happy halloween and happy birthday to me~ 🎃🎂🎉💕✨

i’m in my mid-twenties. over 20 and under 30. the quarter-life crisis. 😅 although i try my best to get through every day, and i often feel like i’m falling behind, i think i’m right where i’m supposed to be. i know my worth and i know what i like. i deserve good things and i want to share them with others. i know myself a little better now, and i’m still learning.

My mood has been a little off this week. I love the freedom of being a freelancer but sometimes I don’t love the responsibility of making my own schedule because I’m honestly not disciplined enough to keep up with a set structure. Hopefully I can find a happy medium soon. Being back in Philly and being close to family has helped with my sense of self and inspiration tho, so that’s a plus 🥲

struggling with biological classification and physics these days. winter brings along the desire to sit at the corner of my room and stare at the ceiling endlessly: no thoughts, head empty.

I think I might start a productivity challenge because the november blues seem unending, just like the number of forthcoming exams.

20:26 — last monday, the core team held a team building via zoom, and we were all required to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each team member. one of my bosses told me my only weakness was that i’m a workaholic. for this reason, she suggested that she’ll monitor my ‘proposed’ work sched (proposed, because our work sched is flexi), and will remind me that i have to wrap things up an hour before i submit my daily report email. i often lose track of time, and i submerge myself in all tasks, even attempting to finish a 7-day task in 1 day lol. so having her to remind me when enough is enough helps a lot. super grateful for bosses who see me as a human being and not a robot.

Hello! In today's episode I'm trying very hard (but not that much) to fix all the stuff I left behind on this last month. Probably the hardest part is to find a way to get everything organized.

There’s a realization that I had come to a while ago: there’s a fine line between being kind to yourself and letting go of the responsibilities that help you function every day. This might be really obvious of course, but I think a perspective of self-care that’s more widely advocated is one that’s narrowed to pampering and focusing all your attention to yourself, which isn’t inherently wrong, it’s simply only a percentage of the work.

When I had this thought, I was reminded of something Richard Siken said in an interview years ago. “My father died while I was writing this book, but the book isn’t about him. There’s a condescending tone I hear when people say “Writing is so therapeutic! How wonderful that you could take your pain and make something out of it!” But writing isn’t therapy. Painting isn’t therapy. Music isn’t therapy. Living well is therapy.” And I think I understand it now.

i guess it's fall! do you ever get feedback on a something that is exactly what you needed, but now you have to go back to square one and completely rearrange your draft? its daunting, to say the least. even my notes have notes. i'm lucky that my new mentor is so so so kind and encouraging--every time i talk with her i'm reminded how much kindness and generosity matter in academia.
