I am proud that I was able to do more and do things differently compared to other classes. Being able to think differently when doing the assignments. It was not writing me 3 essays and having to be in a certain tone. These were all creative.

My Experience with a Cancelled Show

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I wasn't part of the fandom for too many TV shows, but one in particular that I was part of was Steven Universe. That show was cancelled, but was given the ability to wrap up its story with a sort of "sequel series."

This sequel series became controversial, mainly for its portrayal of Steven himself, whose arc over the course of the series revolved around him suffering from PTSD. He ended up making many poor decisions as a result which many saw as ruining his character, even though the portrayal of PTSD was accurate in that it did show alteration of his character.

I was mostly hands-off with the more fanatical parts of the fandom, but I have heard of incidents such as death threats pointed at the cast and crew, and the fact that Steven's voice actor had to go dark on social media due to stress and depression.

I was disappointed of course that Steven Universe had been cancelled, but at the same time, being given the opportunity to wrap up its story was a privilege many other shows have not been given. Many still hope that the show will be revived, perhaps as a spin-off. Rebecca Sugar, the showrunner, seems to be comfortable simply taking a break from content creation. Of course, the state of Cartoon Network in the present day may mean Steven Universe won't be coming back anytime soon.

You make a great point about how rare it is for a canceled show like Steven Universe to get a proper conclusion. The sequel's take on PTSD was bold, even if divisive. It’s unfortunate how the fandom’s negativity impacted the cast and crew. Hopefully, Rebecca Sugar creates more thoughtful projects in the future!

Share and example of your experience as a fan of a show that was cancelled.

The tv show Taboo was a well crafted interesting exploration of England in 1814. It starred Tom Hardy as James Delaney a seaman that had spent 12 years prior in Africa. He, presumed dead, was returning home after the death of his father, a tradesman that had nefarious dealings with the East India Trading Company. The show was well acted and shot. The story line was compelling and with Tom Hardy in the lead, was very character driven. He played a hardened man with a checkered past that was shrouded in mystery. They ended season 1 on a cliffhanger as James headed off to the Pacific NW in America to stake a property claim and wage a trade war with EITC. I was so disappointed that this show never produced a second season. Period pieces generally do not attract my attention but, I enjoyed the portrayals of that particular underworld. There have been whispers of a second follow-up season since 2017...pretty sure, not gonna happen. Boo.

Your post perfectly captures the frustration of a great show ending on a cliffhanger. Taboo sounds fascinating—Tom Hardy as a mysterious, gritty lead is a win, and the period setting with trade war intrigue adds so much depth. It’s a shame we might never see the second season!

Original Content Writing (Week 14 Post 1)

I don't watch a lot of TV so this one was a little hard for me. However, when I was younger I would watch a few shows. The main one that came to mind wasn't necessarily "cancelled." It was a show from the 70s that I really liked to watch (thanks to my dad introducing it to me) so my problem wasn't that they stopped making episodes (that happened long before I was born) but I do remember when they removed the show from Netflix.

The show was called Emergency! and it followed a team of firefighter paramedics and also the doctors and nurses in the emergency room at the local hospital. I really enjoyed this show as a kid because of all the cheesy action and, of course, the cool fire trucks. For a period of time this show made me want to be a firefighter. I remember spending a lot of nights watching this show with my dad. We would watch it on Netflix mostly (Netflix was the first streaming service that my family had). At some point, I remember seeing the message on the screen that Emergency! would soon be removed from Netflix. I was very upset and told my parents that they could cancel Netflix once they removed the show because "it'd no longer have any use," (we never did cancel Netflix).

I had the first season of Emergency! on DVD for a long time and, after Netflix removed the show, I would rewatch season 1 a lot. I've probably seen season 1 twenty or more times. Luckily, a holiday came up soon and my parents bought me the entire series on DVD. I'm pretty sure there were 7 full seasons. I still have these DVDs and I've actually met one of the actors who was on the show (Randolph Mantooth) and got a signed picture and had him sign my DVD case.

I'm sure that from Netflix's perspective, the show had little to no value. It's just an old show that probably very few people watched. The thing that the corporate leaders never consider is that the fans who remain of that show are likely pretty dedicated to watching it and it can be a little hurtful to see your favorite show get removed from your only streaming platform. To me, Netflix seemed like a big enough business that they should be able to keep old shows on their library but, as a kid, I didn't consider the amount of money that they likely have to pay for the licensing of the show. While I don't watch Emergency! a lot anymore, I still do watch it occasionally when I'm in the mood or whenever I find it on TV. I think there's a lot of really cool things to be discovered in watching old TV shows (I also liked CHiPs and Adam-12 for a period of time). I highly recommend checking some of these old shows out and giving them a chance. Some of them are really cool.

Share an example of your favorite television show or movie - how does that show/movie help you work through this project and understand angry fandom?

I cannot think of a more perfect example of a favorite movie of mine that also enrages a fandom more than the recent Transformers: One movie that come out in September, 2024. I myself am a fan of Transformers since I was little, and long story short this movie was a prequel to all Transformers stories about the beginnings of Optimus Prime and Megatron, the protagonist and antagonist of the franchise. The good news is, Transformers fans unanimously loved the movie, and it gained plenty of good reviews due to its deep, mature plot and talented voicework. The bad news is, due to poor marketing and bad timing, it barely gained any money from the box office. The reason why something like this is important for my project is to show how you can make near perfect content for your audience, but if you do not market your content for people outside your audience, it may not get all the success you were hoping for.

This one is interesting, as it does not exactly count as a show that was "canceled" but rather a show that resonated so deeply with me that its end feels unwanted. Adventure Time, a cartoon on Cartoon Network from 2010 to 2018, started off simple yet creative but grew into a complex, thought-provoking world with characters that feel real and genuine. Each episode on its own can balance between comical, feel-good antics and existential dread. While it did have a genuine, definitive ending (which is rare for cartoons) the fact that the show in its entirety was able to do what it did makes any form of an "end" feel unjustly, even if the show itself has 10 seasons worth of stories to look back upon.

write a style rule for creating a TikTok video, how does this help attract followers?

My rule would be to have the best content right away in a video. I’ve seen this a couple of times where creators will put an insightful or funny piece of the video right away, and then have that part come up later, and it works really well as a hook to your video. Getting people on that hook, and then having them go to your page is what’s vital and what will drive engagement and then also increase your followers.

What is my style rule for short Tumblr posts?

I have been using the same style strategy all semester for my Tumblr posts.

By far the one thing you want to make sure you do is not have a wall of text. Have short paragraphs, broken up by breaks, or even have images between your paragraphs that emphasize your points.

If you're using the desktop web version of Tumblr, it lets you insert an image anywhere you have a blank line, as seen in the above image. Including an image in your post increases its engagement, as I've personally seen in my time here!
