Perpetrator: Robert Hawkins
Age at the time: 19 (May 17, 1988 )
Location: Westroads Mall, Omaha, Nebraska
Day of the Attack: December 5, 2007
Robert Arthur “Robbie” Hawkins was born on May 17, 1988 in Suffolk, England. His parents, Ronald Hawkins and Maribel Rodriguez, were Americans living in the UK on a military base due to the fact they were in the Air Force. His parents divorced when he was 3 years old. He moved to America when he was around 4 years old. He lived in Bellevue, Nebraska, which is near Omaha.
He attended and was expelled from Fort Calhoun High School in 2005 since he was dealing drugs. After that, he went to Papillion-La Vista High School. He got a GED after dropping out in 2006. In 2007, he attempted to join the US army. He was rejected.
Robbie was diagnosed with ADD, PTSD,ODD, and a mood disorder during his childhood. Robbie was first noticed at 4 to have violent behaviors. He would hurt other kids. This led to him being hospitalized. He was hospitalized multiple times. One of the times was in May of 2002. He had just turned 14. He had made a threat against his stepmother, saying he would kill her. He became a “ward of the state” 4 months after, around September of 2002. The Department of Health and Human Services became Robbie's legal guardian. He spent 24 months in foster care and group homes. He was unwilling to improve, which caused them to return him to the family. He lived with two friends in 2006, when he was around 18 years old. He had gotten 1 drug charge as a. minor. He was always pretty medicated but it did not seem to do much.
Robbie really hated his step mother. He hated his father as well. His mother claimed Robbie was physically and sexually abused by him as a child. His stepmother, Candace, seemed to hit Robbie at times. An article mentions how she searched his backpack for cigarettes at 13 years old.. He got mad at her, and then she hit him. Her ring cut him. During his hospitalization at 14, he apparently told a doctor, "I hope they get into a car accident.”.
He claimed he "knew where the knives were located, and she would leave the house in a body bag.". He said this in response to the idea that he would be sent back home. He did end up apologizing to her, but she did not accept it. in 2005, robbie attempted suicide by overdose.
“ On Mother's Day, when patients were told to draw cards for their loved ones, Robbie drew a picture of a noose for his stepmother.”
2007 was a hard year for Robbie. He had a job at McDonalds, which he was fired from after he had stolen 17 dollars from the register. At the same time, he had found out his girlfriend cheated on him, which caused their splitting. He also got upset with a girl and threatened to burn down her house. Apparently it was over a CD Player that she did not even steal. At the end of 2007 is when he committed the massacre. He was already suicidal. He had been. He left a note. He left a voicemail to his mother, and a text to his ex. A quote from his suicide note: “just want to take a few of shit with me... just think tho, I'm gonna be fuckin famous.” It's said he may have visited a friend beforehand.
Robbie.entered the Von Maur in Westroads Mall at 1:36 pm. He did not have a weapon with him. He soon left. He walked back in and went up the elevator. He had a Century WASR-10 semi-automatic rifle with him. Robbie stole the weapon used in the attack from his stepfather. He kept it under his sweatshirt. He had two 30 round magazines too. He took the elevator up to the top floor. He must have pulled out the weapon in the elevator.
1:46- Robbie left the elevator on the third floor. He began to shoot, which killed 2 women. He turned and fired below, which killed 3 people and injured 1 other. He then shot at the customer service desk, which killed 3 more. Then he turned the gun on himself. He killed 8 people. He shot 12 people total.
