“When the temperature was more agreeable we walked the other way down the beach towards the mangroves of Gangamati. Fishermen wearing only longhis stared intensely before returning to paint and tar their boats. When we sat down in a secluded spot on the sand we were quickly surrounded by the ever-inquisitive locals who came from nowhere, demanding photos. Their curiosity sated they left us to enjoy the most spectacular sunset I have ever witnessed. It was a perfect light show performed by nature that at first transformed the cobalt blue sky completely golden, its fiery shades mirrored by the sea. It then changed into a molten mix of orange and pink, streaked by blue, into which fluffy clouds dissolved, changing shades every few seconds. The setting sun caused crystal clear reflections to appear on the wet rippled sand as fishermen and the next generation worked in pairs grappling with massive nets to bring them ashore. It was mesmerising, illuminating and enveloped us in a pool of colours, as though we were a part of it instead of mere bystanders.”

The Sylhet Division of Bangladesh is considered one of the most beautiful corners of Asia for it’s areas of outstanding natural beauty. It straddles the tropic of cancers and is located between the Khasi/Garo and Tripura hills, forming the Surma Valley. It is recipient of huge amounts of rain being located below the wettest place on earth, Maysynram and Cherrapunji in Meghalaya. Because of all these conditions, Sylhet is home to an array of Flora and Fauna such as the Pallas Fish Eagle and the Western Hillock Gibbon, both of which are listed as threatened species under IUCN. 

Many ask, many don’t know, why I love nature, and this is why. I was born in paradise.
