Claudia and Callum.

A piece I made last year for @onceuponzine a Miraculous Ladybug SFW charity fanzine featuring fairytales, legends, myths, and folklore. Leftovers Sales open June 01, 2023! "Romance of the Western Chamber" is a classic Chinese play written by the dramatist Wang Shifu in the Yuan dynasty.

The story is set during the Tang Dynasty. It follows a young couple- Zhang Sheng, a young scholar, and Cui Yingying, the daughter of a chief minister of the Tang court- and their secret affair in a Buddhist monastery.

I don't think I've ever made a piece that's required this amount of research on my part. Of course all accuracy went down the drain when I had to take some artistic liberties when it came down to their bangs and Luka's dyed hair orz

It feels like some of the pacing issues could have been resolved if s4 didn’t insist on keeping all of Team Zym together.

If Ezran had actually stayed in Katolis (because, let’s face it, it doesn’t actually make sense for him to leave), that would actually have given Ez something to do this season. Then that would actually make the Janaya plot relevant to the story, since there would be a way to connect the political tensions Ezran is dealing with to what Janai is doing.

From there, the rest of the characters fall into place: since Ezran stays in Katolis, he volunteers Callum to go and work with Zubeia in finding out more about Aaravos. Since Callum is still angry, Rayla hesitates and decides to stay with Ez. Soren chose to fly with Callum in the canon timeline, so here he would choose to go with Callum as well.

And so instead of having one big “Callum and Friends” adventure with little to no character development, you have two subplots where everyone gets a character arc. Ez deals with issues between Katolis and Xadia/Human Kingdoms, Rayla deals with elven prejudices from humans, Callum works through his possession and uncovering Aaravos’ location, and Soren tries to balance stopping Claudia with trying to save Claudia.
