Blog Prompt #10

I am most proud of this semester on how I approved my writing skills. I feel as if I have gotten much better at getting my thoughts down onto paper. I believe that the free writes we did in class and as well as these blog posts really helped me learn to put everything down on paper and not overthink what I was writing about. I think the one thing I could have improved upon was getting my work done sooner. As the end of the year is here, not only with this class but with every class I am in, I still have a lot of work to do. I will know better next semester to do my work sooner so I am not under a lot of stress.

My next steps are to continue working on my writing abilities. For my major, I have to write a lot of papers and discuss a lot of things between my classmates. This is why I have to keep working on my writing abilities to sound more professional. I will make sure I have good grammar in the future and I will want to make sure all of my papers are proofread before I turn them in.

This class has helped me become more comfortable with writing in all different types of settings and I also feel more comfortable speaking infant of my peers due to the presentations we did in class. This class has not hindered me in anything that I can think of. I think of this class as a positive experience and I think it helped put me in the right direction for my major.

Blog Post #9

I would classify my writing as more “Aesthetic enthusiasm.” I write to have a good rhythm and find beauty in the arrangement of the words.

I would say that my writing is more “pubic centered.” I usually talk as if though there are a lot of people going to read things. Especially for my personal blog posts, I would talk as if though everyone read my post and I was trying to tell a piece of me to them. I also write to try and make things make sense for other people. I feel as if I were to write for myself, then I would have more grammatical errors and I would not care if I spelled things incorrectly. Knowing that I am writing to an audience helps improve my writing drastically.

As Orwell writes that, “All writers are vain, selfish, and lazy, and at the very bottom of their motives there lies a mystery” it got me thinking. It makes sense that writers would write o get things off of their mind, which would be selfish in that case because they are not writing for the amusement of others but to help clear their head. He says that “writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness.” It only makes sense that writers would write for themselves and no one else.

Writing is a long difficult process. We will never know for sure what writers actually go through unless you become one yourself. I have always loved writing, but I do not think I would be able to write a novel some day.

Last Personal Blog Post Reflection

For my final personal blog post I am going to reflect this year as a whole.

When I first came here to Ohio University I was all over the place. I never knew how long it would take to get to my classes, I never knew where my classes actually were, and I didn’t know many people. I loved the campus just as much as I do now and I knew that this was going to be the place I stay for 4 years of my life.

As I sit here now, I think about how my first year here was actually great. I got good grades last semester and I am currently on the track to get good grades this semester as well. Our softball started right when I arrived on campus and I did not really know what to expect. Now that I have been playing this year I think that playing for this team is super fun and I am looking forward to the next three years with this team.

This year is also the year that I met my best friend, Allie. She is fun loving and full of energy. I don't know some days how I would have made it through without her there by my side. She always knows how to make me laugh and is sunshine on a dull day. I am so happy that this school brought me her. The last picture on this post is a picture of us.

I loved my first year here at Ohio and I can’t wait to come back next semester and continue my academic and softball career.

Blog Post 8

I would consider myself a procrastinator. As I am writing this a few days early I am thinking, “maybe I am a planner” but I know deep down that I am being forced to complete all of my homework by my softball coaches during study hall. If I did not have study hall I would be doing this the night before it as due. I would like to say my brain is more dominated by the rational thinker, where I know when things are due and I know when the last possible second I can start it is. I don't usually do other things that were said in the article, I will usually just go to bed or watch Netflix. I guess that would put me in the category of the instant gratification monkey. I usually don't think that I am procrastinating when I do it though.

As I read about the Dark Playground and the Panic Monster, I really relate to what they are talking about. I am the person that will know that I have to do something but sit in guilt when I don't do it. I also have the panic monster some and scare me into getting my work done. Usually this is how it happens. I wait until the last second where I know I can still get a good nights sleep but still get my work done very quickly. It works well for me right now so Wont be changing any time soon.

I think that it has been totally fine now in college. I can usually write something better if I have a big deadline. I am more focused if I know I need to get it done within a few hours. If I know that I have a week to do it, I will sit there and get nothing done while staring at it. I think it is possible for me to improve and no longer procrastinate but I do not think I am going to. I could change my ways but I am happy with what I am doing now.

(How To) Hit a Fastball

As you may know I play softball here at Ohio University. I am making this blog today to tell you how to hit a fastball down the middle.

To start you have to know how to stand in the batters box. You first will line up your left foot with the front of the plate. You need to make sure you are not too close or too far away from the plate. Make sure when you are standing your feet should be in line with your shoulders.

When starting your swing you need to make sure that both of your hands are on the bat and do not leave the bat during your swing. You need to make sure your “knocking knuckles” are lined up so you do not roll your wrists over when swinging.

When the pitch is coming down the middle you have to make sure you stay tall and throw the knob of the bat towards the ball. This will help when trying to hit the middle of the ball on your bat.

When finishing you swing you have to make sure that you finish over your shoulder so you do not hit the ball into the ground. All you have to do then is swing hard and let the ball fly.

Currently, as a Freshman in college I do not have any strategies for reading. This is mainly because I do not read articles or books that are particularly hard yet. My classes I am in are not very difficult and they do not require extensive reading of difficult material. In the past, when I have attempted to read something of more difficulty I run into some hardships. I find it very difficult for me to stay invested in reading something that I do not care about. If it was for a class that I did not like, I had no motivation to read the long article that correlated with the class. This can be very difficult but after reading, “Reading Games,” I learned new ways of tackling those difficult reads. The author talks about “joining/entering the conversation,” which really means that reading is not a one way street. You should be having a conversation with what you are reading. This might sound strange, but it is the reader’s job to find out what their role is in the reading and fully take in what is being said. I think that these strategies throughout the text will help me in the future with reading bigger articles. I am really going to tap into the idea that I am involved in the conversation of the author by taking notes and asking myself questions about what I am reading. I am going to put these ideas into practice in the future when trying to understand a difficult reading.

5 Things You Might Not Know About a College Athlete (Listicle)

As some of you may know, I play softball here at Ohio University. I thought I would give you 5 things you might not know about being a college athlete.

1. We have more down time than you might think.

When you first think of the typical college athlete, many of them lead you to believe that they have no time to themselves and they have no life outside of their sport. They are wrong. The NCAA legally requires coaches you give athletes a certain amount of time away from practices and meetings. Now, Im not saying that it isn't hard, because it is. I am saying that there is more downtime than you would think.

2. We are super close

Now I'm not speaking for every team because every team is different, but our team in particular is very close. This can be good or bad depending on the day. We have to spend every single day together, which can bond people for life. Even on the days that we do not have to spend together, you can find the majority of the team together doing something not related to our sport.

3. We travel....A Lot

I never knew how much a team could actually travel until I joined this one. I have never traveled so much in my life. I have played travel ball for years and I have never been on the road this much in a season. We usually get back on a Sunday night and leave again on a Wednesday or Thursday afternoon. This does not give us much time to relax at home.

4. We have to have a certain GPA

Being an athlete you are held to high standards. Our team has a set GPA goal every year, and all athletes are expected to meet this GPA. If our team GPA is not met, we are required to have team study hall once a week for the following semester. This can lead to girls being frustrated when they meet the goal and others do not. But overall, it is what is best for the team.

5. We are a family

Many people have been on sports teams, and probably know how close a team can get. I have never been on a team where I thought of the girls to be my actual family. Now that I have joined this team, I know what its like to see your team as your family. These girls will do anything for you at the drop of a hat and not think twice about it. I have never met so many people who had my best interest at heart. I will forever cherish these moments with my family.

Review of the TV show, FRIENDS

Hello everyone!

I have just finished watching the hit TV series FRIENDS today. This made me want to do a blog post on it and write a little review of what I thought.

First, I loved it. This show kept me laughing the entire time I watched it. They always kept me wanting more and more when watching it. I felt as if I was connected to the characters and I felt as if I was really friends with them. The show was so welcoming and uplifting, it always kept me in a good mood.

Second, the characters for the show were just perfect. These 6 friends are literally perfect. They have every person a group would need. The way they are all so different helped move the show along and keep the story lines interesting.

I was very sad when I finished watching it and I wish that they had made more episodes. I will forever be one of those people who wished they had a friends reunion show that I would watch. My only complaint for the show is that it had to end. I wish I knew more about how their lives turned out and how everyone was doing now. This is where the reunion show would come in handy.

I really recommend this show to anyone that wants to feel happy the entire time while watching it. This show is so amazing and the way the characters are so close makes you feel so great inside. Overall, I rate this show a 10/10 all day long. Great show to watch.

Blog Post 6

I personally think that what makes a presentation good is how well the speaker knows the material. When someone goes up to give a presentation and does not know the material you can tell right away by seeing them staring that the slides or reading straight from their notecards. When they know the material they are looking at the audience and more calm when speaking on the material. As I said earlier when someone doesn’t know the material this will make the presentation bad. This means that when they are giving the presentation, they will be reading straight from their notecards and/or reading off of the presentation they put on the screen. When they are not making eye contact with the audience, and seem extremely nervous, this is what makes the presentation hard to watch. I usually prepare for public speaking presentations by rehearsing what I want to talk about. I will go over the material in depth so I am very knowledgeable on the subject, and I will also practice in front of my friends to get their opinions on my presentation. I do not have any anxieties while writing or thinking about my presentation, but right when it come up to my turn to speak I will be very nervous. Up until that day, I am very calm and do not think about how nervous I will be. When it come down to it, my heart starts to race and sometimes I even blanked what I am supposed to say. Memes are all over the internet. I cannot get on a social media site today and not see a meme on my feed. These memes make things that might not be funny humorous and adds light to the dark. The benefits of memes are the fact that it makes people laugh. These memes make people laugh which helps with all the bad things going on in the world. The limitations of memes are the fact that with this humor, people might not take things very seriously. This causes people to overlook the real issue and laugh at the joke that has been made. Memes change the Wayne communicate. Memes usually are very sarcastic and make jokes out of serious things. This changes the way we communicate because it is using a picture and text to communicate how you feel rather than actually saying it. I think that memes have power but some are just for fun as well. The memes that have power share a strong message and travel all over the world. This gets people thinking about the issue even if they are laughing at it. Some memes are mean’t just for a laugh though and many people to not look very far into it. Overall, I love memes. These help brighten my day when I see them. Below, is a meme that makes me laugh.

Blog Post #4

Media literacy is the ability to use media well, understand it, evaluate it, and create it. I would consider myself literate in media. I consider myself literate in media because I know how to use it well, and I know how to figure out what is real and what is fake. It is important for students to think like fact checkers because there is so much fake news all over the internet. There are so many people who spread news around without even checking the credibility of it. The problem with fake news is that it gets people thinking a certain way about something that is not necessarily true. People get their emotions in the way of finding out what is true and we shouldn't do that. When we see something that triggers our emotions we let it fog our vision and make us share it quickly because of our emotion. Once people can not let their emotions get in the way and check if a source is credible, we will be way better off.

Blog Post of my Choosing #1 Playing D1 Softball

I am going to explain one typical day I have here at Ohio University. As some of you might already know, I play softball here for OU. It is pretty difficult, but at the same time it is already one of the best experiences of my life.

The typical day starts out at 5:00am when my alarm goes off. Its time for weight lifting. We have to be at weights by 5:45am so we can get a jumpstart on our 6am lift. We normally lift for about an hour. This leaves me done with weights around 7-7:10am.

After weights, I have to go to study tables. Study tables is mandatory for all Freshman athletes. This is where I have to sign into a computer system for at least 8 hours a week. This is usually when I get all of my homework done so I can get to bed early that night.

After this, I usually have some classes I have to attend. It depends on the day, but lets say I get done with class around 12pm. This gives me about an hour and a half to eat lunch/get something down that I need to. After that time is up, I have to head on out to practice.

We usually practice for about 2 and a half, to 3 hours a day. This includes hitting, fielding, base running, and anything else you can think of. The practices are tough and usually by the time they are done, I am ready for bed.

After practice I usually eat dinner, shower, and lay in my bed after a tough day. We get 2 off days in a 7 day period so those days are usually filled with lots of sleeping.

Thats the typical day in my life. I wouldn't change it though! It has already helped me make so many new life-long friends. Softball will forever be a huge part in my life.

After reading Anne Lamott’s, “Shitty First Drafts,” I would describe my writing process as lacking in revisions. I tend to write things for classes and not make drafts and submit the first thing I type up. After reading this, I know that if I want to do better, all I have to do is revise and not submit the first thing I type up. I would categorize myself as a procrastinator as in I usually do things the day before they are due or maybe even the day that they are due. This usually doesn’t give me much time to review and revise my work. I don't have any anxieties about writing and I think I procrastinate because of this. I usually can write up a paper pretty quickly so I wait until I have to write it. On occasion I will use a pre-writing strategy where I write all of my thoughts down before I start typing so I don't forget anything, but if I am down to the last second in writing the paper I will just type. I think in order to be successful in this course, I should make sure that I revise and review everything I write. I need to not wait until the last second to type something up so I can make it the best I possibly can. Overall, the reading made sense to me and I know that in the future, I should really try to review and revise my papers, and try to get the first draft out of the way so I can turn in my best paper.

Malcolm X did not learn to read like normal people. Instead of starting an early age and going throughout all years of school, he started his journey to learning how to read and understand words when he was in prison. The argument that this piece is making is that you can be a well educated individual even though you didn't attend a fancy college or college at all. He is very intelligent and people assume he went to a university when he did not, he only read books. The purpose of this piece is to inform people that it is never too late to start learning. He started late in life and has learned so much because he just put his mind to it. It seems as if his intended audience are people in general. He talks about learning about his ancestors pasts so he could be trying to communicate with his community. The Alexie post and this post connect because they both had to overcome obstacles to become the intelligent men they are today. They were expected to be failures one because of being Indian, and another because of being African American in prison. My overall reaction to this post is that the prison system really helped this man find his full potential. Without prison, this man would have probably never picked up a book or tried to read and I think that it is really wonderful that he was able to find something that helped him get through prison and become a better, more intelligent man.

Hello! My name is Katie Yun and I am from North Canton, Ohio. I am a freshman at Ohio this year. I am very interested in softball. I have been playing softball since I was a little girl and I am a member of the softball team here at OU. In the past, I have always loved my English classes. I have had some of the best teachers who helped love what they were teaching. This has always been my favorite subject throughout school. I have no taken any other college level English classes but I was in Honors English in high school. My strengths would be when I am interested in what we are doing and what we are writing about, I can write for hours. When something doesn't interest me as much though, I find it difficult to find things to write about. I really like learning about different stories or writing on ideas that interest me. I would say I don't like when we discuss things that might be boring. For this class, I expect to become a better writer, and to learn more as I go. The goal I have for this class is to get a good grade and write my papers and do my work to the best of my ability.
