[You hear it again.]
[Those horrific wails and screeches that you heard a few weeks ago, except...]
[They're closer. Much closer. The first time, they came from somewhere far below. Now, you are certain the source of those cried is on the same floor as you.]
[Sometimes, it sounds like something heavy is dragging itself past your door, only to disappear into the hallway, often followed by... Squeaking?]
[...Either way, you have an incredibly bad feeling about this.]
[ Sybil couldn't remember the last time they even had a thought let alone comprehend anything outside of their flickering memories ]
[ then she flinched. Hearing sounds from outside of her apartment after it's been quiet for so long ]
' .....Is ...sr....a.a....ss....are they back?
[ she was really asking that question to herself rather than to someone else as she sputtered words while she took a little longer to stand up even with the cane as she stumbled slightly towards the door opening it ]
' ...
[ she might honestly have a death wish If she keeps poking her head out after hearing something that loud.. but she grabbed the bat that leaned on the frame, and stepped fully into the hallway ]
[As soon as you step out into the hallway, you step into a trail of blood, far too wide to be a normal person's, leading down the dark corridor.]
[For a while, you still hear the noises, but see nothing. The hallway seems to stretch infinitely into the darkness, but it's been this way for a while now...]
[Suddenly, you see something flicker at the end of the hall. An assortment of familiar, glowing blue dots, but... There were far too many of them, and the shape at the end of the hallway was far too large for comfort.]
[It doesn't seem to notice you... At least not yet.]
[ ...She's getting really delusional isn't she?, she hasn't noticed she even walked forward all over again ignorant of her own possible doom ]
[ she fidgeted with her small assortment of items, a bat. Her phone and her cane. She pockets her phone walking in the exact direction of sound, pressing her shoulder against the left wall dragging herself further down the hall ]
' ....S...Squid please...don't let me be delusional.
[ she pushed herself off the wall fully staring silently with tired and dulled eyes into the hallway Infront of her ]
' Y...you've come back? Answer me.
[ practically throwing survival instincts out the window as she picked up the pace, using her flashlight from her phone as a way to spot whatever she's hearing ]
[The dark shape seems to shift, almost as if it understands it's being spoken to, turning its head and- oh my god, those eyes are FAR too large to still belong to a normal person.]
[It gurgles, then slowly turns, squinting at the light shining in the distance. It tries to move, but abruptly stops, emitting a loud hiss as something clearly prevents it from moving.]
[Its body twists as it tries to pull at something with its teeth. It strains, but then succeeds, the offending object clattering onto the ground. It was a... Sword? Where the hell did it get a sword!?]
[The creature turns and drags itself away into an adjacent hallway, its long limbs, seemingly covered in open scars and dozens of tiny bite marks, dragging behind the rest of the body, leaving behind another bloody trail.]
[ she was stumbling behind trying so hard to keep up let alone get in arms reach ]
' Hnnk...
[ her legs already felt like they was burning up as she kept hobbling waving her arms around ]
' WAIT WHY ARE YOU RUNNING??
[ she doesn't even check if it's only just her and this large beast she's chasing down in the hallway ]
[ all that mattered in her blurring headspace was the pinch of hope that she actually found squid even squid might be different from the sounds of it ]
' COME BACK...please...hnng..
[ she stumbled gripping her knees having to take a mild break to catch her breath. Her bat clattering to the floor ]
[The creature continues on its path, seemingly unfazed by the yelling, eventually crashing against the metal doors leading to the stairwell.]
[Ah, right. Doors. Its greatest weakness.]
[After unsuccessfully attempting to open the door, it proceeds to do the next best thing its limited brain can come up with - violently ramming the door with its head over and over and over... To no avail.]
[It screeches in frustration, slumping against the door, exhausted. The myriad of wounds it sustained at the hands (or, rather, claws and teeth) of the other residents of Floor 1 certainly weren't helping it.]
[Stupid rats, with their stupid claws and stupid weapons... Bet some of them are still stuck in its back. It hurts to move. So much.]
[... It's not long, however, before it starts attempting to break the doors down again, each blow emitting a loud, metallic thud and leaving a slight dent in the metal as the beast continues to throw its entire body against it.]
[It needs to escape. It's not safe here. It's not safe anywhere...]
' Am..Am never gonna catch up..
[ she groaned slowly her pace, looking back then forward before dragging the bat along, maybe yelling isn't gonna work ]
[ She sighed and used the wrist straps on her cane to prevent herself from dropping it and to fix her grip on it before mentally cycling through her options ]
[ she could leave it to its demise, or start swinging like her life depended on it, so she kept pushing through the strain in her legs raising her cane up ]
' I swear if it's rats I'm done for.....
[ she turned the camera light back on and aimed it forward ]
[Despite the incessant squeaking that followed the beast before, it seems to have stopped. The only source of noise now was the constant, almost rhythmic banging, as the creature continued to slam its entire body against the doors.]
[The closer Sybil got, the more grizzly the surroundings became. There were rats, sure, but... They definitely wouldn't bite anyone anymore, seeing as they were very much dead. And those that weren't laid twitching, almost as if paralyzed.]
[Soon enough, she got close enough for the light from her camera to reach the creature, its large body having to constantly hunch over to even fit in the hallway, its entire body covered in open wounds, with what looked like several pieces of cutlery and an actual pitchfork sticking out of its back.]
[ She didn't realize the rats were getting this big, but she slowly waddled around the rats, double tapping them with her cane ]
[ if you could count giving them brain damage from a metal cane going against their head as double taps .. ]
' Stupid rats...where do they keep comin—
[ she mentally recoiled seeing each of them then the..armored rat making her almost wail but she clutched her fists so tightly as to not turn around and run away screaming]
' I..I can do this ...this for squid..or what I hope is squid..
[ maybe she could walk around them?? Surely they got a blind spot... ]
[Soon enough, Sybil was close enough to be able to actually see the creature.... And it was not a pleasant sight in the slightest - doubly so that it was very obviously Squid; or whatever was left of them, anyway. It was a miracle that this thing was still alive, let alone still attempting to break free...]
[In spite of the light shining almost directly in its eyes, it seemed to completely ignore her as it continued to slam against the doors, until-]
[BLAM!]
[The doors finally broke off their hinges, the beast careening through the doorway. Unable to stop its descent or regain any balance, it tumbled down, disappearing into the stairwell with a deafening wail.]
[Only after fifteen seconds or so, a loud THUD rang out from below, the creature seemingly having stopped at the very bottom of the stairwell.]
[You hear it again.]
[Those horrific wails and screeches that you heard a few weeks ago, except...]

[Something deep in its memory stirs.]
[Perhaps it's time to go home.]
[...Oh. It's that thing again.]
[It swims up slowly, dragging something behind it with one of its many limbs. It's... A dead Pipe Man?]
[It swims closer, then attempts to gingerly place the monster corpse in the Furnace's "mouth", before backing away.]
[Well. It technically didn't return empty-handed...]
( @k1ll3r-w41l )
[ SNAP. it's hatch closed almost immediately. Almost a little too slow yet as fast as a Venus fly trap. ]
[ before you could take a double take flames burst out and scorched the fuel into liquid components, metal. Flesh. And possibly bone marrow. And ash ]
"...."
" I ANSWER TWO QUESTIONS. IF SEA OF LAND CHOOSE THY SPEAK ."
[ There's the kettle screeching sounding tone as smoke rumbled out its bent pipes ]
[The creature doesn't respond, remaining at a reasonable distance from the Furnace. The silence feels like it drags on forever...]
"Gghghghrgghghghgglllll...?"
[...Ah. Right. It can't talk. At least, not anymore...]
[It gurgles, its mouth still submerged. It's clearly trying to communicate, but its apparent inability to do so only seems to frustrate the creature.]
[It throws its two front limbs up, the way a person would throw up their arms in exasperation, and lets them splash back down into the water, visibly dejected.]
" Mm..Cane? Curly hair has a crush on some guy who's basically has noodles for arms? "
" Didn't see em. Not that I care. HAHA. "
[ it let out a mocking train whistling tune as it kept burning its fuel ]
[ guess it knew..Or HEARD thing or two. ]
" ORR.....are you asking for something else? "
[The creature seemed more... Confused, than anything, as if the Furnace just said something completely incomprehensible.]
[Welp, this was a bust. Whether it was a case of mixed signals or complete lack of comprehension, the Kraken would likely never know.]
[So, instead of making any other attempts to reply, it just sinks lower beneath the surface.]
" NOT MY FAULT I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE SAYING. "
[ it's honestly playing the guessing game and spewing other people's words like a metal parrot exchange steam ]
" USE YOUR HANDS. "
[ if it would, it would have made a annoyed sound ]
" ARE YOU SAYING GOODBYE? "
[The creature does that strange, swaying motion again - probably trying to shake its head "no". Its eyes drifted towards the water, the creature visibly trying to remember something-]
[Wait. Wait a second.]
[The creature practically jolts upright, seemingly just now processing what was being said to it before.]
[Curly hair, cane... Was it talking about-]
"Ggshhyhhhhrrgllll..... Bbrrrggggggglllll.....?"
[It swims closer, emitting a barrage of chirps, squawks and gurgles, stopping short of the Furnace itself once it remembers it very much could still fry the creature to a crisp.]
[Well, at the very least, it seemed that it at least knew the person the Furnace was talking about. That's a start, right?]
" YES. THAT. "
[ it doesn't know what it's saying still but whatever, it was getting something correct ]
[ ... honestly if anyone saw this conversation they're just be hearing angry kettle sounds and gurgles back and forth.. ]
" I BROKE HER SINK ONCE. LAZARUS GAVE ME A MONTH WORTH OF COAL. BLEW HOLE THROUGH CEILING. "
" I KNOW.... SOME THINGS!! "
[ it huffed out some smoke pipes raising and falling. Curling closer to itself like a cat...a metal one in its case. ]
[The monster seems agitated - not aggressive, just... Stressed? Almost as if it had been expecting a completely different answer as it paces back and forth, trying to communicate something but utterly failing.]
[In the middle of its frantic confusion, though, it completely freezes for a moment, its body still and eyes unfocused, almost as if it's... Zoning out, becoming unaware of where it is or what it's doing.]
[ . . . ]
[It eventually snaps back to reality, emitting a hiss (or maybe a sigh?), and sinking slightly lower into the murky water.]
[Great. It won't even get to keep the few shreds of sanity it has left in the long run, will it?]
[...Oh. It's that thing again.]
[It swims up slowly, dragging something behind it with one of its many limbs. It's... A dead Pipe Man?]

[ THUNK. ]
[The waters hot, too hot. for any genuinely comfort is someone starting a large bonfire ? ]
[ definitely not as there's some ticks scuttling away from the source ]
[ The crackling of fire was temporary as a sound that could be the equivalent to a kettle over heating and making the irritating shrieking whistle from across the sewer hall ]
[ .... Definitely not alone anymore. ]
- @the-fierybeast
[The creature gurgled, the deafening whistle interrupting its nap. It left its usual hiding spot, managing to catch a stray tick as it tried to scurry away. Definitely not the most nutritious of meals, but in the sewers that's about as good as it gets.]
[Sure, the smell of food from a nearby camp was enticing, but... Something deep in the creature's fractured mind kept it away.]
[It swam closer to the source of the heat though the admittedly shallow water, seemingly curious, but stopped a reasonable distance from the gargantuan furnace nestled in the middle of the sewer junction. Huh. Was it suddenly active now? But why?]
[It totally wasn't related to the creature snacking on the ticks conveniently scattered around the sewers, usually stuck to a pipe-like tendril. Toootally not.]
[ It may not have eyes but it let out this screaming sound of a whistle blowing as it fire raged past a normal level ]
[ was it THIS pissed at the sight of another giant beast in its...house? Is this technically able to be called a house? ]
[ Nearby pipes started shaking as steam was running through them ]
" ABANDON ALL HOPE. ALL YE WHO ENTER "
[ ....Oh god it speaks. Kinda. Sounds muffled due to all the fire. Visitor just be making anything sentient now of days huh? ]
[...Oh, okay then.]
[The Kraken began swimming backwards, away from the Furnace, emitting a low rumble as it moved. Clearly, this turf was claimed, and their presence wasn't welcome.]
[Best to cut its losses and leave. Maybe grab a tick on its way out.]
[*crunch*]
[Still gross, but down here, beggars can't be choosers.]
" WHY RUN. FACE ME NOW. "
[ either it was really poor at inviting someone forward or was looking for a actual worthy opportunity to fight someone down here ]
[ atleast something equally in size. It's pipes shook as one barely lifted out of the water as furnace actively converted what limited coal it had to reheating its entire system ]
" LAZ SAYS I DON'T BITE. "
[ It wheezed out bits of coal dust and bits ]
[ Thunk. one of it's pipes fell down as it lets out steam from the exhaust, likely one from the ones from the top of its body with how it fell. Now bobbin in the water ]
[For a while, the creature did not move, simply observing the Furnace with its large, unblinking eyes. Did it even understand what was being said? Could it understand?]
[...Then, it slowly approached, but not too close, least it be boiled alive. Perhaps it could understand speech after all.]
[It makes an orca-like squawk as it peeks its head slightly more out of the water, some of its teeth poking out from the water. Not like it could help it.]
[Teeth aside, it was clearly trying to respond, regardless of how ineffective it would turn out to be.]
" YOU ARE THE FISH SMELL YES. "
[ sounded more like a rude statement rather than a question as it's flames died down enough to not occupy the air with its coal dust and steam ]
[ smaller ticks scrambling back towards the pipes...only to be fried given the pipe lining hasn't fully cooled ]
[ It's hatch opened, just to loudly shut close in a loud booming noise causing it's body to rattle and caused the water to ripple ]
[ it visibly looked like it was on its last leg due to the lack of coal intake...mainly because it's summer. ]
[Fish smell? But... It wasn't a fish. It wasn't in any way related to a fish. It didn't even look like a fish! How dare the Furnace make such a blatantly incorrect comparison?]
[...Wait, why did this matter? Why did it remember there being a difference?]
[It tilts its head, both slightly confused and intrigued. Mostly because the giant Furnace was speaking, first and foremost.]
" YOU. HAVE BEEN THE ONLY THING THAT HAS SPOKEN. "
[ It's pipes burst with more steam, boiling the waters around it as the fire burns brighter. Almost blinding. ]
" HAVE YOU COME TO SUCK THE LIFE OUT OF MY CORE LIKE THY TICK? "
[ That was its only question. This person...beast. wasn't Lazarus. Or the other worker that willingly comes down here to brush rust off its body so its declared it as a threat. ]
" I WILL NOT SHUT DOWN SO EASILY...CREATURE OF SEA. "
[The beast, strangely enough, flinched and darted backwards, but not out of view. Probably because the water got too unbearably hot.]
[It waited for the Furnace to finish its speech. For a little while it just sat there, unmoving, before beginning to sway its head (body? Both?) side to side.]
[Was it... Was it trying to shake its head?]
[It let out two short squeaks. Almost sounded like a garbled "nuh-uh". Regardless of how unnatural and awkward its attempts to communicate were, it clearly wasn't trying to challenge the Furnace.]
[The beast sank further back below the water, only its eyes peeking out above the surface as it began to attempt to retreat again.]
