That hug pulled a breath from her lungs that she hadn’t known she was holding, one that sounded far too much like a sigh—laced with emotion Choked up even, though she willed it all away as she took another breath. As she watched as Emily made herself comfortable on the ground before her. “I don’t know what he’s done—or rather, his family…” she trailed off then, the thought of where her fears truly lay all but forgotten as Emily went on.
Something clicked for Carolyn then, the conversation they had had at the wedding making all the more sense as she sat there looking at the other. There wasn’t judgement or even worry in her eyes, no those twin blues held a calm. A knowledge that Emily would be alright. That she and her baby would—regardless of who she told, or what fight may be ahead. “Was planning,” she mused then, not truly a question, “Is that why you decided to stay?”
Regardless of her reasons, Carolyn was grateful to have her friend. Her sister. She wasn’t sure if she’d be able to do what would need to come next, if she didn’t have Emily in her corner.
“Look at us,” she would say then, a smile edging in upon her features, “Still doing things the same.”

Nodding along, Emily’s mind began working. She was analyzing Carolyn’s situation at every angle she could think of, calculating their next move. “If it’s just money they’re going to be throwing towards this, I have more. So don’t worry. We won’t let them take Avery.” She said confidently, reaching out for her phone in search for her lawyer’s number.
Emily froze for a moment at Carolyn’s question. While she wanted to tell Carolyn everything, she was afraid to add more worries on her plate. “Marcus isn’t all bad...” She finally decided to comment, relaxing her posture. “I don’t know what will happen after, but maybe he’s what’s good for me and our baby right now... He’s trying.” Trying, the word exchoed in her mind as soon as she heard herself say it. It tasted bitter in her tongue... The word reminded her so much of her own mother’s excuses for her father’s behaviors.
Letting out an airy laugh, a small smile would appear on her face as she focused on her phone again. “Different, but the same.” She agreed, before dialing the number of her lawyer. As it rang, she turned to Carolyn again. “I’m calling my lawyer now and you can ask whatever questions you might have. Don’t worry about anything else. He’s the best lawyer in New York and I’ve paid him a lot of money all these years to know his loyalty.”
When someone picked up from the other line, Emily put the phone on speaker. “William, it’s me Emily Turner. My friend has a case I wanted you to look into.” Emily began to say and even without further explanation, William excitedly responded. “Of course Mrs. Turner. What can I help your friend with?” Before raising her phone closer to Carolyn, Emily explained the situation. She advised her lawyer to look into Jay R’s family before handing the phone over to Carolyn to allow her to ask any questions that might have been lingering in her mind.
