Adolf Krischanitz, Hermann Czech, Diener & Diener, Max Dudler, Hans Kollhoff, Peter Märkli, Meili Peter, Otto Steidle, & Heinz Tesar - Mustersiedlung 9=12, Hadersdorf 2007. A low-cost housing development on the outskirts of Vienna, with a masterplan drafted by Krischanitz as an experiment in subsidized housing and construction materials. The brief was fairly simple; all plots of land for the individual buildings were to be the same, at a scale somewhere between a single family house and apartment building, with each building to be made of concrete. Though this, the deceivingly simple forms display great variety within consistency, as experiments in form, layout, color, and structure result in varying aesthetic appearances and interior spatial configurations. From the dyed concrete in the Meili & Peter project, which exploits the limitations of concrete formwork structures and highlights its restraints (img 1 & 9), to the complex interior spatial conditions of Diener & Diener’s project that segments of the traditional reinforced concrete slab for double-height interiors and is expressed with varying densities of board-formed patterning on the facade (img 7), or the prefabricated concrete panels in the Dudler project (img 4), this humble complex aims to re-define suburban growth, and showcase the potentials of a building material typically overlooked for such a low-cost project.
