My Phenomenal Mother // We stand in solidarity with all the mothers who were victims of Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy. Although I agree with immigration laws that protect us from letting people with dangerous criminal records into our country, I don’t believe that those seeking asylum from unimaginable violence in their home countries is a loophole in immigration law. But whether you agree or not, does it justify separating mothers and their children throughout the process? Around 15,000 kids have been detained to date and I’m sickened by this inhumanity.// I reflect on my privilege and blessings to have parents who left Peru during the terrorist attacks of The Shining Path in search for a better life for their family in the 80s, during a time when our government didn’t harshly prosecute immigrants for seeking safety. I’m immensely grateful for my mother, for her courage, tenacity, and sacrifice to take a leap of faith with 7 month old me for a better opportunity in this country.
