For @blackmetalchameleon
At the MTV awards 1996, Metallica were told before their performance that they weren’t allowed to use any curse words. Annoyed by this, they caused mayhem by playing “Last Caress” and “So What” - songs with references to murder, bestiality, and full of expletives - instead of their scheduled “King Nothing”. The Metallica segment was removed from all future broadcasts of the program.
It's Metallica's anniversary, but first, james posting
I love this picture of the guys... James is so fluffy
Tomorrow it'll have been 34 years since my idol's death. Tomorrow it'll have been 34 years without Cliff Burton. This man and Metallica were my guardian angels for a summer full of loneliness and depression. Cliff Burton led me to the person who truly saved me, and I will forever be grateful to his spirit guiding me into the world of metal. There will never be another cliff, no one will ever rock the rickenbacker and the crazy flying red hair like he did. No one will ever pull off denim and denim like he did. Cliff was an amazing bass player, an extremely talented musician and such an open person to everything around him. I hope he is having a good time in the kingdom above.
Master of Puppets part 1 - It’s Electric – abt Cliff (1)
Lars: where there any other things that came from Cliff and ended up being cornerstones of the record?
Kirk: well, there is that intro to Damage
Lars: of course
Kirk: other than the intro to Damage and Orion
James: well, Leper Messiah
Lars: right, the bass line, with the pre-verse kinda thing around the mid riffs and all that
James: right, I think that the actual title was his
Kirk: no, it was mine
Lars: oh-ho, was it yours? Ask Kirk!
Kirk: I am the one who ripped it off! I am the thief!
Lars: who ripped it off from David Bowie, you or Cliff?
Kirk: I did.
Lars: *laughs*
Kirk: but, y’know, I wrote to David Bowie’s bus: I said “sorry for ripping it off”, so–
Lars: and David Bowie goes “I thought it was Cliff!”
Kirk: *laughs*
James: “Oh, it was you? I am ot ok with that.”
All: *chuckle*
Master of Puppets part 1 - It’s Electric – abt Cliff (2)
Kirk: I just remembered something: Cliff was a big REM fan
Lars: oh yeah, I remember that
Kirk: and he actually turned us into them
Lars: sure
Kirk: again
Lars: Lifes Rich Pageant
Kirk: Life Rich Pageant, and I remember him just wanting to do just, again like a call-response thing that was very similar to REM was doing at that time
Kirk: and he was like “we are gonna start doing this cool, you know, one guy sings and another guy finishes the line” and– and remember him just like very adamant about that once he heard–
Lars: did that weaved into a particular song?
Kirk: I, I…
James: yes, but no one else could sing, so it didn’t work
Lars: *laughs*
Kirk: yeah, exactly
Lars: *laughs louder*
James: he was definitely into what was really unique about them back then is… there were 2-3 different verses, but they were all sang at the same time, and they would just gonna go over each other; there was no specific way of doing it.
James: Cliff loved caos that way, musically, things where weren’t supposed to be normally, so he loved that and I think that the issue was no one wanted to step up to the mic and do the other part
Lars: yeah and it’s intresting you say that because the stuff you and I came out with, especially me, was about order and about… you know “bridge-chorus-bridge-chorus” and making it very easily digestable
Lars: and all of those New Wave Of British Metal things were all 3 minutes, and it was just super… y’know, easy to sort of understand and wrap your head around and I guess ultimately we ended up with the right balance of those two different elements, y’know
Lars: between chaos and order
