last thing i'll say on this tonight but the reason it bothers me is because like. troy's book starts with him being publicly retaliated against for calling out dallas kent for being a rapist. troy does the right thing in calling out this actual irredeemable bastard and he's the one punished for it while dallas is protected. and this kickstarts him actively working to stop hiding behind that homophobic douchebag mask and be a better person. he makes the choice to do it and keep at it whether people forgive him or accept it or not. and it's before he's got any reliable support system- he's not close to his new team or anyone else yet, but he still wants to be better. and he doesn't expect anything from anyone for it. aside from his relationship with harris, troy's entire book is about him working to be a better person. and so many people's first reaction to a character genuinely wanting to grow and change from his past mistakes is "no actually youre worse and irredeemable for reasons i just made up"? that just doesn't sit right with me.

likewise when people on here are losing their shit over RR taking a light hand with addressing homophobia at points or being too flippant about coming out of the closet or whatever….. am i the only one who remembers all the rhetoric at the time about “queer joy” and how our stories should be all about that and not AIDS or oppression or whatever. as i’m typing this i’m legit wondering if they are too young to remember all the endless culture wars re: who got to write what and what constituted good representation etc etc because the pub industry was a huge lightning rod for that stuff

- you are not The Character

- how you feel about a situation does not correlate to how the character feels or should feel.

- your sense of morality and ethics is not the character’s.

- they will have views and perspectives and do things you disagree with. that does not mean they’re ’badly written’

- the character doesn’t need your ‘protection’ -they are a storytelling device.

something key about TLG for me as well is that being in a relationship with someone who has severe depression isn’t always equal. It can’t be- and it shouldn’t be. Relationships are rarely ever exactly 50/50. Sometimes one person is going to need more love and care and support and they won’t be able to fully reciprocate because they’re Literally Not Well.

A healthy relationship with someone who’s mentally ill is about understanding that, and balancing it as best you can.

kinda bums me out that every conversation about homophobia in this fandom inevitably devolves into an assumption that Only straight women and gay men like HR. as if queer women and gnc people can’t resonate with a story about how debilitating homophobia is. Like we can address the fetishization of queer men without acting like our lived experiences are so severed that other queer people can’t personally connect to a story like this

In my humble opinion, Hollanov has that gay Romeo and Juliet dynamic with the NHL. In the sense that, their rivalry earns a lot of people a lot of money. And it’s really good for PR. So with the added layer of homophobia, if it’s found out that Shane and Ilya are together, they are “staining” the honour of the NHL. Hence, the metaphorical honour killing the NHL and Crowell tries to do of both of them in the second half of TLG.

Okay you know what, I NEED that scene in season 2, when Shane is jealous of Troy for the fact that he gets to spend time with Ilya in public and go to gay bars. Not only because I find Jealous!Shane funny, but also because that is one of the few scenes in the book that actually shows us how the closet is suffocating Shane too. And that he also really fucking misses Ilya!
