working on a redesign of pearl. i really adore her, and i like some aspects of her design, but other aspects felt a bit generic to me. oswaldo schneider had sanitized benzaitengoku into planarcadia, but pearl has demonstrated interest in the planet’s original culture. intellitrons are known to hold little attachment to their physical body. they reshape themselves to fit the roles given.

so, pearl, a robot trying to imitate humanity, may emulate whatever she thinks the ideal steward, “daikokozu”, of the planet should be, but without losing the fact that she is representing the IPC. i tried to bring in more edo period elements without having it take over the design completely (since she can’t openly go against the IPC). you can see my research in the images, but i’m mostly looking into kosode or adding junihutoe-esque layers. in game, pearl’s mannerisms are still japanese with how bows frequently and at very specific depths (pay attention during dialogue cutscenes and you’ll see!).

i also wanted to make her seem slightly more inhuman. pearl loves humanity more than most intellitrons, but she still recognizes she is something other. her body is clearly robotic, but her canon face looks completely human. no fun! let her look totally unique, just like lygus and screwllum do! so i’m experimenting with her having a mask painted like makeup typical of the edo period. i’m not sure what i want her hair to be… fabric? sculpture? artificial hair like in dolls? most intellitrons have sculptural hair…

her story deals with themes of artistry v.s. commercialization, what role economy and finance have in creativity, ‘creative industry’… hoyoverse enjoys a massive and passionate audience for their art and stories, but only because they modify their stories to be marketable to that audience. it’s a topic which has no right answer, in my opinion.

hey did you know that. anaxa is my favorite hoyoverse character ever actually. and i love him so much? I'm not even mad that he's dead because it was so in character. who or what could have even stopped that from happening. mr "survival priority approaches zero" was gonna sacrifice himself no matter what we did
