The Sacrifice of Isaac (1630) by Jacob Jordaens
Frederick Mackenzie, The Library of Stanmore Hall, the Seat of Robert Holland, Esq, watercolor.
The portrait shown is that of the Marquise Brigida Spinola-Doria, an oil on canvas painting by the Flemish artist Sir Peter Paul Rubens, dated 1606. The work is currently in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., as part of the Samuel H. Kress Collection.
The portrait was commissioned by the Marchese Giacomo Massimiliano Doria of Genoa to celebrate the wedding of his wife (and cousin) Brigida, who came from the Spinola family. The painting reflects Rubens' ability to capture the essence and dignity of his subjects.
The Baroque style of the painting is evident in the use of dramatic lighting, intense emotions and highly realistic details. The figure of the Marquise occupies the central space of the painting, reinforcing her importance and presence. Her upright posture, accompanied by a subtle twist of the torso, suggests confidence and dignity.
