C'mere, gather round my campfire...

You can call me Arthur, but folks round these parts got many names for me. Not all of 'em are pretty.

I see you stuck around. Guess there ain't much else goin' on for you then? Well, I got adventures all over this fine country and I'm happy to tell you all about 'em as long as the campfire keeps glowing.

I've been around a while. What year we in? 2025? Well, guess that makes me 162 as of the 17th of July. But I gotta keep some of my secrets to myself. Don't be afraid to stop by again, plenty more to see here.

Arthur climbed back onto Cahallan's back and kept Mikey between his arms as he took hold of the reins once again. He looked at Harrow and nodded his head at him. "You must take care of a whole lot of animals?" He questioned, whistling for the dogs to fall beside Rodeo and Archer.

Archer glanced at Harrow with a curious gaze. "You rehabilitate horses? Does that mean you catch wild ones and tame 'em?" Archer asked curiously. He had always been interested in that sort of work even if he was only a boy. He'd seen Arthur do it a couple of times, but never had the chance to try it himself.

"Do you have other kinds of animals?" Mikey asked curiously, finally feeling brave enough to speak with Arthur close by again.

Arthur let the small hint of a smile tug at the corners of his lips when he heard Mikey ask a question. His expression quickly returned to the stone like expression he often carried.

"Oh yeah, you wouldn't believe," Harrow replied with a dry little laugh. If only Arthur knew just how many animals that were there and the kind of creatures they were, perhaps he wouldn't want to stay there. Then again, maybe he would knowing that there were unicorns and now even baby dragons found refuge here.

Upon hearing the question, Nafud gave his head a shake. "No no, the only way we'd take in a wild horse is if it's in danger and even then we only hold onto it until the vet can take care of it."

Harrow nodded at Archer. "Although some of the animals we get in might as well just have been yanked into captivity."

Nafud chuckled and pulled his hat down. They were both thinking of the same miniature horse that resided at their ranch named Tornado. Harrow said, "Yeah perhaps it's best not to get too close to the mini horses we've got."

Harrow replied, "Oh yeah! We've got some rabbits right now that are going to be rehomed. Some chickens and a trio of goats. Two sheep. You'll probably hear them as we get close to the ranch since we had to keep them in the shed all afternoon…"

Arthur thought about it for a minute. He hadn't ever come across miniature horses before, so that would be an experience. Goats and chickens and sheep he could handle, he'd wrestled rams by their horns once before and that had almost ended in him being rammed by those same horns.

Mikey was the most intrigued. He liked animals. "Miniature horses? How do you ride a teeny tiny horse?" Mikey asked with a giggle.

Archer snorted a little. "I don't think you ride 'em Mikey. I think they're just for show." Archer answered him before looking back at Nafud and Harrow. "Is your ranch big? The last ranch we stayed at was kinda small. They barely had two chickens to chase." Archer joked, patting Rodeo's neck gently as they rode behind the couple towards the ranch.

Arthur looked at Harrow when he mentioned needing to clean up the place they had been given. "A little cleanin' never scared me. Just grateful for the space we've been given." Arthur told Harrow with a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips. He turned to face the two boys who had finally caught up to them.

Archer held Rodeo's reins a little tighter. Adults were a touchy subject for the older of the two boys, he had been walked all over by adults who were supposed to help him and guide him. Arthur had been the first one to show any form of kindness in his own gruff way.

Arthur cleared his throat. "Archer, Mikey, this is Mr Harrow. He's gonna let us stay on his land for a little while." He announced. Archer simply nodded his head whilst Mikey offered Harrow a wave. "Nice to meet you, Mister Harrow."

The question wasn't answered, but Harrow supposed that the answer would come out sooner or later. At present, it wasn't too important and concern about the kind of person he was taking in was put at ease given the two kids. He offered both Archer and Mikey a kind, warm smile.

"You'll have to tell us what kind of snacks you guys like so we can pick you up something at the store tonight. Nafud and I were going to do it sooner but well," Harrow nodded at the cows still plodding along towards their home. "Life had other ideas. This won't take too long though. Nice little adventure."

He looked ahead to where he saw Nafud and Checkers and was grateful to see him discussing the cow situation with one of the ranch hands rather than the ranch owner himself. Nafud soon rode over to Harrow and to Arthur, though he kept his distance from the dogs and gave Checkers plenty of reassuring pets along the neck.

"Nafud is my husband. He does most of the work with rehabilitation at the ranch with the horses, though we have other animals that need rehoming."

The Wild West

Arthur Kane had been alive for a rather long time. He had watched things around him change and shift and now he was watching a shift once again.

The year was 1899 and the world of outlaw gangs and reckless cowboys was slowly coming to close. It was the world Arthur had once been involved in, but he managed to slip away from it and become a wanderer. He went were he pleased with his horse and pack of strays at his heels.

His current travels had taken him to a small livestock town. He had set up camp a little ways outside of town and had decided to venture into town to see what sort of money he could conjure for himself. At his side were his most loyal dogs, two large wolf crossbreeds. One with a coat as white as snow whilst the other had a coat as dark as night. Most people stared, occasionally a child would wander up to pet the dogs before running off.

Arthur had been passing the saloon when he spotted a little commotion between two buildings. Two men as wide as walls had cornered what Arthur assumed was an older teen boy. Arthur slowly and casually wandered down towards them. "There a problem here, fellas?"

"I ain't a stray," Steve mutters more to himself than anything because who was he kidding? Everyone in this town saw him as a stray, he was pretty sure. He looks down at the dog he pet, his white fur fluffy and soft beneath his hand.

"You guys are set up at the edge of town, in that camp? I..if you're sure, I wouldn't mind having a place to stay for a little while I..to keep those assholes off my back. It's been worse since Bucky left, usually people left me alone when he was around.."

Arthur nodded and let out a sharp whistle, his pinkie wedged into the corner of his lips to create the sound. "Sounds like this Bucky of yours was the intimidating type?" Arthur suggested, the sound of hooves against dirt making it's way towards them.

A large, dark brown horse with a glossy black mane had responded to the whistle, slowing until coming to a stop at Arthur's side. "Good boy." Arthur pat the horse's neck before glancing at Steve. "You got a horse or does Callahan here need to give you ride too?" The gruff older man asked Steve. He put his boot in the stirrup before pulling himself up into the saddle. "He won't bite. He's a bit of a softie."

"I don't got a horse I..I just walk everywhere," Steve admits, looking at the large horse in awe. He of course knew how to ride, Bucky had insisted on teaching him, but he'd never had his own. He also couldn't believe how well trained he'd been, he hadn't seen the horse anywhere nearby so it was impressive to see him coming up so quickly when he was called.

"Bucky's never scared me but he knew how to handle himself, always ended fights that I would start if I couldn't finish 'em myself," he explains, not trying to get on the horse and content to stay at his side and walk if he would be allowed to.

Arthur whistled for the dogs to follow. "Sounds like he was a good man." He told Steve before outstretching a hand towards Steve. "C'mon then. Callahan don't mind carrying two of us." Arthur reassured the young man.

He didn't exactly give Steve much of a choice. Arthur took hold of his hand and pulled him on behind him. "Best hold on." Arthur told Steve before gently clicking his heel against Callahan's side. "So, if you don't mind me askin', what happened to your folks? And why'd you hang around here?"

Steve has to swallow his instinctive quippy reaction, he hated when his size made it easy for other to pull or push him around even if it was to offer the kindness of a ride.

He steadies himself and tries not to hold onto the man in front too much as they start to move. The horse was strong and it reminded Steve of when he and Bucky would ride around together when they were younger.

"No..no I don't mind you askin, my folks died. My dad when I was younger and then my ma when I was a teenager. I stayed here with Bucky, he and I looked after each other because his parents died when we were kids too. But I got some health issues, things that made it impossible for me to travel with him when he left, so I just stuck here in town at least for now. I ain't got no where else to go.."

Arthur made his way out of the small town and back down a trail leading into the woods. The dogs remained on either side of Callahan, keeping pace with the horse whilst Arthur listened to Steve's story. "Well, goin' and gettin' yourself into fights ain't gonna help no one much less yourself." Arthur told him. "And like I said, you're welcome to stay with us as long as you need a roof."

They came across a little cabin with two boys on the porch. They were sitting on the floor of the porch, playing a game with random bits and pieces they had found before the sound of the horse coming towards them peeked their interest. "Arthur!" The younger of the boys, Mikey, enthused upon seeing him.

The other boy, Archer, leaned against the porch colum. He was always wary of strangers and Steve was no exception.

Arthur nodded whilst walking and listening to the explanation. He'd never been a fan of cows, not since nearly getting trampled by a group of them as a boy. That had been his father's way of teaching a lesson, scaring him half to death with the possibility of death. It was something he'd never do to Mikey or Archer.

His head glanced up when asked how long they'd be staying. "I have a little experience. Imma good shot mostly, and the boys know how to pull their weight." Arthur answered, hearing the sound of horseshoes clip-clopping behind him as the boys slowly approached them. "Speaking of." Arthur mumbled to himself, glancing over his shoulder at the boys and the horses.

Archer held the reins of Rodeo tightly, always wary of strangers and the man on the horse was no exception. The young boy glanced at Harrow before looking down at Arthur, hoping he'd have a reason for talking to the stranger. Arthur cleared his throat. "These are my boys, Archer and Mikey. Archer gets a little skittish around strangers, so don't worry if he don't talk much." He explained to Harrow.

"A good shot?" Harrow questioned, knowing what that would mean to someone like himself given his past as a mercenary, but he didn't want to just blurt it out and instead offered a sizable, "Mmm.," that sounded like he understood perfectly. Though he didn't. "Well as far as here goes, we don't have to worry about wolves or cougars too much. They tend to stay up north."

There was always danger present in many forms, but most of what they had to protect against likely kept the native creatures away from Sunnyside and the surrounding ranches. Harrow gave a nod at both of them. "No need to pressure anyone into talking when they don't want to."

It was easy getting the cows moving back towards the ranch once they actually got going. The closer they were to the Sunnyside Ranch house the better the grass was, and more of it. Further down the road it was just back to that plain ol' grass that the cows could get perfectly well at home. And with a lot less pushing from the horses. Up ahead, Nafud and Checkers kept their own small group going and soon got them turned onto the other ranch.

Back with the others, Harrow said to Arthur, "The one bunker we have hasn't been dusted in a while, so there might be a little cleaning involved. It'll be a good, safe place for the three of you to stay until you're ready to move on."

Remy didn't open them at first. "Ain't wha' mos' people t'ink. Le diable blanc." He spat the name out, hate and disgust lacing his voice. "Dem de reason why Remy.. why I's go' left."

But he did eventually open them, keeping his gaze firmly at the ceiling and not Rex's face. He didn't want to see his expression. "Dey're from de Devil."

While Rex was distracted by the bag, Remy stuck another sticker on him, this time to his hand, with a giggle.

He jumped excitedly, and reached for a set. "Dese 'uns! I like de fishes, dey're silly."

Rex laughed a little as the sticker was stuck to his hand. He left it where it was before glancing at the set Remy had chosen. "Those ones look like an excellent choice, little one."

He lifted Remy over his shoulder and tickled his sides, just messing around as he carried him to his side of the room. Remy's new plush toys neatly sat by his pillow.

"You even have some new friends with you tonight, huh?"

Remy shrieked with laughter, squirming as Rex hauled him around. Jean-Luc had never done that before. He bounced on the bed as he was set down. "Again?"

"Ouis, dey gonna stay up here wit' me." Patting both the cat and the gator, he looked up at the knight. "..Iffen dat's okay?"

"Of course they can stay there. They are yours, so they can stay wherever you want them to stay." Rex told Remy before lifting him over his shoulder again with a half a laugh.

Rex tickled Remy's sides again. "It would appear you are very ticklish, my little friend." Rex chuckled before carefully hanging the boy upside down, playfully of course.

He kicked, laughing. "Ain't ticklish!" Remy shouted, although his shrieks of joy said otherwise.

Remy let his arms dangle once Rex flipped him upside down and heaved a dramatic sigh that quickly dissolved into giggles. He pretended to swat at the knight's hands, although he didn't want him to stop. This was fun and new and he liked it.

"Oh, I don't know about that." Rex teased and turned Remy the right way up again. He gently tossed the boy into the pile of pillows on his bed, watching him. His laughter was like music to Rex, a music he didn't think he'd ever have the privilege of listening to.

Rex smiled at Remy and playfully grabbed at his ankles, tickling the soles of his feet. He was just happy to play with a boy who clearly didn't get play often, especially with their caregiver.

Remy couldn't stop laughing. He rolled over, taking the blankets with him and essentially forming a cocoon. "Non! Ain't ticklish!" The boy insisted, despite the evidence that the contrary was true.

Honestly, Remy was having a blast. Denying he was ticklish turned into part of the game and he took that very seriously. Or, well, as seriously as any seven-ish year old boy who was being hauled around and tickled could.

Rex laughed when the boy wrapped himself in blankets. "Now, this feels like cheating, don't you think?" He teased before poking at the blankets. "You've created a shield I can possibly break through." He added in that playful seriousness he did so well.

This was also part of the game. Rex was having as much fun as Remy was since he was seeing flashes of a life could have had hundreds of years ago, but had never been brave enough to pursue for fear of hurting himself.

Under the blanket burrito, Remy squirmed and giggled. He poked his face through a gap in the covers to stick his tongue out at Rex gleefully.

He pulled his feet into the blankets. "Lookit, I'm a worm," Remy announced with a grin. He wiggled as if to prove his point.

Rex laughed and scooped up the boy swaddled in blankets. "A very wiggly worm at that." He smiled and held Remy close for a second. "Now, I say we wind down a little. Can't go using all your energy in one go can you?" He smiled before setting Remy down again.

Rex's phone began to ring and he raised an eyebrow. "I'll be back in a second." He told Remy before stepping outside the hotel room to answer this mysterious phone call. Little did he know Jean-Luc had managed to get Rex's number.

Remy heaved a dramatic sigh, not quite ready to stop. But he obeyed, calming down. He watched as Rex left, then wiggled out of the blanket cocoon to straighten the covers, and find his stuffed animals.

There was silence on the other end for a moment. "Wha' you t'ink yer doin'? Keepin' de boy from his family like dat, couillon?" Same accent as Remy, but deeper, older.

Rex straightened up a little, not intimidated by the voice on the other end. "Families don't tend to try and drag people back home when they don't wanna go." Rex stated, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Besides, if you were truly desperate for the boy, you'd come yourself. Stop sending your lackies to do the heavy lifting." He added, his voice sharp but calm.

Rex glanced to the hotel door, hearing Remy's giggles behind it as the boy had found his stuffed animals. "If you'd been paying attention, you'd notice the boy is being targeted." Rex explained, referring to the cloaked individuals who had tried to snatch Remy. "He's safer with me."

"Remy's no' very old, he shouldn't be runnin' off fer days alone." Jean-Luc replied. "I'd get him meself, bu' I ain't in town. Got.. business I can' leave." His voice was equally as calm, and steely.

There was a long, heavy pause. "Remy always been targeted, his eyes don't exactly make him fit in. Le diable blanc, folks like t'call him. De white devil. Who's it dis time? Dose boys he tries to play wit' in de bayou? Somebody who t'inks he's de key t' whatever ritual dey wanna do?"

In the room, Remy made the stuffed animals leap around the bed, using the pillows and bunched-up blankets as obstacles. He laughed again as he dropped one and had to scramble off to retrieve it.

Rex remained calm, stood like a fortress wall that would protect that boy at all costs. "He isn't alone. He's with me and I am older than the very city you call home." Rex stated firmly. "So, he's safe."

Rex took a couple of paces, just circling the hallway a little. "These people are called The Cloaked. They are a lot darker than some kids runnin' around amongst the alligators." Rex stated. "So, either you and I can talk man to man or you can continue to send your boys to come try take the boy." He added firmly.

"But, let's get one thing straight. That boy isn't leaving my sight. I don't care if I have to topple your little guild to do it." Rex said firmly.

Silence on the line. "De Cloaked. Sounds like another cult. Wha' do dey want wit' Remy? Or do y'even know?" There was a scratching sound, like pen against paper. Jean-Luc was making a note of something.

He sighed. "Dis guild is older den you tink. So are most o' us. It'll take a bit more den a rich knight t'undo it." Jean-Luc's voice lowered. "I don' know wha' yer playin' at, bu' if you t'ink you can keep dat boy from his family, den yer mistaken. Dis guild has ties t'place y'can only dream of."

Rex clenched his free fist before taking a breath. "Family is a strong word for what you've got." He stated. "Family doesn't usually come with strings stipulated by how much you're able to steal." Rex added before glancing back at the door of the hotel.

"The Cloaked want him for their own gain. They see a power source, but I suppose you already know how that feels cause that's what you see." Rex spat angrily, a heat behind his words. "The boy stays with me." He said with a finality before hanging up.

When he returned to the room, he noticed Remy playing on the bed with his plushies. The Knight leaned against the closed door, watching for a quiet moment. He just took in the moment.

Remy was talking to himself quietly, putting on rather ridiculous accents for both the gator and the cat. It was a simple game.

"Why de cow cross de road? 'Cause de chicken was tired," The cat said. The gator responded with an exaggerated growl and Remy mushed the stuffed toys together.

Rex let a smile creep onto his face before locking the hotel room for the night. He hummed to himself and looked at Remy. "I see your cat has a sense of humour." He joked as he sat down on the bed with the boy.

"I say we get them down for bed, huh?" Rex suggested as he twisted his body slightly and pulled the blankets back for Remy to climb into bed. Rex wasn't sure he'd be able to sleep after that phone call, but he wouldn't worry Remy.

"Dey ain't very good jokes. Dat's why M'sur Gator bittin' her." Remy said with a straight face.

Remy pouted at the suggestion of sleep. "I ain't tiiired," he whined, moving away from the middle of the bed. He flopped half of the side with a dramatic sigh.

Rex laughed softly at the boy's antics and shook his head. "Well, I suppose if you're not tired, we could watch some movies?" He suggested, pointing to the small collection of movies that had come from the room.

"I'll even let you pick." Rex mentioned, nudging him towards the small stack of movies. Rex wasn't sure Remy had ever seen a movie before, but he was happy to introduce him to a few. All kid friendly of course.

Remy perked up at that. "Movie?" He slid the rest of the way off the bed, twisting to land on his knees. Perusing the stack carefully, he considered his choices with an intense look of focus.

Finally, he selected one. "Dis one?"

Rex took the movie in his hands, humming as he admired what he picked. "Aristocats? I'm sensing a theme with you." He chuckled, patting the top of his head.

He set up the movie and let Remy get settled for the night before turning on the movie for the boy. Rex took out a book, a rather thick book with a language no one else could read anymore.

"..I like cats," Remy protested, although he didn't stay grumpy for long. He sat for a moment, then shuffled over to where Rex was.

Leaning against the knight, Remy got absorbed in the movie quickly. O'Malley quickly became his favorite character, and he wiggled each time the orange tom showed up on screen.

Rex glanced down when he felt the small force lean against him. Rex was quietly surprised, but didn't say anything. He simply let Remy become absorbed in the movie whilst lightly draping his arm around the boy's shoulders.

The Knight remained quiet, taking in the old animation and the catchy songs. It had been a long time since Rex just let himself sit and enjoy the quiet domestic moments, most of his days usually spent fighting some evil or another. The same kind of evil tracking Remy.

The people down the road were a man and two boys said man had picked up along his travels. Arthur Kane had once been part of outlaw groups, hopping from town to town and marking scores before robbing or conning them. That life seemed like a genuine lifetime ago especially now that he taking care of two young boys.

The oldest of the boys was 12 year old Archer. He had come from a bad home, a daddy who preferred to drink and a mother who laid in everyone else's bed but her own. The younger of the boys was 11 year old Mikey. He was the adventurous sort, an orphan who wanted more than what the system could offer him.

Arthur was also known for his love of dogs and horses. Big dogs in particular, of which he had two that were trailing behind his and Archer's horses. Mikey was sitting in front of Arthur, secured between the cowboy's arms as he rode his large, dark brown horse he had named Callahan whilst Archer's horse was a red dun colour with a thick light blonde mane. The boy had called the horse Rodeo due to him being a little wild.

Arthur had been a million miles away when he spotted the cows blocking the road. "Goddamn.." He muttered under his breath, a gloved hand scratching at his beard. He slowed his horse, not wanting to spook the cattle, before climbing off. "You two stay here." He told the boys firmly before slowly approaching the cows to see if there was an owner around.

"Well, at least they're on horses," said Harrow as he got a better look up ahead.

Nafud focused entirely on the dogs though and he tried to keep his nerves calm. "But, they've got dogs."

Harrow immediately looked to his husband, worried not only for him but for Checkers as well. "Hey, just look at the dogs, Nafud. They're around the horses and don't seem bothered by them or the cows. Which means that they're used to horses."

Nafud drew in a breath and gave Checker's neck a gentle pat. "Yeah boy, you see that? We're going to be all right."

Harrow and Nafud gently rode through the cows, calling to them and trying to get them to turn away from Arthur and the boys. The moment they saw the boys they knew that they had to do things carefully as there was no telling what kind of experience any of them had.

Nafud tipped his hat at Arthur and nodded at him, "Afternoon there! Got any experience herding some cows? They're not ours but we're trying to wrangle up the stragglers and get them back over to Stoker's. Haven't seen you around here though, so if the horses are nervous around cattle, our ranch house is just up ahead there and cow free."

Harrow kept trying to redirect the cows away from the newcomers and get them going again but several had found just how delicious the grass was here at Sunnyside and were quite content to just sit there and graze.

"Uhg, c'mon cows…" Harrow sighed.

Arthur glanced up when seeing new faces moving towards him. He tipped his hat to Nafud and glanced to the cows. "Never really been a fan of cows. Mostly prefer dogs or horses, so I'm no help to you here friend." Arthur answered, his eyes travelling to the cows that had made themselves quite at home. "But if I had to guess, they prefer this grass to anything they're gettin' fed back home." Arthur added, the hint of a joke on his words.

He twisted to look over his shoulder at his horses, dogs, and boys before looking back at Nafud. "I'll help you shuffle these cows along, but I'd appreciate it if you had a place to stay. For the boys." Arthur bargained. He had gotten tired of staying in seedy hotels in small towns with all manner of characters lingering around. Arthur knew he could keep the boys safe, but it wasn't good for them.

"The dogs won't bite. They just look mean, but that's just them being part wolf." Arthur reassured. He tucked two fingers into either corner of his mouth ans whistled loudly, calling the two dogs over. They were huge dogs, both with thick fur and triangular ears. One had fur as white as freshly fallen snow whilst the other was as black as the night sky. "They're help herd the cattle."

Naufd watched the two dogs and gave Checkers a few more reassuring pats to his neck and gentle mane swishing. "It's okay boy. See? They're not going to hurt you."

Unfortunately for the both of them, memories of one encounter with strange dogs still haunted them and though Checkers was standing still, his mouth was pressed shut and his ears were off to the side. Nafud scritched Checkers' neck, offering him a few more reassurances and praises before looking to Harrow and to Arthur.

"I'm going to try and get these ones moving along."

Harrow nodded, fully understanding what was troubling his husband. He watched as Nafud redirected Checkers' attention back to the cows and with a few meaningful swats of the rope towards the cows, he got five to move along down the road. Harrow held Arthur back a bit to give them space.

"We love dogs too, and I'm sure so does Checkers, but we had a bad incident involving a Pitbull that was traumatic to everyone involved so they're both a bit shy." His golden palomino was sniffing the white dog, ears perked forward in curiosity. "We have some bunk houses that we rent out to a few vacationers but also keep them for guest housing when the need calls for it. You're more than welcome to one of them. The only thing I ask is just that the dogs mind their distance. We've got a few that are a bit moody at the moment."

Arthur nodded his head slowly. "They don't tend to wander far from the boys. They're protective that way." He explained, more so to calm the nerves of the horse and it's rider. He whistled to the dogs, pointing to the cows. "Get 'em boys. Walk 'em." Arthur commanded the large dogs.

The white dog hunkered down on the left side of the more stubborn cows whilst the black dog hunkered down on the right side. They nipped gently at the heels of the cattle, trying to motivate them forward and eventually a few of them moved along the road. Arthur watched his dogs, whistling every so often to get the dogs to change directions when the cows attempted to stray away.

"So, how'd these cows get loose in the first place? A fence go down or somethin'?" Arthur asked curiously. "Not everyday you come across a herd this size squeezing out." He added before whistling again for the dogs. Arthur turned back to Archer and Mikey, waving them forward but wanting them to move slowly as not to spook the cows.

Archer took hold of Rodeo's reins before glancing over at Mikey. "Just hold the reins and Callahan will do the rest, he's a good horse." Archer reassured the younger boy as both horses slowly made their way forward.

The people down the road were a man and two boys said man had picked up along his travels. Arthur Kane had once been part of outlaw groups, hopping from town to town and marking scores before robbing or conning them. That life seemed like a genuine lifetime ago especially now that he taking care of two young boys.

The oldest of the boys was 12 year old Archer. He had come from a bad home, a daddy who preferred to drink and a mother who laid in everyone else's bed but her own. The younger of the boys was 11 year old Mikey. He was the adventurous sort, an orphan who wanted more than what the system could offer him.

Arthur was also known for his love of dogs and horses. Big dogs in particular, of which he had two that were trailing behind his and Archer's horses. Mikey was sitting in front of Arthur, secured between the cowboy's arms as he rode his large, dark brown horse he had named Callahan whilst Archer's horse was a red dun colour with a thick light blonde mane. The boy had called the horse Rodeo due to him being a little wild.

Arthur had been a million miles away when he spotted the cows blocking the road. "Goddamn.." He muttered under his breath, a gloved hand scratching at his beard. He slowed his horse, not wanting to spook the cattle, before climbing off. "You two stay here." He told the boys firmly before slowly approaching the cows to see if there was an owner around.

"Well, at least they're on horses," said Harrow as he got a better look up ahead.

Nafud focused entirely on the dogs though and he tried to keep his nerves calm. "But, they've got dogs."

Harrow immediately looked to his husband, worried not only for him but for Checkers as well. "Hey, just look at the dogs, Nafud. They're around the horses and don't seem bothered by them or the cows. Which means that they're used to horses."

Nafud drew in a breath and gave Checker's neck a gentle pat. "Yeah boy, you see that? We're going to be all right."

Harrow and Nafud gently rode through the cows, calling to them and trying to get them to turn away from Arthur and the boys. The moment they saw the boys they knew that they had to do things carefully as there was no telling what kind of experience any of them had.

Nafud tipped his hat at Arthur and nodded at him, "Afternoon there! Got any experience herding some cows? They're not ours but we're trying to wrangle up the stragglers and get them back over to Stoker's. Haven't seen you around here though, so if the horses are nervous around cattle, our ranch house is just up ahead there and cow free."

Harrow kept trying to redirect the cows away from the newcomers and get them going again but several had found just how delicious the grass was here at Sunnyside and were quite content to just sit there and graze.

"Uhg, c'mon cows…" Harrow sighed.

Arthur glanced up when seeing new faces moving towards him. He tipped his hat to Nafud and glanced to the cows. "Never really been a fan of cows. Mostly prefer dogs or horses, so I'm no help to you here friend." Arthur answered, his eyes travelling to the cows that had made themselves quite at home. "But if I had to guess, they prefer this grass to anything they're gettin' fed back home." Arthur added, the hint of a joke on his words.

He twisted to look over his shoulder at his horses, dogs, and boys before looking back at Nafud. "I'll help you shuffle these cows along, but I'd appreciate it if you had a place to stay. For the boys." Arthur bargained. He had gotten tired of staying in seedy hotels in small towns with all manner of characters lingering around. Arthur knew he could keep the boys safe, but it wasn't good for them.

"The dogs won't bite. They just look mean, but that's just them being part wolf." Arthur reassured. His current travels had taken him to a small livestock town. He had set up camp a little ways outside of town and had decided to venture into town to see what sort of money he could conjure for himself. At his side were his most loyal dogs, two large wolf crossbreeds. One with a coat as white as snow whilst the other had a coat as dark as night. Most people stared, occasionally a child would wander up to pet the dogs before running off.

Arthur had been passing the saloon when he spotted a little commotion between two buildings. Two men as wide as walls had cornered what Arthur assumed was an older teen boy. Arthur slowly and casually wandered down towards them. "There a problem here, fellas?"

Steve scowls up at the two men that were cornering him, his lip bloodied as one of them had already hit him before the stranger came up.

He shoots the stranger a look, "I can handle myself," he says stubbornly, even as one of the men quickly grabs his hair to yank him down to his knees, "He was mouthin' off, it don't concern you," he growls, glaring down at Steve who met his eye defiantly

Arthur scoffed out a laugh when the young man claimed he could handle things himself. "What a mighty fine job you are doin' there, son. Everythin' seems well handled to me." Arthur stated sarcastically before turning his gaze to the stranger.

"It concerns me now. Pickin' on a kid half your size, ain't you fools got better things to do with your time?" Arthur spat as his dogs began to circle the group. They were slow, hunkering down with ears pinned back. "Now, you got my boys ready to lunge and I'll warn you, when they bite? They don't let go." Arthur warned.

He took another step forward, hand ghosting his pistol which was tucked away in it's holster. "Let the boy go."

The two men hadn't even registered the dogs but it was hard to ignore them now as they circled them. Steve looks nervous, he's never had much luck with dogs but he hopes that's about to change. He'd rather get knocked down a few times than deal with a dog bite.

One of them looks ready to argue but the second notices the gun and lets go of Steve, nudging his friend, "Lets get outta here," he mumbles, gesturing to the holster on Arthur's hip. They both eye him up and then the dogs before running up the alley to get away.

Steve brushes himself off and bends down to pick up the few dollars they had knocked from his hand, watching Arthur silently for a moment. "I ain't a child," he says irritably, knowing his size and stature made him seem younger than he is.

Arthur moved his hand away from his pistol once the thugs had run off. He glanced back to Steve, watching him scrounge up his money whilst Arthur leaned back against a wooden pillar. "Well, you coulda fooled me." He answered before whistling to the large dogs.

The dogs returned to their relaxed stance. They trotted back to Arthur's side, the black furred one resting on his haunches at Arthur's leg whilst the white furred one padded across the dirt to Steve. A big pair of amber eyes stared up at the young man, his fluffy white tail swaying side to side whilst sniffing at Steve's pants.

Arthur watched his dog curiously. "So, you wanna tell me why they were so pissed at you?" He asked, letting his gaze rise back to meet Steve's eyes.

Steve watches the white dog get close to him but stays still, cautiously offering him a hand to sniff now too as he seems curious.

He glances to the stranger with more caution than he showed the dog, clearly more comfortable with animals now that he was sure they wouldn't attack him.

"They were tryna scam the bartender, nearly got a way with it too before I pointed out their products were a scam, and they didn't take kindly to being exposed," Steve explains quietly, slowly moving to scratch the top of the white dog's head.

The white dog sat down in front of Steve, allowing the young man to pet him. He seemed to be the more social of the two dogs that accompanied Arthur wherever he went. His tail swept across the dirt, coating the white fur with a layer of yellowish brown dust.

"Got two boys I picked up a few towns over and then I got a whole pack of four legged strays. You met two of 'em." He motioned to the two dogs with them right now. Stoker's Farm was renowned for having one of the largest acreage in the area along with a large herd of cattle. It was also known for its main cowboy, John Wyatt, who kept an eye on the herd and controlled others around him like a drill sergeant in the military. He was not someone that Nafud or Harrow liked to be around much less help, but with so many cattle having stampeded through the fencing and now were scattered out on the road, they had to help.

"Well I was wanting to get in some roping practice today," said Nafud with a little laugh as he urged his pinto along.

"Yeah well I would have just as easily gone for a nice relaxing rest on the porch with a cold glass of lemonade watching over our ranch, not out here doing this," Harrow replied in a rather grumpy tone. Nafud just smiled. "It's okay. We can still do that. Just after we do this."
