Fact: Grooms are given a fraction of the time to prepare for the wedding.
Fiction: They clearly don’t need all of it.
“Kai.” His name sounded as he gazed into the mirror, reflection mirroring something unreal. Dressed sharply in a tux that’d been tailored to frame, he found himself in awe. Not in least because of the caliber of his clothes, for he’d certainly owned fine ones, but because of everything the tux itself stood for. Fantasy, a fairy-tale ending, Kai was swept up by it all. In this moment, he hoped to be Prince Charming.
“Kai,” the voice sounded again, this time accompanied by a tap on at shoulders. He looked up to a familiar face, the barest hint of worry colouring their gaze. “You okay?” his brother questioned, fingers gently shaking his frame. “Feisty redhead wants us on the ready. It’s go time, little brother.” Kai nodded, still in a daze though offering a grin in consultation. “Here goes nothing,” he uttered as the music cued them in, the procession having already begun.
In the end, it was a lavish wedding and Kai appreciated the magic. If nothing else, the wedding was perfect; a thought that filled his stomach with butterflies. Who was she? Would she like them and what would he think of her? A plethora of questions plagued his mind, though they were soon forgotten as the bridal march sounded. As if in slow motion, the doors open, gifting him a glimpse at his bride-to-be. Beautiful. It was the thought that came to mind as he watched her walk the aisle, her steps elegant in way that defied the times. Kai couldn’t help but feel his present continuously nervousness grow. Here it was. It was happening. He was getting married.
“To all present I say: We are gathered here, not to witness the beginning of what will be and is to come. We do not create this marriage, because we cannot. We can and do, however, celebrate…”
The words of the officiant faded to the background over him lips giving way to the slightest smile. He’d rehearsed his lines and so with confidence he spoke, voice soft yet resounding throughout the hall. “I, Kai, commit myself to you, Kalani, to learn and grow with, to explore and adventure with, to respect in everything as an equal partner. In the foreknowledge of joy and pain, strength and weariness, direction and doubt, for all the risings and settings of the sun. I offer this ring as symbol of our connection and combined strength together.”
Kalani’s eyes scanned the chapel, landing on the man standing beside the priest at the alter. She felt a smile grace her features and her father squeezed her hand, causing her eyes to tear away from his and look at him. “You ready, Lani?” He asked, and this time, she was. All the nervousness in her body had melted away in an instant. “I’ve never been more ready in my life.”
The older man walked his eldest daughter down the aisle, kissing her cheek and placing her hand in the man’s, giving him the signature ‘hurt her and I’ll hurt you’ look before taking a seat in the first row. Kalani turned her head, glancing back at her sisters, who returned equally proud smiles, before turning her attention to the man before her. The man she was about to marry. The man she was about to potentially spend her life with.
Her nerves settled the minute the priest began, her eyes finding Kai’s again. She listened to the priest’s words, the smile evident on her lips. It was the kind of smile that would make her cheeks hurt if she kept it up for an extended period of time, but she couldn’t bring herself to stop. This was meant to be the best day of her life, and the wedding and the man before her seemed to surpass her expectations.
Finally, it was her turn to speak. She took the white gold band from Kamryn, placing it on his left ring finger. “ I, Kalani, commit myself to you, Kai, to learn and grow with, to explore and adventure with, to respect in everything as an equal partner. In the foreknowledge of joy and pain, strength and weariness, direction and doubt, for all the risings and settings of the sun. I offer this ring as symbol of our connection and combined strength together.”
The priest stepped forward once again, raising his hands up towards the ceiling. “Throughout this ceremony, Kai and Kalani have vowed, in our presence, to be loyal and loving towards each other. They have formalized the existence of the bond between them with words spoken and with the giving and receiving of rings. Therefore, it is my pleasure to now pronounce them husband and wife. Kai, you may now kiss your bride!”
