I like how this videos adds content to the luck vs skill idea. However, it seems to me that Derek kind of misses the point. It was most evident during the NASA example where there were tons of qualified (via skill) applicants who did not graduate because of luck. Now the take away that the video makes is that those who got lucky should try to increase other people’s luck. This seems like terrible advice because it continues to play into the zero sum game that is elitism. Back to the NASA example; if everyone had had more luck it would not have changed the outcome much nor our interpretation of the outcome. We don’t need to increase people’s luck we need to decrease the importance of luck for success by creating more opportunities. We also need to decrease our selectiveness because at a certain point all we are doing is selecting for luck which is quite useless.
Ok to be fair I’m sure Derek wasn’t really serious when saying we should increase luck he more meant it as like “we should make it so that unlucky people can have what lucky people have today”.
