly in the fashion elective but I think that style carried through to other electives also
4. Learning Outcome 4: Creative & Conceptual Development: What ideas were you trying to communicate? How did your concepts change as the project developed? What parts of the project show your conceptual thinking best?
I initially chose this project as it felt very accessible to me and I felt as though I had lots of primary sources from photographs I had taken at parties. As I continued the project it became more so about the people I’m with. It is hard to say which parts show my conceptual thinking best as I made a very conscious effort to divide my attention evenly in most aspects
5. Learning Outcome 5: Commitment, Motivation, Self‑Reliance: How consistently did you work throughout the electives? How did you manage your time or overcome challenges? What evidence shows independent thinking or initiative?
I did as much work into my project as I would’ve like to have as I was caught up with other things several times over the course the last six weeks. Despite this I think I managed to make the most of the time I did have in work shops and I found myself to be more motivated in all 3 electives than I had been previously
6. How did you bridge your three elective areas? We had 5 intended learning outcomes for you but did you discover any unintended learning outcomes?
I think what helped me most to bridge my three electives was the collection of primary research I had gathered before I began working in any electives. This provided me with a clearer idea of what I wanted and also inspiration to fall back on

Dasha Plesen
Sasha plesen creates her work by cultivating bacteria in a Petri dish, I am interested in the composition and vibrant colours created in many of her works.
Brian Rochefort
Brian Rochefort is a mixed-media sculptor, he creates a variety of different organic forms through colour and texture. When I came across his work it stood out to me because of the messy style that somehow manages to be quite beautiful

Ceramics
For the second week of ceramics I began by putting underglaze on the pieces that had been put in for a bisque firing. While I was doing this Elaine gave me the idea to mix the underglaze with a small bit of soap to create a bubble pattern. I really enjoyed doing this and found it very fitting to my theme so I continued to create more tiles layering different colours of bubbles.
I wanted to try different ways of printing images onto my work. For the first way I put a layer of coloured slip onto a page then I drew into the slip, removing certain areas to create a drawing, once that was done I stuck it onto a sheet of clay and applied pressure until it was stuck on. I chose to do the disco ball I had done previously in a woodcut print.
Another way i tried to create an image on clay was to cut out an image from paper and stuck it onto the clay, I then painted the clay with coloured slip before removing the paper to reveal my image. I also did the opposite by using the page where I had cut out my image. Painting the people in black.
Ceramics
We started this week by mark making with ink on paper based on a verb list that corresponds to my theme. I chose words such as bubble and spin. For this we used a variety of different tools such as cardboard and twigs to making different marks. Although I was impatient to start using clay I did find this process enjoyable.
Once we had chosen which parts of our drawings we wanted to take inspiration from we went on to create the paper and ceramics pieces. I tried to capture the swirly slightly messy style when making the ceramics. This proved slightly difficult sometimes when it came to making sure all the parts were stable
