not to ho full englisy major literary analysis whatever over a shounen anime on main but

wanting Endeavor dead rather than allowing the nuance of his canon ending actually allows him to get away with his abuse & is the most disrespectful way to end his narrative. & also in doing so you’re completely discrediting the very real victims’ stories represented through characters like Rei & Shoto who do allow their abuser the space to change & atone & become a better person each day moving forward.

in the same vein, thinking tomura’s ending being death was the wrong choice completely discredits his own narrative in that he wanted to be from all for one’s control, and on account of the fact his very birth was orchestrated by all for one’s control, death was the only way to escape. tomura was unwilling to atone for his hatred & his damage, he just wanted freedom & dying gave him that.

killing endeavor actually genuinely disregards Rei’s character & her trauma & is a cheap cop out to make you the reader feel like you did something for this fictional battered woman when the battered woman in question stays with Endeavor not out of fear or obligation but because she understands Endeavor’s grief consumed him & drove his vile actions in the same way her fear consumed her & caused her to harm Shoto. Rei & Enji staying together may not be the healthiest option for them, but it objectively makes narrative sense especially considering Rei puts a proverbial gun to Enji’s head and is like “You get one chance. Don’t fuck this up.” whilst in the hospital. Todoroki Rei doesn’t need her husband dead— she needs her husband to be the man he thought he was.

Enji was fully willing to set his family up for life & remove himself from their narrative & free them from him as his atonement— THAT was his original plan. Which is exactly what the fandom wanted from him. It was Shoto & Fuyumi & Rei who said “That’s not good enough. That isn’t atonement. Running from your sins doesn’t change them, changing how you treat us does.” & that change doesn’t undo Endeavor’s history in ANY regard but it DOES complete Horikoshi’s overarching theme of believing that all people have inherited good & allowing anyone the opportunity to be & do good if only they’re given the chance to do so.
