It's All Just Talk | Katniss

Katniss Everdeen, the Girl on Fire. His Girl on Fire, technically. Or was he even still their mentors now that they won? Guess it didn’t really matter until the next Games. Whatever the case, he would always look at Katniss like somewhat of a daughter, and Peeta like a son. Even if he was an annoying kid sometimes.

It was past nine o’clock and the sky was already dark. What Katniss said to him made him think again. About the whole ‘underground rebellion’ thing. So, she ended up understanding the meaning behind the bracelet and wanted to do something. Haymitch scoffed to himself and shook his head. He decided it best to listen to what she had to say and if she had anything good, he’d pass it on to Plutarch. If not, well…. He’d still pass it on to Plutarch.

Haymitch had just plopped himself on his lovely couch when he heard the knock on the door. He groaned, not wanting to get up. Good thing he left it unlocked. “It’s unlo—” Katniss came in anyway and he grumbled. “—cked….. Glad you could make it, sweetheart. Now sit.”

Katniss knew it was a good idea to let Peeta alone for a while. She wasn't exactly making herself friends in the Capitol, the way she'd been speaking to some of the Capitol Citizens... If she was going to be punished for it, she wasn't going to drag Peeta down with her.

It didn't help that she began to finally understand what Haymitch's gift to her had meant. It wasn't small, what he was suggesting, and it wasn't safe, either. Which didn't mean anything to Katniss. The way Holden had talked about her sister is what really made Katniss understand. That was when she realized what Haymitch had been asking her to do months earlier, and that was when she realized she would have no problem obliging, that she would risk her life to be a part of the rebellion. 

That's what it was. That's what it had to be. The Mockingjay... It took her a little while to riddle out that it suggested a rebellion. It was when Cinna brought it up. The Mockingjay pin was such a significant symbol of her in the Games, and the way she'd stood up to the Capitol - of course going to represent something. How could she have not seen it before?

As Katniss approached Haymitch's door, she found herself wondering how long he had been waiting for her to put the pieces together. Was she just being stupid? She knocked twice, and didn't bother waiting for a response before she turned the handle. If there was one thing she learned about Haymitch (probably something that wasn't one of his greatest assets), it was that he wouldn't lock doors if he was expecting someone, most of the time because of laziness.

Katniss smiled at his invitation, closing the door and locking it before she moved to the couch across from his. She'd gotten used to being called 'Sweetheart', at this point - while it had once annoyed her, it now felt like a little piece of home, a familiar nickname from someone she could actually consider a friend. One of few.

She didn't waste any time. "So," Katniss started, slipping the bangle Haymitch had given her off of her wrist and holding it up. "This bracelet. Are my suspicions right in that it's more than just a bracelet?"
