âYes. And youâre Kara, right?â
âYes,â She repeated with a nod. âI think thatâs the first time someone has actually remembered me without a prompt.â

âYes. And youâre Kara, right?â
âYes,â She repeated with a nod. âI think thatâs the first time someone has actually remembered me without a prompt.â
âYouâve got me curious. Thereâs no way Iâd back out now!â Allison said, smiling at the redhead. âCome on, we have answers to find.â
âGreat!â Smiling widely, she started heading toward the library, glancing back to see if the other girl was following her. âAllison, right? Iâve seen you around before.â
âThere might be some in the library. Or maybe Professor Arrington might know? I imagine it would be best to talk to him first.â
âI was actually just about to head to the library...if youâd like to join me?â Karaâs smile faltered slightly. âThough, of course, you donât have to.â
âI donât think it was rambling,â Morena shrugged. âI think itâs fine. You were just asking a question, thatâs all. Thereâs nothing to apologize for.â
âOh, well, thank you.â She smiled, extending her hand out to the girl. âIâm Kara. Itâs nice to meet you.â
Rose smiled a bit before nodding. Sheâd never really given it much thought herself but she didnât mind thinking about it now. âYou work with animals? In what way? Like a⊠animal healer or whatever theyâre called?â She asked trying to remember what her gran said they were called.
âVeterinarians, yes.â Kara giggled and nodded. âMy god father is a Veterinarian and I work at the clinic with him. He does some great things with muggle medicine, though I have to admit, being able to heal animals with magic could really help him too.â
âWhen I said âpenny for your thoughtsâ I really didnât know what I was getting myself into, huh?â
Cordelia considered what her friend was saying, a small crease forming on her forehead as she mulled over it all. âI meanâŠâ She didnât exactly know how to articulate her thoughts, so simple hand flailing would have to do. âPerhaps youâre overthinking it a little? Whoâs to say a wizard didnât just experiment on a few animals and the creatures we have today are their mutant offspring?â she raised an eyebrow in question, but it was undercut by the fact that the blonde was trying not to giggle.
She giggled, a bit flustered when Cordelia pointed out her rambling. âSorry...â Kara shook her head, trying to calm down her thoughts a little bit. âArenât you Ravenclaws supposed to be the overthinkers? Itâs not my fault I have a curious mind, Cord, donât poke fun!â
âEvolution? Maybe the magic affected them differently and caused them to change? They might have looked similar a long time ago.â
âThatâs what I was thinking!â Her face lit up and she couldnât help but laugh. âAnd I was wondering if it was possible to trace lineage back to see which creatures are connected to which animals.â
âWhy are you sorry? Donât be. Everyone says I do the same thing. I donât, but they say that I do.â Morena thought back to all that her brother had said to her, an annoyed expression appearing on her face.
âI donât know, I-I just...Usually people donât like rambling. I guess apologizing has become a habit I should break too?â
âWhat did you read?â Lily asked, genuinely interested. She loved Care of Magical Creatures, and Magical Creatures Club was her favorite of all the clubs and societies she belonged to.
âIt might have been Fantasitc Beasts...There was a line in it that said something about the differences between muggle and magical creatures. How no two were alike and it just made me think about how far back youâd have to trace a species before you could find similarities.â
âId say that last bit you said is it. There are magical creatures and then there are muggle animals. Or maybe it works like with us? Non-magic creatures can have magical creatures and magic creatures can have animals?â Rose mused before smiling at the other redhead. âAny particular reason youâre asking?â
âOh, no,â Kara shook her head, blushing slightly when she realized sheâd been rambling. âJust...interested, I guess. I work with animals while Iâm home and I just realized that none of them were the same as here.â
Lilyâs eyebrows lifted, pondering the other redheadâs questions. âI honestly donât know. I do know there are muggle animals that are similar to certain magical creatures, but Iâm not sure if theyâre related somehow.â
She smiled, shaking her head slightly. âSorry if this isnât all that interesting, Iâd just read something in my Care of Magical Creatures textbook that made me think about this.â
âMaybe itâs like with Wizards and Muggles. Theyâre the same, they just⊠have different variations.â Allison couldnât help but point out, overhearing the girlâs question.Â
âWell, that has me wondering, though.â She smiled softly at the brunette. âWhy arenât there magical cows or anything? After the non-magical ones got separated, did they both change into completely different animals?
âI didnâtâŠI didnât understand a single word of that. I mean I did, but maybe it works like Muggles and wizards do? I think magic animals came first. And then something went wrong with some of the animals.â Morena thought back to what her father told her; the magic gene always came first.
âSorry, I--â Kara tapped her temple, trying to think through everything. âI tend to ramble when really start talking. Itâs a habit Iâm trying to break, actually, sometimes it just sounds like gibberish...â
âNo, what Iâm trying to say is that we have animals--or creatures, I guess--but not the same ones. So did muggle animals evolve from magical creatures? Or vice versa? Are there muggle animal counterparts that are indirectly related to magical creatures?â

She brushed her girlfriendâs tears from her face with shaky fingers, letting them linger far longer than necessary. âI will always love you too. I loved no one before you and I will love no one after you, Kara Belton. And in whatever comes after this life, I will find you again and I will love you there as well.â Allisonâs quiet tears turned into painful sobs. She forced herself to say the next words. âI wonât. I wonât blame myself.â It was a lie, but she would say whatever she had to to make it easier for her girlfriend. Allison would blame herself for the rest of her life.Â
Leaning down, she pressed her lips to Karaâs, ignoring the salty tang of blood that coated the otherâs mouth. She needed Kara to know how much she had loved her. And she needed her to know how sorry she was; that she hadnât been able to save her, that sheâd broken her promise.Â
Kara nodded, the hand cupping Allisonâs cheek lightly as she knew what would happen soon. Her tears were being brushed away, but they also started to slow, her body no longer able to give what it didnât have. âI love you s-so much.â She wanted Allison to have no doubt in her mind that Kara didnât blame her, and when she felt the kiss, she knew the feeling was mutual. Her eyes fluttered closed for a moment, but she knew the moment wouldnât last. When she finally pulled away, Kara could feel her breathing slowing down, no longer able to feel the pain. âIt...d-doesnât hurt anymore...â
Karaâs hand dropped from Allisonâs cheek, all strength leaving her body. Her head rolled to the side for a moment, her eyes closing halfway. A few residual tears fell from the corners of her eyes, her gaze watching Allisonâs tears drip down her cheeks, the motion almost hypnotic. Fear gripped her heart, knowing what was coming next, but sheâd fought against it for too long. Any ounce of fight she had was gone, the darkness pulling her. âP-Please be happy...do that f-for me...âÂ
Within seconds, all the sounds around her were silenced, her vision narrowing in on Allison, no matter how blurry it was, just was just happy she could say good bye to her girlfriend. âI love you...â The words came out as a whisper, her lungs not offering any more. Shortly after she spoke, Karaâs body went limp. Sheâd carried the weight of the world for so long her muscles had gotten too used to the strain, but letting go was all she could do. The blood had stopped flowing so profusely, her heart no longer pumping it into her veins and out of the wounds. Her eyes closing one last time, any last thought she might have had died on her lips, leaving Allison behind.

Despite the myriad of healing spells and the intensity behind them, Karaâs wounds continued to sluggishly ooze. Allison could feel the tension building up inside her, fear and despair roaring to life within her chest as she realized that she was going to lose Kara. Sheâd promised to always protect the girl in her arms and sheâd failed. It was all her fault. The love of her life was dying and it was all her fault. âOf course I did, my love. Nothing could ever keep me from you.â
Tears burned in her eyes and she let them fall, not wanting her vision of Kara to be blurred for even a moment. Not when she had so precious few left. âSh, donât apologize.â She murmured, cupping Karaâs jaw. Her thumb rubbed across the redheadâs cheek, smearing blood against her skin. As carefully as possible, she picked the younger girl up and set her gently into her lap. âYou saved a little girlâs life. Youâre a hero. Donât ever apologize for something like that. Not when itâs why I love you so much.â Her heart felt as though it was being shattered apart with a hammer and she welcomed the agony. She should be forced to suffer as much as Kara.Â
As soon as Allison stopped the spells, She knew something was wrong. The spells werenât working, none of them. Kara had been bleeding for too long, to the point that healing wouldnât stop the inevitable. She felt another few tears fall from her eyes as she noticed Allison was crying. Never once had she seen her girlfriend cry, nothing had ever been so terrible that the girl above her would be brought to tears. She winced at being moved, but it was instantly more comfortable. Maybe she was destined for this from the moment she stepped foot in Hogwarts, to die at the hands of a Death Eater, but to die in the arms of the woman she loved.
âI l-love you,â She said, letting more tears fall from her eyes, cutting paths through blood on her face. Kara could hear Aurors yelling across the room, calling for help while tending for injured, witches and wizards who werenât quite hopeless yet. Faintly squeezing Allisonâs hand, she felt her lip quivering . âItâs not y-your fault..remember that. I d-donât want to leave...and I c-canât. Not until you p-promise me. Donât b-blame yourself. Youâve done so m-much for me...â She could feel herself shaking, the loss of blood finally attacking her vitals, the pressure on her chest growing, making her breathing more ragged by the second. âE-Ever since I first m-met you, I loved y-you. I always will.â Kara reached a hand up to cup Allisonâs jaw, her vision either going blurry from the tears or loss of blood, she wasnât sure. âPlease...D-Donât blame yourself.â

Allison tore through the ballroom, searching for any sign of her girlfriend. Sheâd been separated from Kara early on in the fight and hadnât been able to locate her during any of the proceeding chaos. She carefully scanned the face of every person she passed; from the ones milling the small, hysterical crowds to the unmoving bodies crumpled against the floor. But it wasnât until she went to search the other rooms that Allison found her, lying in a heap right in the doorway.Â
Her stomach dropped and she flew to the girlâs side, dropping to her knees as she took in the younger girlâs wounds. The small whimper and flinch was enough to prove that Kara was alive, if only barely. âIts okay, itâs me. Itâs me Kara.â She whispered, stroking her girlfriendâs cheek in an attempt to calm her. âIâm going to heal you okay? You donât need to be scared. Iâm here.â Allison continued to stroke Karaâs hair while she cast the healing spell, her heart clenching as she took in her loveâs damaged body. Deep inside herself, she knew it was unlikely sheâd be able to fully heal Kara. The thought made her insides freeze and she tried to push it away. She would do whatever it took to save Kara. âCan you hear me love?âÂ
A few tears fell from her eyes as she heard Allisonâs voice. You donât need to be scared, Kara heard her say, but fear was only of the only things she felt at the moment. Familyâs screams of anguish hit her ears and she knew what was happening. The death Eaters were gone, but now that there was no more chaos, the death toll was rising. âA-Allison.â Karaâs eyes looked up at her girlfriendâs face. âYou f-found me...â She smiled a bit, trying to move into a sitting position, but instantly wincing and sucking in a sharp breath.
âIâm s-sorry,â She said once the pain lessened, welcoming the feeling of Allisonâs hand stroking her cheek. Kara brought her own hand up to rest against Allisonâs. She may have felt fear for how extensive her injuries were, but her love for her girlfriend over powered it all. Her breathing only became more ragged, as the seconds went by. She was losing too much blood and her mouth felt dry, but her the pain started to go away. âThere was a...a l-little girl,â Kara paused, feeling like something was pushing down on her chest. Ignoring it, she continued. âShe wouldâve d-died..I couldnât stay s-safe...and l-let her be killed.â Kara searched Allisonâs eyes after she explained her reasoning. âI-Iâm sorry...â
