This artwork set are composed of two part; a brooch and a bangle, both are designed to be adjustable and wearable without specific gender associated with each. Evolved from the theme Binary: Organic vs Synthetic that has been engaged in the poster project before this. During the reflection process for the poster, the realization that a three-dimensional form will be a better form of presentation in engaging theme such as this, which later influenced the practices in class activities and experiments biased towards the more physical product. “Scoliosis Brace” (2015) by Unya shows personalized artwork and the action of wearing such works functions as a political presentation, inspired the idea of a wearable artwork that could addresses bigger issues in relation to the original purpose of jewelry decoration. The next experiment with the focus around time and context start to bring up the grey areas between the opposite organic and synthetic. When labelling the items found and rearranging the information collected from survey of ‘number of organic vs non-organics on your person’, it is clear that there is rarely anything that is fully organic or synthetic in our current timeframe, but it is still possible to systematically organize them in the range scale of their ‘organic-ness’. With the experiments surrounding the idea of value, two different works based on different scale of measurement are produced. The first work is based on the scale of personal attachment and its uniqueness; while the second based on the scale of skill and labor put in. both the personal and physical scale of value are important aspects that follows into the final work.
Both the bangle and the brooch has taken the hand gesture from Michelangelo’s “The Creation of Adam”, with the ambiguity of which side is giving to the other, this has reflected in the intentional strip design for the bangle and the suggestive figure of hands on the brooch. The form that the bangle has taken resembles a pair of intimately brushing hands, adding to the personalization of this artwork. Both the works are based using plastic and foundational medium which wool twines or other materials has been plugged onto. The way these materials interacted resembles the vague equilibrium between the organic and man-made. The brooch has a more solid composition using the round rim to include the binaries as a whole, with some definite but mostly in the middle of the organic scale, adding of natural materials such as coconut shell; fossilized coral and labradorite (a type of gemstone that are sometimes mistaken for artificial material because of its light refraction ability). The labor-intensive nature of the two increased their value despite their material value.
