Recently on FB I read some comments by a Black man on bell hooks that were very very negative, disparaging and offensive, he called her writing toxic man hating, destruction for the Black community. His views seemed so extreme and angry. He said he didn’t believe in rape culture or the wage gap. He had a lot of hatred for Black Feminist Thought/Theory. I was going to do that thing were I replied to his comments and then decided not to get sucked into a weird back and forth with a stranger online. I decided to do this instead.

For those interested in knowing about this prolific writer/professor/culture critic and her cannon of work which includes detailed analysis on race, gender, class - deconstructing what she refers to as the racist heteronormative capitalist patriarchy in a way that is accessible and clear, for me has been a case of - iron sharpening iron, she is not a cult leader in my eyes, she offers a sharpening of my mind and I appreciate it.

ALL ABOUT LOVE is my absolute fave.

How I study for finals

The most important step, PLAN PLAN AND PLAN!

This includes both a bigger plan for how you’re gonna cover the syllabus and a smaller day to day plan, for example if I have one month’s worth of classes in a final, I’ll usually do 5-7 day’s worth in one day. And I start out by the things I know very least. What I find most useful is downloading a calendar and filling it in this is an example of my brutal internal medicine schedule

As you can see, I don’t go by the order of the class schedule, instead I divide topics depending on what I already know most about and plan accordingly, taking both order and workload into consideration (obviously the things in lilac above would take a fraction of time compared to the things in yellow for example) and when it comes to reviewing, I go through the yellow stuff first. A crucial thing I do is that I leave at least 2-3 days empty because we all know schedules don’t always go as planned. And obviously this isn’t my entire IM syllabus, I already finished cardiopulmonology and other branches so I didn’t include them.

As for the actual day plan, I find that studying for the entire day can be extremely tough for me and wears me out like crazy, I only do one study session in the morning, spend 3-5 hours hanging out with people or playing sims, whatever I want basically, do practice questions for 2 more hours (relevant to that study session of course) and chill out for the rest of the night.

Moral of the story, pulling an all day study session/cramming=early burn out. You don’t want that so literally plan every part of your day, this is a crucial time.

I always say this but it’s so important, passive reading is NOT ENOUGH DO SOME PRACTICE TESTS/MCQs or whatever you can. Like I said, I do practice questions for things I’ve went over every single night during finals and that honestly imo is waaaay more important than just reading the stuff over and over. An important thing to mention here is to NOT GET DISCOURAGED when you get stuff wrong, that’s actually something you learned and you won’t make that same mistake again so .. it’s all good, you’re making progress.

That’s the main part of how I actually study, below are some of my tips that I stick to by heart.

Use the same source you learned from during the year this is crucial for your memory, do not *spontaneously* decide to use a different textbook or source just before your finals, whatever you studied from HAS TO BE what you revise from.

All nighters won’t do you any good Obviously your brain needs to sleep in order to consolidate information so just make sure you get enough sleep, some people study better at night and they get plenty of sleep during the day, not the ideal situation for your circadian rhythm or hormones but if it works for you, do it (it’s finals, we’re all practically dead anyways) .. yeah just make sure you get some sleep in. And trust me when I say no matter how much you think you can cram and get in during those hours you’ll be sleeping, sleep is so much more important than that, I know it’s tempting but GO TO BED.

Now is not the ideal time to eat absolute garbage food because you’ll feel like shit and (if you’re anything like me) won’t get anything done …so just eat the best way you can and I’m not gonna be one of those people who tell you to work out because I can’t bring myself to do it during finals, it’s just too much for my lazy ass .. but I do stretch every now and then and my “breaks” usually consist of me going on a walk or something. So just do little things that can make you feel good but don’t freak out if you can’t exercise or get 2 hours in at the gym, just keep a healthy balance. I have no idea if there’s any scientific background to this but I (think) honestly believe that almonds help with my memory?

Know that it’s honestly okay to stop when you’ve had enough and that everything eventually ends and that a bunch of numbers (your grade) DOES NOT DEFINE YOU. So what if you lose a few marks? So what if you don’t get this and this right? Even if you fail, what the fuck is wrong with that? You’ll learn from your mistakes and do better. The fact that you’re trying to better yourself and trying to learn new study techniques is enough, you should be proud of yourself regardless of the outcome.

During my first month with my therapist, I was given this worksheet to read and work on. She noticed that while I was talking with her, that my thoughts followed a lot of these. I wasn’t aware that my anxiety had brought me down paths of low self-worth and stinky thinking.  After a couple of weeks of talking with her, she gave me this worksheet to work on. 

While, at first, I thought these weren’t going to work out, I was very surprised to see just how easy they were to use . My homework at that time was to identify which sort of thinking I used on the regular and which ones would best challenge them for me. So, what do you think? Reblogging for later reference after I tried it earlier today to try to calm down. It actually does help a lot, not just for sleep but if you have problems with anxiety.

My default mental setting is “vibrating intensely in the background.” After doing this, I felt noticeably calm and relaxed - I wasn’t as fixated on my breathing, I wasn’t tense, my movements weren’t jerky and I didn’t feel like I had to be as tense as possible to be under control. 10/10 would recommend.

Shaving 101: ultimate guide for extra sensitive skin.

Ladies gather up. For years I’ve suffered from ultra sensitive skin especially around my bikini area and inner thighs. I know a lot of you deal with the same problems so I’m making a very extensive post about NATURAL and SKIN FRIENDLY ways to combat these issues as well as share my personal shaving routine.

Firstly let me clear this up: DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, PUT ALCOHOL OR DEODORANT ON THESE SENSITIVE AREAS.

I’ve seen many posts online about girls that use alcohol as a toner, or apply cream deodorant and Nivea aftershave balm to prevent razor bumps. While these products will help alleviate the symptoms they will harm your skin in the long run. So stay away!

In my experience there are two types of problems:

Immediate: these appear during or directly after shaving. (Pain during shaving, cuts, irritation)

Post shave: these appear hours or days after shaving (irritation, bumps, ingrown hairs)

So let’s take it from the start.

Baths and soaks: now this is not a totally necessary step but soaking in warm water prior to shaving will help soften both the skin and the hair and provide a more pleasant experience.

Avoid using any body wash or bubble bath as it will disturb your ph levels and is especially unhealthy for your vagina. Prefer ingredients like salts(detoxifies, provides minerals), baking soda(detoxifies), apple cider vinegar (balances ph), herbs & teas (soften skin, smooth, hydrate, calm and so on), milk (hydrates skin, mildly exfoliates, softens), honey (hydrates, softens)

Exfoliation: this is an essential step if you suffer from ingrown hair and additionally helps give a closer shave.

You have a few different options. You can either use a glove/loofah/mitt/sponge or a scrub

Again avoid commercial scrubs as the chemicals in them are extremely unnecessary and unhealthy for your skin. Invest in a quality natural product or create your own with ingredients you already have in your kitchen in the fraction of the time and cost.

A simple scrub recipe I enjoy:

Sugar (brown or white) Oil (I use coconut but any oil will work) Lemon juice Lemon zest

Add the desired amount of sugar in a container or mixing bowl. Put in the zest. Slowly pour in the oil until all sugar granules are coated but not saturated in it. Finally add the lemon juice until you reach the desired consistency.

Both the lemon juice and lemon zest are completely optional. The juice helps lighten any marks while the zest gives a refreshing smell. You can substitute cinnamon and vanilla extract for a sweet, more wintery smell or just leave it plain.

Use the sugar scrub around your kitty but be extremely cautious not to get it inside as it might cause imbalances and yeast infections.

Do not substitute salt for sugar as it’s too harsh and will sting during shaving.

DO NOT USE BABY OIL. I can’t even believe that this is a product intended for babies! The ingredients are disgusting and extremely harmful.

Here’s why:

“Traditional baby oil is typically mineral oil, a petroleum-based ingredient. Mineral oil coats the skin just like a plastic wrap and messes with your baby’s natural immune barrier. This inhibits the skin’s ability to breathe and compromises its capacity to release toxins.”

Keep it away from you and your coochie.

Shave: if you chose a scrub just rinse off the granules with lukewarm water but DO NOT wash off the oil. It will protect your skin from the blades and prevent burns, cuts, irritation and discomfort. If you are using an oil free option to exfoliate you will need to apply oil afterwards. (Again choose the oil that suits you best.)

Choose a men’s razor with four blades (My favorite is Gillette fusion pro glide) and change the blades often.

Typically the oil is more than enough. If though you have supah sensitive skin and especially if you are shaving for a second day in a row you might wanna try shaving UNDERWATER. Yes you read that right. This method saved me!! Just sit as comfortably as you can in the tub and submerge the parts you want to shave in the warm water WITH THE OIL ON and shave.

Aftercare: use a gentle body wash to remove the oil from your body and a feminine wash or plain water to rinse your kitty.

Use a clean towel and pat the shaved areas dry.

I use alcohol free witch hazel as a toner on the areas where I’m prone to breakouts and bumps to naturally and gently disinfect the skin and close the pores. You can also mix apple cider vinegar with water in a 1:3 ratio and use that instead.

As a second step I like to slather on some aloe Vera gel to hydrate and smooth the skin.

Once it’s soaked I top everything off with some natural aftershave balm (my favorite is the bulldog original aftershave balm, it’s super cheap and all natural)

The following days: you can apply some moisturizer or oil with a few drops of tea tree oil on the areas where you get razor bumps and post shave breakouts to eliminate them. I like to use Aloe Vera gel consistently to moisturize and smooth sensitive areas.

How do I find people to tie with? Make a Fetlife account and search for “[My City] Rope.” Classes, Munches or Skill Shares are a good place to start.

But I’m shyyyyyyyyyyyy.

I can relate. But the bright side is, those events tend to be EXTREMELY newbie friendly.  It’s not at all uncommon for people to wander into their first rope event bewildered and alone (I did).   

At a place like Rope Bite, they’re used to that.  They will likely see you coming a mile away, make sure you feel welcome, and pair you up with somebody else that doesn’t have a partner.  

How long should ropes be? when in doubt, you sorta can’t go wrong with 25-26 feet (about 8 meters)

for decorative self ties, or if you’re only buying one rope, up to 30 feet (9 meters) is ok too.  Longer than 30 feet will probably be a pain in the ass.  

How much rope do I need?  3 to get someone tied up, 5 to really have some fun, 7 for most non-suspension applications.

Can heavier people be suspended?  yes. here’s a photo of a self suspension i tied and shot at a weight of 242 lbs (110 kg).

To anyone who needs a little pampering or self care advice I got you and just general life stuff that helps me feel calmer and happy

✨ if ur struggling with bad skin wash your pillow cases and bed sheets as often as you can. The feeling of fresh sheets is nice too

✨ rubbing a natural oil into your nails (like almond oil, avocado, olive, coconut) helps with those nasty dry cuticles

✨ carry round blotting papers if u have oily skin they are a life saver

✨ shave with baby oil - will minimise bumps and u will get a closer shave

✨ carry an emergency overnight bag in your car (if you got one) with change of underwear, sanitary items (if you get periods), contraception, wet wipes, deodorant and some cheap but nice body spray

✨ use castor oil every night on your lashes brows and edges or wherever your hair is thinning to thicken the hair and help growth, and get the fleeky natural brows & lashes u always wanted

✨ coconut oil makes a great chapstick that won’t dry out your lips. Put it into an empty small tin when the oil is in liquid form for a handbag friendly treat for your lips

✨ use spf eye cream when you go out you will thank yourself years later 😉

✨ applying dry shampoo the night before will make your hair feel voluminous and less of that dusty feelin the next day

✨ wear silk underwear to bed even on ur own and love your self for being the sexy snack you are ♥️

✨ if ur in the U.K Superdrug have a body spray range that are dupes of high end perfumes like Alien and Black Opium for £3 each

✨ if you don’t have a lot of friends or no ones free to meet up plan a day out with yourself and go exploring in nature and learn who you really are and what you love doing as a person

✨ a translucent baby pink nail polish or a French manicure is super cute and appropriate for work and school u can’t really go wrong

✨ mix ur coconut oil with some shimmer body spray for a sexy summer body moisturiser that will leave u glowing and sparkling in the sun

✨ ABH dipbrow pomade and a setting power over your brows will have them lasting all day (and night)

✨ dedicate one night a week as your self care night. When you have no plans turn the lights out, light some scented candles and listen to relaxing lofi music while you browse tumblr with a sheet mask & hair mask on. Exfoliate ur skin & feet, paint ur nails a new colour whatever makes u feel pampered.

✨ if u wear eyeshadow use a shimmery white or pale pink in inner the corner of ur eyes to make them look bigger and brighter, u can also put eye pencil on the lash line to make your eyes stand out more

✨ if you have limp & damaged hair and want beachy waves sleep in French braids !!!

✨ remember that all these ‘hoe tips’ and self care tips are just advice and u don’t need them to be beautiful or feminine or whatever cause you are amazing and you should love your self either way
