the first week of classes is over, and wow i already have lots of things to do! but iâm super relieved because i really like my professors and TAâs and the material iâm learning is super interesting! i have to admit, balancing studying with chores and other life things like eating, cleaning, and doing the laundry can be a struggle, and my head is reeling because it seems like i have 20 deadlines to remember each week. but iâm going to stay positive and try to make the most out of my freshman year!
07.13.17
messy titles, but I got a lot done today :) plus iâm almost done with the first semester of my precalc course, and summerâs not even halfway over !!

guys iâm dangerously addicted to tiktok send help đ°
instagram saw these first!
WEEK 1 // very first week of college is done! it was okay? kinda fun? but i was more excited to work on my spreads (â§âĄâŠ) finally, there is something to write about. i just couldnât see why i should journal on my summer vacation when all i ever did was take naps, watch films and shows, eat, and just chill. i think itâs just a waste of ink lmao. my summer isnât just exciting as yours, guys :-( but here i am again! trying out some new stuff, what do you think?
studygram // @studyathenus â i post some sneak peeks / behind the scenes!
my two most recent spreads đ€ I like to keep it simple but to add some extra bits of brown paper. âïžđČ

w1 q1: have you made a study schedule to help you study at home?
yep!! you can see it up above, iâm a pen and paper kind of girl when it comes to schedules. my due dates and schedule for study abroad is also in my uceap (uc education abroad) notebook
w1 q2: how are you being taught your lessons?
my university has chosen to use zoom! as our online classroom. but i know some teachers will opt for top hat out of personal preference (i hate it blease no)
(11.04.20)Â // i took a break yesterday to clean my room and iâm so, so happy đa tidy space always helps me to gather my thoughts when iâm feeling overwhelmed.

21 days before school
âI hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.â Â Â Â Â Â â ConfuciusÂ
the curve of forgetting
the curve of forgetting describes how we retain or get of information we absorb.
day 1: you go into a lecture knowing 0% and come out knowing 100% of what you know (regardless of whether you know it extremely well or not)
day 2: you did not do any reviewing of your notes from day 1 therefore you have lost 50%-80%
and as the days progress we forget less and less
think about midterms! notice how around midterms when youâre trying to study for something (that you havenât been reviewing for regularly) it feels like the material is VERY difficult and almost as if youâve never learned it before
formula to reshape the curve
within 24 hours of your lecture spend 10 minutes reviewing the material
a week later: it will only take 5 minutes to REACTIVATE the same material
ultimately, you will reshape the curve Â
day 30: by this day your brain will only need 2-4 minutes to recall
information on the curve of forgetting was taken from the university of waterloo (x)
my formula to reshape the curve using the information above
before class: spend 10 minutes PREVIEWING the material.Â
after class: spend 10 minutes REVIEWING the material
do this regularly. this will be your preview/review system for each class.
a week later: try to review a week later. i know that school/life can get pretty hectic, but try to make sure you are reviewing regularly.
maybe record yourself saying some important details/concepts from your notes the night before and on your daily commute to school plug in those earphones and listen to it. i am an auditory learner and i find that listening to my notes before i go to bed and right when i wake up have truly helped me retain information. studies have shown that the best time to study is right before going to bed and right when you wake up.
a month later: after a month, review what youâve learned so far in your class. trust me this will be a very very short review. everything will look very familiar to you and it wonât look as difficult as it used to.
basically your review schedule should be the following:Â
1 hour before learning the material
1 hour after learning the material (or within 24 hours of learning it b/c i know weâre all very busy people)
1 day later
1 week later
1 month later
remember everyone learns, studies, and retains information differently!! my personal belief is that your technique is what matters most. it is not about your innate ability/talent. find a technique that works for you.
more suggestions:
active learning > passive learning
when taking notes use the Cornell method. it forces you to ask questions and summarize what youâve learned.
set frequent, short, review sessions
test yourself constantly! there are so many resources online.Â
people who are under stress have difficulty remembering things so CHILL OUT
donât rush, take your time
repetition is key
practice MAKES PERFECT
group items together
fish, vitamin b12, and green tea can help w/ memory
donât give up. like morrissey said âthese things take time.â
okay, so here in california precautionary measures against COVID-19 have become increasingly intense. most schools have closed and are preparing to make the transition to âdistance learningâ aka online classes. this is a big change for many of us â but donât panic!
welcome to surviving online classes 101!
â
â self discipline
this is more of a warning than a tip. working from home means you will have to exercise a lot more self discipline. it can be a little bit boring or lonely at times. you cannot count on motivation from others (professors, classmates, friends, etc.), so you will have to learn some self discipline.Â
â create your own classroom
a good way to make the transition is to try and mimic the classroom setting as closely as possible. something that might be helpful is to set up a space designated for work. try to avoid the temptation to work in your bed or on the couch. that trains your brain to be alert in those places and makes it harder to relax/fall asleep. at least during online lectures, try and eliminate distractions that wouldnât be present in a regular classroom (like tv or netflix playing in the background, or having your phone out)
â dress for success!
dress in the way that makes you feel most productive. if youâre one of those people who usually rolls into class wearing sweats and still kills it, good for you! if youâre one of those people who needs to put on a full face of makeup to feel alive and ready for the day, do that! even at home!! i personally never wear makeup but if i try to be productive in pjs⊠disaster. iâve also found that cute workout gear makes me feel badass while still being comfy.
â create a schedule
now more than ever you need to figure out how to manage your time. you can use a planner, bujo, google calendar, the forest app, whatever. just make sure you keep track of things like
due dates and TIMES
exam dates
lecture times
hours spent studying
meals (pls eat 3 if possible)
water intake
sleep schedule
â pack your bag like you usually would
i know this probably sounds so dumb, but when youâre done working clean up after yourself. pack everything up like you would at school, to sort of signal to your brain that academic time is over for now. and then unpack and set up when youâre ready to get to work again. this is just another way to trick your brain into that school mindset while youâre stuck at home.
â donât overwork yourself
break up your studying into chunks. being cooped up all day can make us feel like weâre wasting time, but be sure to schedule breaks and reward yourself after a solid study session. iâm a big fan of the pomodoro method, and it can be customized really easily to allow for more or less study/rest time.Â
â maintain a healthy sleep schedule
now is the time to develop that healthy sleep schedule we all dream about. staring at a computer all day is exhausting and hard on the eyes and brain, so make sure to give them enough rest and time to recover each night. also, consider investing in glasses that block blue light, even if you donât usually use glasses. this will keep our eyes young lol.Â
â communicate with your teachers and classmates
most of us are making this transition to online learning together. any time you have questions, email your professor. reach out to your classmates at the beginning and exchange emails/phone numbers/social media so you can build a support system. if something goes wrong, screenshot it immediately and reach out to your professor. technology isnât perfect, and mistakes can happen, just communicate them.
â turn things in early
this is my biggest tip. when you are relying on online submissions for assignments and digital lectures, you always want to allow extra time to fix any errors you might encounter. your professor will also be much more willing to help you fix a problem two days before a deadline rather than two minutes before a deadline. eliminate that uncertainty by playing it safe with online submissions.Â
â
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!! YOU GOT THIS!! WE GOT THIS!!
The Very Basics of Not Killing Your Computer
AVOID HEAT STRESS
If you have a laptop DO NOT use it on a soft surface like a pillow or on a blanket, itâll block the vents on your computer and make it get really fucking hot inside.
If you have a desktop you gotta open it up and blow out the dust sometimes.
If you are moving your laptop in a bag turn the laptop off. Donât put it to sleep, donât just shut the screen, turn it off, because otherwise itâs in the bag generating heat and thereâs nowhere for the heat to go in the bag. OFF. Not sleep. OFF.
DO NOT DROP
Okay I know that should be obvious but drop damage to your hard drive is bad bad news. Be as careful as you can to set your computer gently on flat surfaces; donât leave it hanging out on a bed where it can get knocked off, donât set it on the roof of your car. And yes, just dropping it a couple inches can kill your hard drive or totally shatter your screen.
DONâT PUT SHIT ON YOUR KEYBOARD
Look Iâve seen four people ruin their laptops because they had a pen on the keyboard and closed the laptop and it fucked up the screen and the keyboard and it sucks so much and you feel awful after it happens because itâs so avoidable just donât put things on your keyboard and always check that your laptop is clear before you close it.
PROTECT YOUR PORTS ON YOUR LAPTOP
Youâve only got one power jack and a limited number of other inputs on your computer and if they detach from the motherboard youâre fucked. USB ports get damaged because people use them a lot and eventually it weakens the connection and then they just stop working and it sucks. You can get around this with USB ports by using a USB hub to connect things like your keyboard and mouse.
For your power plug you just gotta be careful. Avoid tripping over the cord at all costs, donât yank the plug out of the computer. It will SUCK VERY MUCH A LOT if you have to buy a new computer because the power port lost contact with the motherboard.
Donât move your computer with things plugged into it. Take the power cord off before you put your laptop in the bag, take out the USB mouse dongle, do not travel with little nubby bits sticking out of your computer that can easily get caught or get tweaked or snap off inside of the thing.
(I really canât emphasize enough that most of the âit will cost more than itâs worth to fix thisâ laptops I see are because of USB ports and power jacks. People donât seem to know that this isnât something that can be fixed easily; a broken power jack is a âremove the motherboard and resoldier componentsâ job, not a âplug a new one in in fifteen minutesâ job and most computer repair shops arenât going to solder things for you and if they DO itâs going to be very expensive)
RESTART YOUR SHIT AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH AND JUST LET THE FUCKING UPDATES RUN
You should probably restart more than once a month but whatever. This is actually something that I consider part of reducing heat stress because when your processor is straining to keep up with all the background bullshit thatâs running from a program you opened three weeks ago itâs going to use up resources and get hot and look just restart it once in a while.
Also the updates are almost always okay and safe and generally running updates is a good and secure thing to do (though maybe follow a blog dedicated to the OS you run because if there IS a problem with the updates that blog will probably talk about it before the update gets forced on your computer)
ANTIVIRUS BULLSHIT
Yes you should probably be running an antivirus.
Sophos is free and itâs fine. But donât pay for it - if youâre using Sophos use the free version.
If youâre looking for something paid and a little more comprehensive I recommend ESET - get the cheap version, renewals cost less than the initial purchase, and feel free to get a multi-year version, the credentials follow your email not the computer so if your computer dies before your license expires you can install the license on a new computer.
DO NOT INSTALL NORTON OR MCAFEE THEY ARE EXPENSIVE BULLSHIT. Kaspersky is whatever. Itâs less bullshit than Norton or McAfee but not as good as ESET for about the same cost.
If you think youâve got a virus run the free version of Malwarebytes and get your shit cleaned.
KEEP LIQUIDS THE FUCK AWAY FROM YOUR COMPUTER
Again this should be obvious and yet. But seriously, just make a rule for yourself that drinks arenât allowed on the same table as your computer and youâll save yourself a lot of headaches.
PLUG YOUR COMPUTER INTO A UPS
Okay I fucking hate amazon but hereâs a thing you should be using, just search the rest of the internet for âsurge protector/UPSâ and youâll find something that isnât from amazon - APC is a solid brand for this.
Basically you want a fat surge protector that has a little bit of a battery backup and you want to plug your computer (desktop OR laptop) into that instead of into the wall. The benefit of this is twofold:
1) if thereâs a power surge the UPS will prevent your computerâs power supply from getting fried and possibly frying parts of your motherboard
2) if thereâs a power outage and youâre *at* your computer youâll have enough time to save what youâre working on before your computer loses power (like, youâll maybe only have a minute or two on a small UPS but thatâs still time to hit CTRL+S and keep from losing work)
At a bare, bare minimum your computer should be plugged into a surge protector but NOT directly into the wall.
BACK YOUR SHIT UP
[we interrupt this yelling for me to tell you that Western Digital has apparently released their new My Passport line and Iâm obligated to inform you that you can get a 2.5âł USB 3.0 backup drive with FIVE FUCKING TERABYTES OF STORAGE for $130. Or you can get 4TB for $93. Or you can get 1TB for $53. basically what Iâm saying is that it is not only cheap computer season it is also cheap hard drive season.]
[also if youâre getting a backup drive get western digital not seagate seagate fucking sucks and has a much higher failure rate]
Uh, okay, anyway - Do an image backup of your computer every once in a while so that if you get infected or your hard drive dies or whatever you can just restore from backup and move on like nothing happened.
HEREâS HOW TO DO AN IMAGE BACKUP.
SAVE YOURSELF THE WEAR AND TEAR
You know what is cheap? USB Keyboards and USB mice. You know what is not cheap? Fixing the touchpad on a laptop or replacing a laptop keyboard.
Get yourself a USB hub, a USB Keyboard and a USB Mouse (wired or wireless, doesnât matter) and if youâre using your laptop at home plug *that* into your computer.
Also if your keyboard on your laptop breaks itâs fine just to use a USB keyboard instead I promise; if the screen breaks itâs also usually cheaper and easier to get a used or inexpensive monitor than it is to replace the screen. Your laptop is basically just a very small version of whatever bullshit is going on inside a desktop, if the peripherals break but the core components are fine you can just use it like a desktop.
Unless itâs a piece of shit that doesnât have any USB ports or video out in which case you got ripped off, friend, demand functionality in your devices Iâm sorry.

Good morning! I hope you had a great start to your day. âïžđ Iâm returning to the habit of reading at least 25 pages every morning, and itâs such a relaxing thing to do when youâre also listening to calm instrumental music.~đ”đ
ăQuick tip: In every reading session, set a small goal on how many pages you want to read in a certain time interval. This paces yourself to finish the book by your targeted schedule and can help you read faster. đ ă
my january page :)
04/12/19 â i went to this cute coffee shop with my friends and also uploaded a brand new youtube video, where i talk about how i take neat notes using my ipad! check it out here!
My professor talked about how women arenât used to asking for things in the work place, such as raises, because weâre conditioned to downplay our achievements and hold off on asserting our value. She discussed how, even now at this stage in her career (a published doctrate), she shakes when she askes to be considered for a raise and about the first time she was really successful at getting one. After class I asked her what she asked her boss and she winked at me, took me to her office, and asked me to take notes.
She said she practiced this technique like 5 times in her office before she requested a meeting with her boss. Iâm gonna share it with you guys because I really loved it.
You start off by thanking your employer for their support (whatever that means in the context of your work environment). You then say that you would like to take some time to discuss next yearâs salary. You say, allow me to refresh your memory regarding some of my accomplishments or contributions from the past year, and you present a written summary of all that youâve done. You close by saying, I hope that next yearâs salary reflects this list of contributions and you thank them for their time and see yourself out.
I just loved how she made it seem so much less daunting of a task. She said not to underestimate your achievements as women have a tendency underreporting what theyâve done.
The fact that she shared this with me really meant a lot as well as women really need to be there to empower each other and help guide each other towards success. So if you end up using this, let me know! I want to see how it works for you ^_^.
