This piece was challenging to understand. The language and word choice was confusing I had to look up some of the words so I could get a good understanding of what’s going on. I did like the way he expalained a discoursed community with 6 different characteristics. I thought that was a nice layout and I could follow his train of thought a little bit better that way. Those six charactersitics could easliy apply to alot of clubs, organizations, fraternities and sororities we have here on campus. I think that a college campus especailly one as diverse as UNCC is large collection of discourse communitites,Â
Radical Revision Project
Mama Watts Hooked on Phonics Recipe
Ingredients:
a small child
an eager mother with teaching skills
the hooked on phonics materials
a desk
willingness to put in time and effort
patience
Step one: The eager mom with teaching skills should grab her small child and Hooked on Phonic materials.
Step two: Â Proceed to a desk because small children like me typically get very distracted anywhere else.
Step three: Review the Alphabet flash cards with the small child and make sure that they know the alphabet thoroughly. Yes, this is the part where the patience comes, please don’t get upset or frustrated with the small child because they are getting confused with their lower case “b’s” and lowercase “d’s”.
Step four: After the small child has memorized the alphabet start with the lowest level of Hooked on Phonics.
Step five: Once the child begins to master the lower levels of Hooked on Phonics proceed to the higher levels. Be sure to stay dedicated to the process. Be willing to set aside time at least 5 days out of the week and be willing to put in the continuous effort.
Step six: Time varies on how long each child learns to read but the final product will be a beautiful child with amazing literacy skills.
Shitty First Drafts
I like how Lamott took a comical approach to writing this piece. I thought it was funny how she spoke about the "warm up" that comes with writing. The pushing up of the sleeves and the neck rolling almost sounds like the writer is preparing for a sporting event. I really liked this article because it is very relevant to what we are doing in class. I won't speak for everybody but I know on Wednesday we will have at least one sh*tty first draft and it will be mine. After reading this I do feel better because Lamott did say that only one person out of a group of great writers can sit down and write a beautiful first draft. So odds are telling me my first draft will be horrible and I am going to hate to one person in class with the perfect paper. She mentioned writing drafts that were twice as long as they needed to be, I thought that was a good tactic. I think I could easily write a lot but my thought process is so random I don't think it would be very coherent. Lamott said hers was like that too but I just feel like whoever grades my first draft will have a lot of work to do. #sorrynotsorry #writingisdifficult #isspringbreakhereyet #11amiskindaearly #5pagepaper #firstdraftssuck #thispaperwillbethedeathofme #lamott #shesfunny #UWRT1101-003
Malcom X
I really connected with Mr. X at the beginning of the piece. He said he was the most articulate hustler on the street. Although I do not hustle I am the most articulate in my group of friends. Also like Mr. X I struggle to put what I am thinking in writing. In my mind it sounds so nice and well thought out. That being said when it comes time to put what I am thinking on paper is a different story.
I was also really impressed by thirst for knowledge. He mention when they turn the lights out he still found a way to read. He was so self motivated that he educated himself past his 8th grade education. He speaks about he loved reading Muhammad's pieces. He said Muhammad's work spread so quickly throughout the United States because it was relate able to all Negros. When he said that it reminded me of myself because I will read something I am interested all day. If the piece is boring and I can't really relate to it I become uniterested very quickly.
3 Metaphors #UWRT
The irony of this reading is so crazy. Literally last night when I was at this event that took forever (which is the reason I am doing this the day of and not last night) we had this discussion. A guy started mentioning literacy and what it is. In my mind I am thinking the obvious answer literacy is the ability to read. After reading this article I realize that is not always the case. Literacy is more than just my basic definition. I liked in the article how it mentions how literacy can be a social factor. In some parts of the world writing your name qualifies you as literate. In other parts memorizing sacred pieces of literature qualifies you as literate. That spoke to me because it is crazy to think that I could go to another part of the world and not be considered literate because I do not already know the sacred literature they are talking about. Maybe I am jumping the gun on that part but I still wonder who sets these qualifications for the different parts of the world. Then again whose to say we as a society didn't set them ourselves?
