“I didn’t at first.” Evan admitted softly, “I spent a long time running, and not just from angels. I was running from people and pain, from caring. I didn’t want to be connected to anyone again, not if I risked that pain again.” They took both of Scott’s hands and squeezed, “even when I decided I couldn’t just keep traveling and living out of my car, I hadn’t really decided to make friends here. I always planned on being friendly, mind you but it was hard not to want company once I started chatting and realised I was going to be around these people if I stayed here.” Evan paused to take a breath before looking up at Scott with a small smile, “you were a big catalyst too. Especially once you’d seen what I could do. And just feeling who you are…” They kissed his cheek softly. “You and your friends reminded me of how important it is to have friendship and love in your life. It’s worth the risk of getting hurt. It’s never easy when you do but having support around you is so much better than trying to do it alone. I know it sounds cheesy but love is so much more powerful than we give it credit for, Scott.”

Grief still swirled around inside him. There was so much he still wanted to tell Lydia and so much she could still do, but he’d at least calmed down for now. Scott knew he liked Evan’s cheek kisses. They warmed his face, yes, but for some reason they also warmed his toes, which was nice, because he didn’t own any proper winter boots and his toes were usually very cold. He let their hands swing together for a while, smiling stupidly through his tears when Evan revealed that his pack had helped them see that love and friendship was important. “I wish Lydia could hear you say that. I think that’s something she really would have wanted to hear. And... even though it’s something I agree with, I also like hearing it from someone else because it makes it seem more.... real. I don’t care if it’s cheesy. I like cheesy.” Scott was the king of cheese when in a good mood, anyway. “We should go and find the others. I think the pack needs to be together for this.”

Zara didn’t know how she had missed out on the whole werewolf situation. Scott and his friends must have been good at containing whatever threats have came into their town before because most people were still completely clueless. They all believed in all kinds of crazy explanation for what was happening but supernatural cause definitely wasn’t one of them. “I’m sure you’re doing your best Scott…” He seem to be doing more than the police station. “What about you? They hunt werewolves right? Aren’t you in more danger than I am?” Zara wasn’t going to leave without him.

Scott rolled his shoulders and popped his neck from side to side, trying to stay loosened up in the cold weather. “I can take care of myself,” and then, because he thought that sounded extra mean of him, he softened his voice. “It’s okay. I’ve dealt with hunters before. I---” he stopped. He thought heard something in the distance. It could be anyone: someone answering his call, the police, Talia... but then a whizzing sound cut through the air and Scott hastily shoved Zara out of the way, catching an arrow before it hit them both. No doubt the hunters weren’t caring about who they hit tonight. He looked to Zara with panicked eyes. “Run. Toward the road. Did you drive here?”

“I have no idea.. I’m sure they’ll keep trying to find Jake until they can kill him, and they know he lived there.” Talia pointed out with a slight frown. It was a very real possibility that the hunters would come back and try to kill whoever was left at the house since they were clearly linked to Jake. All Talia knew was that she was keeping Ms. Martin safe no matter what she had to do. Even if that meant staying there when Lydia was gone. “The police won’t be able to do anything. I’m gonna be there as much as I can be.. Maybe we can all take shifts or something.” She suggested with a slight shrug as she continued to stare off at the house. It made her feel sick to think of anything happening to Ms. Martin, since the woman was like a mother to her.

“You know, school is out for a while. She won’t need to teach. Maybe she should just take a vacation,” Scott said with a shrug. He knew she would want to stay for the wake and the funeral but .... scott’s stomach churned at the thought of a wake and an autopsy and a funeral and... it was too final. He was hit with another wave of grief. “She’s lost two of her children. Maybe getting her out of Beacon Hills is best.”

Stiles thought about what Scott was saying, and he fully knew how putting their pack symbol all over the place could seem like an act of war. “I mean.. That’s basically what the alpha pack did with their symbol to warn us.. Right?” Not really warn them, but he was choosing to be nice with his wording. “I think it’ll get the message across that you shouldn’t be messed with.. I mean, you took down a literal pack of alphas and countless other things, hunters should be a piece of cake if they try to come after you.” Although, Stiles didn’t think they would. It was clear that the hunters wanted to get to Jake, and Lydia was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was never going to live down the guilt of dropping her off just moments before she was murdered in her own home.

“The alpha pack put their symbol in our territory. We’re putting our own symbol on our own territory.” What Stiles said rang true with Scott, though. He mulled the words overi n his head... ‘hunters should be a piece of cake if they try to come after you.’ “You know what? That’s perfect. We’ll lead them to me. I asked Jake a long time ago to move in with me and he said he wouldn’t but.. now I’m thinking he should. My mom can stay with Chris for a while.”

Scott’s words didn’t make sense to Zara but she didn’t ask anymore question because she’d just become more confused and she was almost sure that Scott wouldn’t want to answer so many. She kept looking at his red hues. The bright color had her entranced. She almost missed his revelation. “A werewolf? Seriously?” The fur on his cheeks made sense now. Her eyes gravitated down to his claws. She never knew any of this was real. When she thought of werewolves, she thought of cheesy horror movies where the girl tries not to get eaten but always does. She remembered the jogger that died out in the woods. It was the first death in the long list. Is that where it all started. “Wait, like safe from the yuki-onna? Your friend, the one that wears plaid, Stiles told me about her. Saved me from her, I guess.” She didn’t even know she needed to be saved that night. Zara was keeping her composure but she just wanted to freak out by all that she was learning in a short time. “She didn’t deserve to be killed. She was a nice girl.” She sighed, running a hand through her hair. “I know she was one of your close friend Scott, I’m sorry you’re going through this.”

“A werewolf.” he repeated. “Seriously.” He didn’t often get to reveal his world. Usually his friends found out in some other way and Scott only confirmed it. “I’d like to keep everyone safe from the Yuki-Onna, but I don’t think it’s working. Lydia was our best bet. She had the biggest connection...” Scott let out a huff. It was hard to smile through fangs. It always looked like a sickened grimace. Honestly, he felt both ways at the moment. Remembering Lydia was both painful and comforting. “You’re right. She didn’t deserve this. Not even the Lydia as I knew her years ago. The cold, calculating, Mean Girls Lydia... She was....” He didn’t have the words. Important. So important. She left a hole. “But you need to get out of here. I just told you why. There are werewolves and hunters... you need to get back home.”

“Well, I only had one half-brother, I just have one half-sister.” She nods her head and fiddles with her ring nervously. “No er, it’s okay..it happened a long time ago..and the pain is still there, it always will be, but he’s no longer in pain, and that is literally all that matters.” Ariel states through blurry tears in her eyes.

Scott knew Ariel’s half sister. He didn’t know how close they were, if at all, though. But she was obviously close with her brother. Ever the hugger, he reached out to her. Comforting her over her brother seemed to help the healing process with Lydia. “I hate knowing that it this hole won’t away. I just feel like there was so much more she could do...”

It could be dangerous, to sense the emotions of a shifter when the tensions were high but Evan trusted Scott. They returned the embrace and leaned their head against his. Soothing their hand along his back lightly, they were more than okay with just standing there and holding him. Evan didn’t really know what to say anymore either. Sorry didn’t cover anything and there really wasn’t anything that could make it better but they tried anyway. “She really loved you guys, Scott. Loss isn’t easy but… we have to carry on and find our way through this for her.”

“Yeah,” Scott sniffed, rubbing his nose in Evan’s neck. It was comforting to him, the action. They were so calm and helped calm Scott in the process. “I know.... I know...” He thought about how Evan lost everyone close to them and how they were mostly alone in the world. When he pulled back, he wiped his nose on the back of his hand. His wolf having retreated somewhere within him, whimpering. “How do you still manage to get close to people? Take in animals? After all this loss... sometimes I feel like I never want to let anyone get close to me again so I won’t get hurt. I want to protect the people I have around me even more... but not let in anyone new.” Of course, he’d broken that rule. He’d met Evan just a few short weeks ago and already he’d let them in. If Evan was ever caught and killed, Scott would be just as devastated.

Scott flexed his claws. He wasn’t sure if he could fight a demon, but he sure as hell wanted to try. “Where is Paxton? Is his soul still there? Is it gone? Or trapped?” He knew that if he and his friends killed Paxton, were they really killing him? He’d already died. Scott had no idea where to draw the line between the supernatural and human life at this point. He didn’t even want to kill werewolves. “And what do you even plan on doing here?” Didn’t evil villains always like talking about their plans?”

Talia noticed the slight annoyance in Scott’s tone, but she didn’t understand why. She pondered what he saw for a moment as she stared off at the Martin house before shaking her head. “There’s no way I could do that..” She mumbled quietly as images of Ms. Martin flashed through her mind. “I need to look after Lydia’s mom now that it’s just me there.” She didn’t even mention Paxton because she didn’t consider him any use in keeping her safe. She didn’t even consider him family. “In case they come back.”

Scott whipped his neck back to Talia, giving her a questioning look. “Do you think they’ll come back for Ms. Martin?” he asked. They knew the house. There would have to be security detail. “We should tell the police the home invaders might come back. Maybe get someone to sit outside for a few days.” Of course, it wasn’t like a police officer would be a match for hunters, but Scott liked to think it would give them an early warning system or at least deter them for a little bit.

Scott swallowed thickly when Liam gave him in the news. It was hard to have a reaction because his emotions were already all over the place. “Liam,” he said carefully, his tone unreadable. “We fought when you told me and I never thought, even for a second, that you hated me or that I would stop caring about you. I know Lydia felt the same way. It’s a....” he paused. “Frustrating situation with no easy answer. What did she tell you to do?”

Stiles slowly nodded as he grimaced at the idea of the hunters retaliating again. He was hardly functioning without Lydia, and he knew it’d only be worse if they offed anyone else for trying to mess with them. “As much as I hate to admit it, this isn’t our fight..” He managed to choke out as his eyes watered a bit. He wanted more than anything to go find those hunters and kill all of them, but that wouldn’t solve anything. It’d only make things worse. And for once, he had no other solutions in mind besides to just leave them alone.

“We’re up to our ears in fights,” Scott agreed without bothering to hide his frustration. “I had the idea to... mark this place as my territory. Liam helped me. Every tree in the vicinity has the McCall pack symbol on it. You don’t think they’d see it as an act of war, do you? They were after a different alpha, not me.” He frowned. He hoped he didn’t basically alert the hunters to another alpha in the area. Although, honestly, if the hunters didn’t already know about him considering how much he was worth in the deadpool and everyone else seemed to try and find him, then all he did was solidify his presence as a formidable alpha--not put a target on his back.

Jake was hit with so much guilt the second he saw Scott approaching the car. There was obviously a ton of different emotions that Jake could smell from the other werewolf and most of them had to do with grief. Jake knew that he was the cause of that. Scott had lost a member of his pack because of what he’d done. And judging by the way Lydia used to talk about Scott, Jake would take an educated guess and say they had been very close. It didn’t surprise him, of course. A lot of people were close with Lydia but the way she spoke about Scott was so different. He knew they’d been through a lot together. And now she was gone, and Scott was obviously hurting. After everything Scott had done for Jake, this was how Jake repaid him. “How much do you hate me?” He asked quietly, not even answering the other question. Jake didn’t want to beat around the bush. If Scott was angry and wanted to beat the crap out of Jake, he wouldn’t care.

Scott hurt. Seeing Jake hurt. Knowing what Talia told him only made it hurt even more. “You led them to her,” he said, knowing that saying the words out loud weren’t going to make them any less true, or hurt any less, but he needed to say them. “You put that whole house in danger just by being there.” He spent a lot of time with Liam putting up McCall pack symbols around the area to show the hunters that it was under the protection of him and his pack. He knew Jake was a good guy. Could sense it. He fought with Stiles over who had the better ability to sense the good in others and Scott, seeing as he was biased, thought he himself had the better ability. Jake was quickly becoming a good friend to Scott and he wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. “I just want to know why you left. Then I’ll decide if I’m mad or not.”

“Who jokes with guns?” Scott asked. He wasn’t, for one of the first times in his life, in the mood for a joke. He didn’t even know if Chris kept in touch with hunter circles anymore. “Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help find them. Look up hospital records... or be bait.”

Jake hadn’t made it more than 24 hours before he found himself being pulled back to Beacon Hills. As much as he completely hated that town and all of the horrible memories it held, there were two very big reasons that he knew he needed to come home. The most important one being his sister. He had left her at a time when he needed her the most and Jake knew how awful what he did was. Maybe he wasn’t ready to face Talia just yet but that didn’t mean he couldn’t stay close to make sure she was alright. The second reason he came back was Lydia. She was gone now, sure. And that was entirely his fault. He knew that she wouldn’t have ran away, though. The banshee was brave as hell. The more Jake thought about how he ran from his problems after having just two or three bad experiences in Beacon Hills, the more he realized what a coward he was. Lydia and her friends had been through hell and they never left. They stayed to protect each other. He knew how much Lydia cared about her friends and her pack, so he came back because even though maybe she couldn’t be around to protect them anymore, perhaps Jake could. He owed her that much. Jake didn’t want to get involved or form relationships with any of them, though. The closer he got to people the more he risked hurting them just like he had done to Lydia. It was part of the many reasons he left to begin with. So for now, he was going to do his best to stay away but keep an eye on them all at the same time- without being creepy or stalker-like (even though he was pretty sure he was dangerously close to that line).

Jake slept in his car the first night back in town. He drove around for awhile and debated going to see his sister and Ms. Martin on the second night but was hit with too many emotions when he drove by the house. There was no way he could go inside. He wasn’t welcome there anymore and he didn’t blame Lydia’s mom for that. Jake deserved everything he got, so he drove away quickly and had planned on sleeping in his car once again but it ended up breaking down a few miles away. The werewolf groaned and pulled over to the side of the road. The car was completely dead but Jake wasn’t sure where else to go, so he crawled into the backseat anyway and laid down. It was freezing without the heat on though so it was nearly impossible for Jake to fall asleep. He just stared at the ceiling for an hour until he heard the sound of footsteps coming up towards the car window.

Scott didn’t have the best deductive reasoning skills in the universe, but he was a quick learner, and after a while he picked up some from Stiles after their dozens of mystery solving missions. He knew the kinds of cars that parked outside of Lydia’s home and even though he didn’t know which car belonged to which person, he knew the cars when he saw them. He thought maybe Talia had taken on and it broke down, or maybe it was Lillian or Paxton’s... but as he approached the broken down vehicle with his bike, he recognized a scent from inside.... someone he didn’t think he’d see in Beacon Hills like this: Jake.

Scott stopped his bike. He found that it was easier for him to collect his thoughts while he drove. When he ran like a wolf, he it was to get away from his thoughts and seek release. When he rode his motorbike, it was to gather his thoughts and try to organize them. Jake’s appearance seemed to jumble all of those those at once. He came to a stop and knocked on the window with one gloved hand, then waved at Jake a moment. “Car troubles?” he asked, his voice sounding oddly casual. Talia was so angry with Jake, but Scott was still under the working assumption that Jake had been out trying to deflect the hunters and lead them away from Beacon Hills. Now that he was back, Scott wanted to keep an eye on him. No doubt he was an even bigger target, now.

“You’re shitting me.” Cora stared at the other with disbelief. She just got to Beacon hills and she was greeted with this kind of news. “That’s Lydia Martin— she’s like immortal. She’s dodged death loads of times. No—” The female wolf took a step back, suddenly angry. When no one believed in her, Lydia was there to pick her up and be a friend; Lydia was one her few few friends— someone who actually tolerated her. The raven head never cried but she was on the verge of tears. “I won’t believe you, you’re lying!”

“You know I’m not,” Scott said. He’d had time to process her death, but he had no idea what stage of grief he was in. He was somewhere between Bargaining and Anger, whatever those steps were. He couldn’t seem to get out of the need for revenge and the need to be civil about her death. It was hard, and it made him want to lash out at something one minute and curl into a ball and cry the next. He wasn’t an easy person to be around. “Cora, listen!” he cried. “Why would I lie to you? I wish you had better news to come back to, but...” he trailed off with a shrug.
