so i first heard of kiss of the spider woman last year when i was looking for queer movies to watch, and i came across the 1985 adaptation. i immediately became obsessed with it and decided i wanted to read the book. i only recently got the book and started reading it, and damn. i thought the discourse about molina's gender was a bit dramatic because, of course, cis people aren't going to read gender nonconformity and trans subtext as strongly as trans people are. but this shit ain't subtext. molina literally refers to herself as a woman almost every chapter and refuses to back down from it. this isn't just an effeminate gay man, this is a person who repeatedly and adamantly refers to themself as a woman, and openly proclaims their relationship to womanhood and femininity

the real problem about"the kiss of the spider woman" adaptations is not if they are queer enough or not, their real problem is: They arent argentinian enough, in a historical sense AND dialogue sense iywm, bc the unique thing about Puig's style in his books is that he wrote on purpose like if he was recording the casual conversation between random argentinian people that you would find in the streets or argentinian television, etc
