Having gone to many galleries in the past couple of weeks, weâve decided to create an art exhibition ourselves. Taking on the idea of VALUE, weâve decided to explore the differences between perspectives when viewing an artwork - namely, the difference between âintrinsicâ value (how an artist might view their own work) and âextrinsicâ value (how others - an audience - might view the same artwork).Â
Each group member shall take a few past works and put them on display within the context of a gallery, with our event being an exhibition called âRetrospective: A Studentâs Perspectiveâ. Each work shall be exhibited alongside bar graphs that will act as value-determiners, juxtaposing the artistâs perspective with that of an audience. The event itself makes the assumption that the artists showcased are well-established and distinguished within the art world, however, the uniting feature of the event is that all the works are produced by students, taking on the question of how much value each artwork holds.
The above links are to existing retrospective works and exhibits which we drew inspiration from.Â

Drawing upon works seen in large gallery exhibitions the group decided to extend this idea into our event. Originally the idea for value was that of an auction, where we take our works from previous assignments and auction off their value, however we decided to take a different approach to the idea of value through that of a gallery retrospective. Similarly to our original auction idea, we will take works from our pasts and put them on display within the context of a gallery. We will exhibit the value of these works visually with bar graphs to either side of the display illustrating both intrinsic and extrinsic value, and literally through gallery card highlighting extrinsic value, and spoken word demonstrating the works value to the artist.
The above links are to existing retrospectives in which we draw inspiration from. We have made the conscious decision to represent out display similarly to those of existing, in the format of many artists with a uniting feature, rather than a single artistâs life work. The event makes the assumption that the artists involved are distinguished within the art world, and so the uniting feature of the event is that all the works are student works.
Gallery Statements for Assignment #3Â
Week 10 - static, interference and glitch
take #1
Week 10 - static, interference and glitches exercise.
ExperimentÂ
Playing around with textures and sounds of certain materials - I thought it was interesting and I think I would want to use this in my final work.
Brainstorming - Interactivity
I think itâs quite interesting that as technology and digital media grow in our everyday lives, so does the focus on interactivity grow. Traditionally art was considered a visual medium, with the traditional mediums of painting, and sculpture showing off the artistâs technical skills. But now in our postmodern world, the ideology and identity of art does not fit any label - with the rise of performance-based, site specific artworks that allow for the audienceâs physical action, manipulates their sensory encounters and showcases the artistâs expression or intentions.Â
Brainstorming #2
- to brainstorm my ideas for my work - i first googled âartworks with found objectsâ
- interesting artworks - mostly sculpture and paintings using found materials?Â
- stenciling? maybe on the bottom is an assortment of different found materials with a piece of wood over the top. however it would be hard to mount on the wall...
-maybe a sculpture of made from armature wire? i was thinking of using pliers to sculpture a tree and using like frabrics as leaves. or perhaps i could use other objects than wire as a base...
- i think trash art would be relevant to my work however some of the limitations of making street art / trash art would be space and time restriction - most of these works are quite large scaleÂ
-maybe the work would be interactive?? because i think a variety of materials would best be suited to be interacted with - one of my main problems with my last assignment is that it was limited by the visual medium of posters.Â
- i could tie this to rebellion by redefining the use of these everyday materials in our life?? for example these scraps of fabrics can be used to stimulate the viewer rather than just considered trash...
Brainstorming #1
- what i liked most about my work is how i used materials and i think i would like to continue using those for my next project.
- what i found difficult was was the restriction of the poster format. I believe that my next assessment would best be presented as a sculpture or installation?Â
-considering going to reverse garbage to find more materials for my next assessment ~ i quite liked the materials i found.Â
-i think what would be interesting is making it a tactile work --> perhaps like unwrapping layers and layers - with each one being a different material?Â
Poster - Assessment 1
Artist Statment
Can creative acts be rebellious when rebellion has become canonised in art, design and media histories? What would a contemporary creative rebellion look like?Â
My first step in my process was to brainstorm the idea of ârebellionâ - the literal meaning and examples of it throughout art history. I thought that since this assignment was to be represented through a poster, I decided that my concept was to ârebelâ against the conventions of a stereotypical poster. A poster to me, is meant to communicate a message visually, and are designed to be eye catching and informative.
I was inspired by one of the example posters â an interactive poster that actively engaged the audience. My original concept was the subversion of communicating visually, - but rather than using visual signs and symbols, I wanted to engage the other senses such as touch. For my assignment, I gathered materials that were considered âunconventionalâ such as found materials from my home and the creative centre, âReverse Garbage.â However, I found that the concept was deep not enough to substantiate a âposterâ and went back to researching.
Through further research, I was inspired by âWhite on Whiteâ by Kazimir Malevich, which was ârebellingâ against the traditional conventions of art by using abstraction and geometrical properties. I liked that it was experimental and innovative, and that the Modernistsâ ideals of rebelling against traditional conventions of European Art, reflected my concept. Therefore, I chose to cover the entire poster in white paint, to make it as plain and visually unappealing to the audience, which ârebelsâ against the traditional idea of a poster which is uses visual signs and symbols to grab the audienceâs attention. I also found that the white paint highlighted the textures and emphasised the variety of materials that I used. Like the Modernistsâ ideals of progress and revolution reflects context of the technologies and discoveries of sciences in their civilisation, I thought that my visually unappealing poster rebels against the saturated world of technology, where we are surrounded by attention grabbing and visually appealing media.

âCan creative acts be rebellious when rebellion has become canonised in art, design and media histories? What would a contemporary creative rebellion look like?âÂ
For my project I decided that I would do the rebellion question, and that made me consider the conventions of a poster, and that I wanted to incorporate different materials to communicate my idea of my concept.
I wanted to use found objects around my home, to play with texture and interactivity, so as part of my research Anna recommended me the ECOBRIDGE project and Reverse Garbage - which was a creative reuse center which seems like a great way to find materials for my project.
While I was researching and looking at poster examples posted on Moodle, I noticed that one of the posters that stood out to me the most was an interactive poster. That peaked my curiosity, and I googled âinteractive postersâ and through looking at the results I think the concept would fit in with my concept of interactivity and texture. Since I was going to split my A2 poster into smaller A4 posters, I needed different ways to draw attention and to promote interactivity in my posters.
I began researching ârebellionâ in art throughout history, and came upon the Modernists, and their philosophy of embracing art for artâs sake. What particularly influenced my work was the Suprematisim movement, especially the work of Kazimir Malevich, âWhite on Whiteâ , an abstract oil painting (1918). What I liked about the Suprematism and Modernist movement as a whole was that Modernism was essentially a revolutionary movement of the time that sought to redefine the way the civilization at that time viewed science, art and politics. This ârebelliousâ attitude stemmed from the dissatisfaction with the European culture, and artists sought to break out of traditional rules of âartâ, and as a result ânew artâ that was experimental and innovative to the audience, as prior to this movement âartâ was judged by the literal imitation of reality, and this movement popularised the idea of âart for artâs sake.â The rebellious and experimental attitude of the Modernistsâ was a result of the new and revolutionary discovery of science, psychology and politics, thus upturning any traditional ideas of the Western Civilization.
