The Inherent Queerness of Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I don’t think it’s any secret that Buffy is extremely popular among LGBTQ people. I couldn’t find any demographic statistics to back this up, but I feel it’s pretty self-evident. Just from having been in the fandom for over a decade, it has always felt like a more queer-dominated space than many other fandoms. Two of the biggest Buffy podcasts out there are helmed by two queer women and a gay man respectively. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that you, reading this right now, are some manner of queer, and I bet I’d be right at least half the time. And I think this is for good reason. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is, at its core, an intensely queer show.

People far too often write off Jo just as Dean's failed love interest, they write off their relationship as unnecessary hetero romance that came out of nowhere. But their dynamic is far more complex and interesting than this. Jo and Dean are so similar that sometimes they fight with each other like a dog barking at its own reflection. Both of them have worshipped their father, both of them tried to make themselves their fathers, both of them are heroes who can't just sit in one place knowing that somewhere the monsters are killing people right now, both pretend to be stronger than they are. The main difference is the way they were raised. Dean wants/needs to have a parent who would protect him from hunting, who would be so worried about his safety that they would stop him from endlessly sacrificing himself. Jo wants to prove herself, she doesn't want to be coddled and protected. She wants freedom, and she's ready to pay for it. So basically Jo desperately wants what Dean has, and Dean wants what Jo has. Both of them cannot comprehend how the other doesn't value the things they want so much. It messes with their heads, it makes them strangely attracted to each other, but at the same time, they feel ultimately incompatible. They don't understand what they want to do to each other. To have sex? It must be it, because Jo sees Dean hunting and it makes her heart beat faster, because Dean sees Jo serving tables in the Roadhouse and it makes him to stay forever. Maybe they want to be each other's family? Yeah, maybe. Because Jo wants to be Dean's sister, and ride in the Impala, and kill monsters. Because Dean wants to be Jo's brother, and be protected and cared by Ellen. Or do they want to kill each other? Because in Jo's eyes, Dean is one more barrier on her path to hunting, he wants to control her, he wants to take away her dream. Because in Dean's eyes, Jo is an annoying naive brat who doesn't know how good she has it.

Of course, the correct answer is that Dean wants have Jo's life, and Jo wants to have Dean's. This dynamic is so juicy and complex, I can't bear it when people write it off as just a stupid romance plot.
