Joey ran a hand down his face and sighed. “I guess you have a point.” he mumbled, He allowed Setsuya to ruffle his hair and relaxed maybe the kid had a point. Kaiba was indeed focused on other things, like dueling Yuugi or whatever else that stupid CEO did on his time off.
“Overestimating Kaiba?” The blond snorted a bit. “Have you seen that extra jerkwad?” He paused. Okay the kid was definitely right. “Its a hard habit to break. Measuring my worth on the word of others, because they knew so much better..” But they did know so much better… Didn’t they? “He’s not the only one I do that to.” He found himself admitting.
He sat up and crossed his arms over his chest, long forgetting about the coffee and food he had before him, his stomach was now churning with upset and doubt. “Moneybags, Yugi and someone else I know well…. They know better than I do.” He didnt know what possessed him to blurt that out, but by the time he wanted to take them back the damage had already been done.
“Or is that not how this works….?” He asked, it was a question he’d long to receive an answer to, but part of him knew he’d be afraid of that answer.
Hmmm. It’s a good thing Setsuya got to talk to Joey and get a deeper look at how he thinks. He was no therapist or counsellor, but the man definitely wanted to help somehow.
“I think all of us do that sometimes.” Setsuya said, offering a small smile once taking a sip from his drink once more. He felt bad for bringing down the mood like this. He really hadn’t expected this.
“Even us artists do it all the time. It’s just a human thing to do, comparing ourselves. But just because someone is doing better or overachieving doesn’t mean we’re necessarily bad.”
Opening up his coat’s pocket, he fished out his sketchbook and clicked at his pen, quickly doodling a red eyes.
“We all live life at our own pace and I think you should be allowed to be proud of the little things you’ve achieved too, even if they aren’t as ‘amazing’ as other people’s.”
Grinning widely, he ripped the page out and slid it over to Joey.
