As part of my photo project about ecology, I tried to focus more on a solution than on a problem as we usually do when we think about pollution, destruction, etc. while I was thinking on what I can possibly do, I came with the idea to combine my major on biotechnology with its intersection with art and design, at this time a lot of people have told me that biotech has nothing to do with design at all, but sometimes we ignore what we cannot understand, when I changed my major I didn’t knew it either but there’s always a little faith and possibility at the end. So I tried to think of different ideas to represent these two branches into one, my first thought was to use Petri dishes and different color lights as it is seen on science photos (and more attractive), then one by one I was thinking of building these four elements inspired by some previous research, first it was the dress out of algae, then the building out of bacteria concrete, third the shoe out of spider modified silk and finally the chair made out of fungi. I explained this idea to the photographer in lead and he loved the idea…I was so excited to get this idea in to the making and into reality, I spend a couple of days collecting everything I needed and making up these prototypes, then improvise a little “studio” on my room, set up all the lights and started photoshooting.
With this Biodesign: Four Future Elements project I intend to represent and let people know about future materials and technologies, the intersection of art, design and biotechnology (it does exist) and its possible applications…
The final photo was shown in the Museo El Centenario from Feb 17th to 19th in San Pedro Garza Garcia, NL, Mexico.
