Waking up Tonya. Here’s a rough re-drawn version of my developing webcomic, Tonya Ponytail, a comic the centers on the ditzy, gluttonous and uncannily strong Jamaican American preteen herself and her comical misadventures on the whimsical isle of Natwick Island.

When coming up with a story, it makes sense to design the characters first, at least that’s my way of doing it.

Here, are rough designs of characters for the first story arc: Tonya & the Bayou Giant.

Premise: Tonya and Loopy are looking forward to Gumbo Day, the day when the Gumbo Fairy make her legendary gumbo stew.

But, the Bayou Giant has stolen all the gumbo. Furious, Tonya and Loopy spring into action, to the Bayou Giant’s lair to retrieve the gumbo and then hilarity ensues.

I know it’s been a while, since you all heard from me, that’s because I’ve been working on my special personal project.

I’m creating a comic strip style webcomic of Tonya Ponytail and releasing it on Tapas. I not sure when I’ll be releasing it, because I’m still prepping a back catalog of strips, but I’ll try to keep you updated and give you preview peeks of the strips.

For Valentine’s Day, I created Tonya a new love interest, sort of. While, the Jungle Boy concept was cute, I thought this dynamic was more funny. I haven’t thought of a name for him yet.

He’s gruff and grumpy oni boy, who Tonya has a crush on. Inspired by the relationship between Krazy Kat and Ignatz Mouse, Tonya and Oni Boy’s dynamic an unrequited, antagonistic romance where Tonya obsessively crushes on the reluctant Oni Boy.

Much like Krazy Kat, Tonya naively interprets his insults and antagonistic behavior as love letters or signs of affection. But, deep down I like to think he may actually like Tonya, but is too prideful to admit it.
