unironically i think the moment in the game that best contextualizes kims character is the quest "recruit detective kim kitsuragi". just. the fact it is an option in of itself. is telling.

the fact that if you are just nice enough and decently competent at your job and, well, Don't Get Him Fucking Killed, kim wants to join your precinct. join you. isnt that fucking crazy. why is he so sure he can. why is he so sure he wants to. does he have nothing of value Left in his precinct?? what the fuck.

the fact that he - for the first and only time in the game - smokes a second cigarette if you leave without him. isnt that insane. isnt that fucking Insane.

the fact that harry changed his life as well. not in some passing fancy way, not as an Experience he Will Remember, as a force and as a person and as a gleaming light in the midst of bone deep loneliness and grief. the fact that, arguably, he needs harry just as much as harry needs him. hes a lonely tin soldier trying to hollow himself and not want anything.

Whatever you do, dont think about the fact that robert kurvitz said that kim was designed to find harry funny. Dont think about how kim purposefully makes himself look as boring as possible to clutch onto any dignity from the other racist pigs sorry i mean cops and then he gets paired up with a new partner who just finds him the coolest person on the planet on the first night they have together. Dont think about how harry literally sees kim with a halo over his head every time he talks to him.

Also, never ever think about how harrys biggest trauma is being abandoned by the person he loved the most and then getting paired up with a person so loyal to his partner that no matter how bad of a person he is, no matter how many bad choices he made, he still gets on his knees in a panic, forgetting about the danger that could also get kim himself shot as well, to try to stop harry from bleeding out in the tribunal.
