Hey guys! It’s been a long time but I’m working on some posts for later. I’m probably am going to work on a reversed version of the cards for next time. Thanks for reading!- Samantha
Tarot reading has been increasingly popular over the past few years. As folks begin to expand their horizons in the realms of spiritual practice, introspection, and self-care, Tarot is an exciting tool to assist in that process. However, it’s not for everybody. If you find yourself losing interest in your cards there are a few things you can do to try and reconnect, as well as alternatives that may suit your needs better.
Taking a Break
Sometimes, you just need to take a break and give some space for you and your deck to breathe separately. Place them somewhere respectful and continue to live your life. When you feel the need to pull them back out, try not to over-analyze that feeling. Tarot reading is most effective when it’s not forced. If your energy is off, your reading has the potential to be off. If and when it’s time to pick them back up, you’ll know.
Cleansing your Deck
If you’ve been dealing with some particularly heavy or distressing subject matter in your readings, it can definitely put a strain on your relationship with your cards. Giving your deck a deep cleansing can reset the energy of the cards and shake off some of that “negative” energy that may be influencing the results of your pulls. There are a few different methods for cleansing your deck such as:
Reordering your deck: Major Arcana, Wands, Pentacles, Swords, Cups 1-10.
Placing your deck in a bowl of salt
Running each card through incense smoke (reordering optional here)
Placing energy cleansing/clearing crystals (i.e. clear quartz) on the deck
Leaving the deck out in the sun/moonlight
Placing your deck on your altar with your other spiritual/magickal items
Taking one or a combination of these measures can clear any energy that may not belong to you or that you don’t want to keep around so that you can continue to grow and develop your Tarot practice.
Alternative Divination
As I mentioned earlier, Tarot isn’t for everybody. That’s not to say that everyone can’t learn how to read the cards, it just may not be an effective divination tool. There are plenty of other options to help connect to your Higher Self, Spirit Guides, Deities, The Universe, and any other energetic entities that you wish to communicate with. They include:
Pendulums
Runes
Playing Cards
Palmistry
Astrology
Numerology
Scrying (crystal ball, black mirror, water, etc.)
Bone/Charm Throwing
Tea Leaf Reading
and so many more!
These are all tools that can be used in tandem with Tarot reading or on their own. Before tossing your cards or giving them away, it may be worth your while to try to incorporate other methods of divination into your Tarot reading practice. Adding other methods of divination can provide clarity or a different “voice” to help you get the messages you need to receive.
Branching Out
You may find that divination itself isn’t for you (anymore). As my therapist would say, “great awareness!”; you’re figuring out what works best for you in order to make the most of your spiritual practice. If you are finding that you aren’t into Divinatory readings, there are other ways to incorporate the cards in your practice, such as meditation or using them for spell work if that’s your jam. Your deck is yours to do whatever you want with, and that may have nothing to do with using them in readings. Get creative with your use of the cards and you’ll find that as long as you’re doing something that is personal and meaningful to you, the cards will find a way to help if you want them to.
Walking Away
There are times when you try to make things work with a hobby or practice, and it just isn’t able to happen. You may not have the time or energy to devote to it, or it may just not interest you anymore. When it’s time to walk away from your cards, it may be beneficial to reflect on how you’ve changed from when you first became interested until now. This reflection can help guide your next steps and give you a sense of where you’d like to be headed in regards to your practice. I don’t recommend simply throwing your cards away (recycling maybe), but rather gifting, selling, or trading them for something else you are interested in. There are entire communities online dedicated to swapping, selling, and giving away used decks. Make sure you cleanse and reorder your cards before giving them to someone. As you’re giving them a final cleanse, be sure to thank them for your time together and the lessons they’ve provided you along the way.
Continuing the Spirit
Whether you are taking a break from your cards, finding alternative methods for divination, or are simply ready to give them away to someone whose more interested, there are aspects of your Tarot practice that you can continue to take with you as you journey through life. Journaling, self-reflection, relying on your intuition and getting to know yourself on a deeper level are all a part of self-care that are inherently also a part of Tarot reading. Whether or not you read Tarot for a season or a lifetime, there are valuable lessons and applications learned that have the potential to help your self-care practice flourish and allow your spirit to thrive.
