Sensing the slight discomfort from Katie, Kenzie let the subject drop for the time being. She had said her piece about it, making sure that Katie knew she credited her with a lot of the efforts on the day, and that was all she could do. Whether Katie took the credit or not was on her. “Mm, do try to avoid getting terribly hurt, yeah? It’d be a shame to watch the games if you’re not playing,” Kenzie replied, her lips curling to a softer smile. She did catch a lot of the games, just from a sheer love of the sport, but seeing Katie in them didn’t hurt at all. Besides, she could only imagine what a big deal it would be for the other woman to be a part of a big tournament like the Olympics or World Cup. With a chuckle, Kenzie nodded, patting at the back of the vehicle. “Perfect. Should be a perfectly smooth ride, in that case.” Kenzie wouldn’t imagine having to toss Katie back there at any point, she had a feeling they could get along plenty for a few hours drive. With the supplies out there, Kenzie hopped to the back of the truck, helping organize everything back in there as she spoke with Katie. “Oh, I follow a lot of professors and like…archaeology news type things. As lame as that sounds. You. Beyonce. Depends on the day.”

“Oh it’d still be worth it,” Katie said with a snort, “World Cup is always worth watching, even if my dumbass manages to get hurt.” Still though, the words warmed her heart. She knew Kenzie wasn’t watching for her, that would be silly, but the fact that she looked for her was nice. “Good deal though. I’ll try my best not to let a house fall on me.” It would be worth it, but Katie would kick herself forever if she missed this opportunity. “It’ll be good. France, I mean. I feel...I feel ready, I think. It’ll be so cool to start in a big game like that.” She’d been consistently starting for a while now, so she was looking forward to the World Cups and Olympics she’d get to play in. “I mean, slightly lame,” Katie agreed with a grin, “But I get it. Good to stay informed." Plus, Kenzie seemed the type to genuinely enjoy listening to lectures in a way that Katie most assuredly did not. “Did you just...” Katie began before laughing, “You just lumped me in with Beyonce, and I can honestly say that that’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever done, probably.” She was teasing, mostly, but honestly.

Tyler: Wtf? Dates? Do you go on dates with her or is it just trashy airport sex?

Tyler: Because yeah, not cool. It's fine, tho. We'll go kick her ass. I've been practicing kind of, so I'm ready for this.

Tyler: Just say the word and I'll go fuck her shit up. But for real, make better choices. Date people that don't suck.

Katie: Please. No. She's never exposed ANY interest in taking me out. Just banging me.

Katie: I'm literally the side bitch to a non-relationship. Ugh no though, don't kick her ass. It's not her fault. It's not serious.

Katie: It's my fault for not digging more and letting myself get taken advantage of. Hah, or I could just not date at all. That seems like a better idea.

“I’m not sure would people even be able to handle it”, he chuckled. Luckily it looked like people wouldn’t have to deal with internet-less life since all the signs showed they were only going forward with technology. ”I wasn’t huge beach lover as a kid either, but guess something happened as I grew up and instead of being a bit ‘meh’ about beaches I ended up loving them. Just like how I hated cauliflower when I was a kid and now I actually really like it.” There were multiple other foods as well that Julius had disliked when he was younger, but ended up really liking as he got older. Humans were interesting things for sure. Julius started to laugh at the question. “I could say.. hmm.. if I’d have a pet my phone would be full of pet pics. But since I don’t have a pet..” he grinned. He had a lot of sunrise pictures and pictures of nature in general. Maybe he should get an actual camera and start taking photos with that instead of filling his phone with pictures. “IHOP it is then!”

“I honestly don’t know,” Katie laughed, “I like to think so? I mean, we did alright without it all those years ago.” She had faith in humanity, though she probably shouldn’t have. “Oh no,” she groaned, making a face, “Cauliflower? I’m afraid we can’t be friends.” She let loose a long, shuddering sigh, placing her hand over her heart. “It was nice knowing you, really,” she teased, shooting him a wink. “Nah though, just as long as you don’t make me eat the stuff, we’re good.” She wrinkled her nose, making a face. “No thank you on cauliflower. Or broccoli for that matter. I’m more a carrot type of girl.” Nodding her agreement, Katie had to say she understood the sentiment. “I get that. My phone is full of pictures of my kid.” She paused, brows pulling together in a frown. She really needed to watch herself, that slip up was happening more and more often. “My friend’s niece, rather. We live together and Beck lives with us too. She’s not mine though.” It just...felt like it a lot of the time. “But if I didn’t have that I think most of it would be sunrise and like...pretty pictures. Just pictures of pretty things.” Katie was a simple girl. With a grin, Katie surged onto her tiptoes, laughing as she led the way to the restaurant.

“I disagree. You had everything to do with it. Wouldn’t be here if you hadn’t tweeted about it,” Kenzie pointed out. She did a lot of charity work on her own time, but this was one she probably would have passed by if it weren’t for Katie. “Fair enough, though. You do have to be ready to kick ass come next year, after all. I’m sure you’ll be able to get a lot done with what time you have, though, at least.” Certainly, if nothing else, the supplies would make a huge difference in the efforts over there, providing comfort and aid to those in need. Chuckling a little, Kenzie lifted her shoulders in a soft shrug, her head shaking just a tad. “Nah, not a chance. And you know, even if I do get sick of you, I can just toss you in the back of the truck and keep going. We’ll make it just fine,” she teased. She doubted entirely that it would happen, she enjoyed Katie’s company immensely. “Mm, well, I follow you anyway. I don’t check it all that often, I’ll be honest, but I scroll through now and again when I have a free moment. I like to keep tabs on certain people.” Her head lifted when she saw the carts of supplies being brought out from the store and she gestured them over, directing them to start loading things up into the truck for them.

She really didn’t have a comeback for that one, even though she tried to discount her own achievement. Her mouth opened, her brow furrowed and her cheeks turned a little pink before she shut her mouth again. “Okay. I guess that’s true,” she said, shifting a little uncomfortably under the minor praise. “We’ll see. I’d rather not do something stupid and hurt myself before France, but knowing me, I’ll manage. Worth it though.” She nodded firmly, eyes moving to the back of her borrowed Jeep. “I genuinely think this is more important than the World Cup, and I never thought I’d hear myself say that.” This was her home though, fuck her job. “I mean, fair,” she laughed, eyeing the bed, “It’s not illegal to ride back there in Florida anyway, fuck it. I can do that. I used to do that a ton as a kid, actually.” She’d biked and walked most places, but she’d gotten tossed in the back of her friends’ trucks on more than one occasion. “Certain people?” she laughed, “Like who?” She assumed she was one of them if Kenzie followed her, but she didn’t know for sure. She wondered what constituted a follow. She moved to help though, as the supplies came out, but she still kept most of her attention on Kenzie.

Tyler: But, yeah I got you. Tequila on the way. And someone will come get Beckett. I hit the group chat for the Pride, so. Who knows who it'll be.

Katie: God, amazing, thank you. I just...god. I'm freaking out.

Katie: Uh, I'm fucking Kenzie Drake's bitch apparently. I was talking to this girl Keely? She owns Author's Attic, really nice girl. She goes on dates with Kenzie, Tyler. DATES.

Katie: What is it with me and liking women who somehow find someone more attractive and interesting than me, GOD.

Katie: Like, I knew it wasn't serious, but I didn't expect to be the fucking second best trashy hookup and potentially be other woman and that TERRIFIES me. I don't want to ruin this girl's month.

Keely: Yeah I did. And its why I wanted to open a bookstore in the first place. To remind everyone that reading is fun and to maybe just for a little while, step away from their phones and remember why they started reading in the first place. That sense of adventure when you immerse yourself in the pages... its unlike anything. And that is why I'm literally the biggest nerd in the world.

Keely: You seem alright to me, Katie. You're insanely attractive and anyone would be lucky to have you. And if you need a wingwoman next time you go out, I'm your girl. I'm a great narrator and can make you look so good ;)

Keely: I mean, we've gone on a few dates but nothing exclusive, you know? We both just wanted something casual and fun and so did she. But ugh, I didn't expect to actually start liking her. I'm not sure if I want her to know. She seems fairly content with us just being friends so I'm doing whatever she wants.

Katie: It seems like you're doing really well. I've heard a couple people talk about Author's Attic, so it seems like a pretty popular place. Do you think you want to open up more businesses? Or are you super focused on just the one? But pfft, nerds are great.

Katie: Hah, I think I might need a good narrator in this case. I am...not good with girls. I can talk to them, that's fine, but most of the times they just end up being my friends, which is fun too but...you know. Thank you though. For the compliment.

Katie: That's fair. I don't know though, sitting on feelings like that isn't...the best. It sucks, and it might come out eventually. Maybe give it another month or something, would be my advice. If things are still going good and the dates are as elaborate and fun as ever...I don't know. Might be worth bringing something up.

Keely: Well I mean, it certainly restored my faith in humanity. Mom thought I was crazy when I told her I wanted to open a bookstore because there are apps out there now that do the same thing so its definitely nice knowing that people still like to hold books, and not just phones, in their hands.

Keely: Oh don't tell me that, I'm going to have to find you someone to take you out now. I'm not sure if I'm worth living through though, I'm quite boring. Kenzie is the one making the dates worth it. She's incredible and super pretty and ugh, my crush is showing isn't it?

Katie: No, one hundred percent. Looks like you proved Mom wrong though, huh? My mom kind of thought I was crazy for pursuing soccer too, but...also she knew it was a way out of P'cola. So she was behind me. For real though, just...there's something special about books. I'm not a big reader, but even I know that.

Katie: Oh lord, good luck. I've forgotten how to date and I'm also the worst lmaoooo. Pfft, you're dating though, that's more exciting than my life. Oh, you and Kenzie are dating? No, it's...I mean, yeah, it's showing a little lol. But that's alright. Kenzie's great, so I get it, I really do.

Keely: Yeah its definitely a good swamped. I've been giving flood victims and victims of the hurricane free books and I've had to replinish my stock but you know, it was worth it. Now the word is out and hopefully business will pick up

Keely: Sounds good babe. Just stop by whenever you desire, I'll be there. And it was. I went out on her boat and got to really know her and she's even more amazing than I already knew her to be.

Katie: I'm sure it will. People like to support businesses that give back to the community. You've got a new customer in me, at least, for whatever that's worth! That's so awesome though, Keely, thank you. I know everyone down in the effected areas appreciates it.

Katie: Oh how cool! I haven't been on a date in like. Eighty-four years, probably, so I'll have to live vicariously through you. No though, I'm glad. It sounds like she may be something special, huh?

Keely: I don't like to do it though. If only because I hate being left on read. I've just been swamped at work and I barely have time to think.

Keely: As sad as the hurricane was, its done wonders for my business... but yes, anything you want, its yours. Just come over whenever you want next week. I'm going on a date tonight and won't be in tomorrow.

Katie: I get that, but it's so not a problem. I've been busy myself, so I get that feeling. Hopefully good swamped though.

Katie: Next week is good for me! I should be back by then. But hey, dates are fun! Hope you have a good time!

“Well, hey, you did a good job. I mean, you got people out here, the Jeep is filling up, we’ll have this big ole monster filled, so…you did good,” Kenzie shrugged. The fact that she had done anything at all meant a lot, Kenzie felt, considering how minimally most people even tried to step up and make a difference with things like this. “Of course, though. I’m sure there’s a lot that needs to be done, so you’ll have plenty of time to put some work in.” Hopefully it would help make some notable difference for the people that needed it. Kenzie didn’t see any way that it couldn’t, ultimately. Giving a quick nod as Katie stepped away, Kenzie leaned back against the door of the truck, getting comfortable as she waited. Her eyebrow lifted slightly as Katie returned, a half smile tugging at one side of her lip at the response. “You’re on. Cab has plenty of room for an extra body. You sure you can put up with me for that long of a drive, though? And of course I do. Why wouldn’t I follow you?”

“Well the truck is all you,” she laughed, shaking her head, “I didn’t have anything to do with that.” The fact that Kenzie was only doing it for her though wasn’t lost on Katie. With a sigh, Katie shook her head. “Not that much time, I’m afraid. National duty will call me back before long but...hopefully the supplies will help. And I can assist in some cleanup, maybe. If Dawn doesn’t call me and yell at me enough that I panic. Which is entirely possible.” Dawn was scary when she wanted to be. “I’ve put up with you this long, a six and a half hour drive isn’t anything,” she teased. Katie had no doubt they’d be fine though, Kenzie didn’t have a jarring personality. “Me, however, you might get sick of after about hour three.” Shrugging sheepishly, Katie bit the inside of her cheek. “I don’t know. My twitter is like...terrible puns. Me shit talking Hinkle. And me making fun of Tyler. That, plus soccer. It’s not really everyone’s cup of tea.” It didn’t fit the vibe Kenzie had, at least in Katie’s mind. That, plus she was actively trying to emotionally distance herself, currently. It was easier if she just told herself Kenzie wasn’t interested in the dumber parts of her life.

Julius laughed and nodded his head in agreement. It was sort of a good thing to hear others had extremely random information stocked in their heads. “I’m rather sure nowadays people wouldn’t be able to leave google behind anymore. Especially the younger folk.” Julius was sure at some point people forget places like libraries even exist because they can just google everything. “Especially the beach at the silent hours is the best. You can just sit there all alone and get lost in your thoughts. But I won’t fight you about the sunrise, because I get to see sunrise probably more often than others do and it never stops being a beautiful one.” Julius actually took a short break every time the sun was rising and the tallest buildings started to turn pink and orange. It never made him be late from doing his work, besides, it was just few minutes and no one even noticed if he took a break of two or three minutes. “Pancakes sounds heavenly right now. A lot of coffee and piles of pancakes. Yes.”

“Oh, without a doubt,” Katie said with a snort, “I know I wouldn’t. I think people would adapt, ultimately, but man. It’d be a long, harsh adjustment period.” She vaguely remembered learning about the dewey decimal system in school, but Katie couldn’t recall the specifics. With a small, soft smile, Katie nodded her head. “Yeah...the beach is pretty great. I grew up actually in Pensacola, which is really close to the beach. I wasn’t a huge beach kid though. I only really started appreciating it when I got older.” Maybe one day she’d take Julius’s words to heart and take a trip down to the beach really early in the morning. “Okay, be honest,” she chuckled, “How many sunrise pics do you have on your phone though?” Groaning, Katie nodded her head, nearly drooling at the image in her mind. “I’m into it. Maybe we’ll hit up IHOP. They’ve got the best pancakes.”

The gesture, though hardly a burden at all on Kenzie, did mean a lot, she genuinely did hope she was helping make a difference, so she had no trouble accepting the thank you, wrapping her arms around Katie in a returned hug. “It’s no problem, seriously. No need to stress out, you’re not doing it all alone.” Katie had started the process and gotten the ball rolling, though, and that was really what was making the difference there today. Without someone making the first move, it was hard to imagine that anyone in the area would have done much at all to help out with the relief efforts. “I think that’s a big part of it, though. Not being right there with it makes it seem a lot worse than it really probably is. Yes, it’s terrible, but…being over there will probably help set your mind more at ease.” At least when you’re there you aren’t picturing the worst and can just focus on what it will take to rebuild. “But, yeah, jeep first and then the truck makes sense to me. That way you can take off sooner, I suppose?” Kenzie shrugged, figuring Katie would want to get on the road as quickly as she could. “Mm, well, you asked for help?”

“I know I’m not,” Katie said, though the sudden rush of breath kind of spoke otherwise. “It just kind of feels like it. It’s genuinely difficult to organize something like this. Especially since I’m not like...JJ Watt, for example.” His name brought a wrinkle of distaste to Katie’s expression, but she soldiered on. “I don’t have that level of fame at all, so trying to get people to care was kind of...difficult.” That, and being told she was ripping people off was stressful too. “Yeah, I think so,” Katie agreed with a nod of her head. “Just being able to help in an actual feasible way is going to be...good, I think. Money is one thing, but being out there and cleaning up stuff I think it’s a little more rewarding.” She shrugged one shoulder, a small smile pulling at the corner of her mouth. Nodding, Katie went to respond before her phone chimed. “Ah -- give me just a second,” Katie said with a smile. After a beat, she came back, tucking it away. “Sorry...that was someone I grew up with. Pensacola’s unharmed, apparently they don’t need...anything,” she said with a snort, “So I might take you up on driving up there with you.” If it was still on the table, anyway. Blinking, Katie took a moment to respond. “Oh! I actually wasn’t aware you followed me on Twitter,” she said with a snort.

“I could never turn down a drink from a gorgeous lady, so fine by me.” Hunter chuckled, liking the woman’s chill attitude, especially after how he had invaded her personal space out of the blue, someone else would have told him to get lost but she simply tagged along so it was Hunter’s kind of person to hang around. “You get used to it, you know, to eat your words.” He chuckled. “I’ve always believed in that, I mostly believe in everything, honestly, and I’m still waiting to meet my doppelganger. Sometimes I think I should probably start travelling, you know, he’s out there somewhere but then I say nah, let him find me, I don’t have enough money to travel around the globe.” He laughed. Taking a sip of his beer, Hunter nodded at Katie’s words, glad that he wasn’t the only one with that kind of thought. “It’s a fucking bummer, really, I could never be with someone like that, like you, said, best friends can be just best friends. Like Harry and Hermione, you know?” Arching his brows at the blonde’s statement, Hunter smiled. “Well, I’m glad my mistake ended up well. I had a rough week, too, kinda, but it’ll get better.” Hunter said, trying to reassure Katie as well as himself while he tried to not think about his recent encounters with his sister.

Shooting him goofy finger guns, Katie clicked her tongue in time with the cocking of her thumbs. “It’s what I’m here for,” she assured him, teasing grin firmly in place. “Oh, I’m intimately familiar with eating my words, don’t you worry,” she said with a bark of laughter, “I’m a dumbass, I eat my words all the time.” She wasn’t all that dumb, but Katie definitely qualified as a jock in every sense of the word. She could own that about herself. “Fucking right though!” she laughed, “Like, nah, maybe your doppleganger is super rich and can toss some of that money your way when he finds you. You believe in a bit of everything though, for real? Like soulmates, karma? All that kinda stuff?” Katie wasn’t sure where she stood. She erred probably more on the no side than anything else. Though, she hoped karma was real. She was due for something good, probably, after all the bad. “Right?” Katie laughed, “Reasons we broke up though. I mean...well. Okay, that’s a lie. Me and her broke up for other reasons, but at least I don’t have to feel guilty hanging out with my friend anymore.” She’d stopped feeling sad about K long ago. “I feel you though. Hopefully she’ll dump his ass and you guys can hang out again.” His words made her start, and Katie frowned. She liked this guy, he was nice, and had the type of vibe she gelled with. She hoped things would work out. “Yeah, I know,” she sighed, “It always does get better but...fucking blows during, right?” She held her glass up in a cheers, small smile on her face.

Glancing up a bit, Kenzie’s smile grew a bit, head shaking. “Nah, you’ll have plenty to fill the truck. I got the order put in ahead, the stuff should be coming out from the store in a minute,” Kenzie admitted with a soft shrug. Things like this were no big deal for her, she tried to pitch in where she could whenever there were major tragedies, especially in the areas she lived. She was fortunate enough to have money to spare, so charity work was something she stayed tied into whenever possible. Living a fairly simple home life herself for the most part, money had never been something she felt any big tie to. ‘But oh, yeah, of course. I’m sure I can find my way there easily enough,” Kenzie nodded, brushing a hand back through her hair. If anything, she could just get one of her other crew members to make the trek instead. “But sure, no problem at all.” Fingers tapping against the truck behind her, Kenzie could finally see the workers coming out with the boxes of supplies, ready to load them up into the truck. “Ah, here we are then.”

Katie sometimes forgot how kind people could be. She should have expected it with Kenzie, she’d been nothing but nice to her, but this was a lot. “Are you serious?” she asked breathlessly, eyes widening. “I just --” Cutting herself off, Katie strode forward, wrapping Kenzie in a tight hug. She’d seen her naked, she was pretty sure a hug was fine. “Thank you,” she sighed, giving her a brief squeeze before letting her go. “I’m sorry, I’m just...I’m a little stressed out,” she said with an uneasy chuckle. “This is kind of a lot, and while I’ve done it before, it’s just...it’s never felt quite like this?” It seemed silly, considering Pensacola had been leveled when Ivan hit, but Katie had been there with Ivan. Now, she was too far away to immediately jump in. “It sounds so stupid, like, I was there thought Ivan. Like, we didn’t even evacuate, but this one is the one flustering me.” Smiling, Katie nodded her head, surging up onto her tiptoes. “Okay...okay, good. Do we wanna just fill the jeep up then start with the truck?” It seemed logical sense her jeep was already half filled, but still. “What made you decide to do all this, anyway?” she asked curiously.
