Carreon awarded as the Sportswoman of the Year

As the 2018–2019 Sportsfest had begun, the two rivalries, CHASE and BUS-IT from the basketball women have met again in the championship for the second time in a row. Before it was the CHASE who brought home the bacon, and still they owned the triumph this season.   One of the achievements that every athlete could get is be the sportsman in every game and competition. In this year’s sportsfest, CHASE’s point guard Jewel Carreon was part of the mythical 5 and became the sportswoman of the year. “It’s a good title, everyone who played well deserves it. If you’ll ask me if I want it again, not really but if it will be given to me, thank you.” Carreon said. 

The team was pressured as they faced in the championship their all-time rivalry, BUS-IT. “Our coach always tells us to trust one another and work as a team.” Their coach guided them and was confident because she trusts her team the most. “Not to boast but we all have trust in each other, our minds were set that we will win this year and must show that can conquer the game” Carreon added.

Meet Elai: The Woman Behind The Trophy

Elai Cabuag is the current coach of the CHASE Basketball Women where they had once again taken home the trophy of the SPUQC Sportsfest Championship Basketball Game for Women last October 29, 2018 in St. Paul University Quezon City.

She first coached the Mass Communication Basketball Women Team for five years until it turned into CHASE where PBREN (Psychology, Biology, Religious Education and Nursing) was merged together with Mass Comm. and she continued to coached them for two years, in total, she had been coaching the team for seven years. She also played for the team back when she was still in college in SPUQC as a Mass Communication student for 3 years as a Point Guard. She decided to continue with CHASE and coach them when she saw that the team had a potential in winning. She was just an assistant coach in 2014 until the head coach during that time decided to leave the team. Elai came to the decision to take a risk and be the head coach of CHASE from there on.

The most important strategy in winning according to her is teamwork, “We have to be a team” is what she always says to the them. Every year, new players come in and old players come to say goodbye, Elai makes sure that the bond of the players are intact and the team is whole. One way in gaining the trust of the players is “you have to make them your friend”.

What Elai likes the most about CHASE is the solid friendship of the team despite coming from different courses, they all managed to feel comfortable with each other, lift one another and hangout after trainings and games. Because of this relationship, they all love to play basketball and she can see that they are really enjoying it. It was their friendship, energy and dedication to win that makes CHASE different from the other teams.

When asked if she would still be continuing to coach CHASE in the future, she answered

“Of course! As long as gusto nila maglaro.” She also added, “Gusto kong ilove nila yung basketball as much as I love it.”

5 Tips On How To Save Money

1. Set Goals.

How can one earn money without a goal to reach? Think of something that’ll motivate you to earn. Would you like to buy a new pair of sneakers? a new lipstick? or to travel when you graduate? Have something in mind that’ll make you help you save your money.

2. Are you really hungry?

Do you ever get the feeling when you just ate something then suddenly you still feel hungry? Ask yourself, are you really that hungry? When food meets the eye, it’s hard to fight the urge of not buying when you have money with you. It’s going to be even harder when you’re craving for something. Sometimes, our mind makes us drool over certain foods once we see them and make us go hungry but in reality, we are not. Learn how to be practical and stop wasting all your money on food. Learn to stop after eating one meal. And when you come to think of it, you will save money and won’t gain any weight.

3. Leave an amount out.

Ever thought of not bringing your whole allowance in school? Try bringing only an amount that you think is necessary to be spent on. Bringing extra money is okay incase of emergencies, but the question is, do you really use it for emergencies? If your allowance is 250 php for example, set aside 100 pesos for your commute fare, 100 pesos for you food then leave the 50 pesos in your room so that you wouldn’t spend it outside. We have the tendancy that when there is still money, we can still spend on something. So when you do this tip, there won’t be enough money for you to spend on other things for you only brought the exact amount of money for the necessary things for the day.

4. Pack Lunch.

Want to have a faster way of earning money? Do not spend it on food. The prices of meals are getting higher as time goes by and bringing food with you from home to school saves a lot of money. Looking back on my Tip #3, If you leave 100 php that was supposed to be your food money at home and brought packed lunch instead, you instantly add an extra 100 on your savings and makes you save up to 500 pesos a week. Plus, food served in your homes are cleaner and way healthier unlike what you buy outside.

5. Learn to say no.

Friends always invite you to hangout? It’s okay to say no sometimes. It wouldn’t make you a lesser of a friend if you don’t come to the dinner tonight. Hanging out with your friends means you’re going to spend more than you usually do. The phrase “Last na ‘to” is breakable, remember that. There’s always going to be a second time. Just think of it, you don’t get to spend money and got time for yourself to relax.

Derrick White is back to play for the SPURS

Derrick White was expected to return to play for Spurs in San Antonio’s game versus Miami Heat. White is cleared to play again in the NBA after his recent injury, having revealed he had a left plantar fascia tear back then on Oct. 10. 

He had been practicing with the Spurs G league to get ready for his comeback, playing simulations of 3vs3’s and 5vs5’s. The injury made SPURS to look for a temporary replacement and they did. 

Gregg Popovich was glad with Bryn Forbes work for being the fill in starter for while White is still recovering. Forbes scored 12.7 points in 28.6 minutes per game. Dejounte Murray and Loonie Walker IV had suffered from an injury but despite of that Spurs won four of their five last games to claim an early lead in.

SHS Basketball team owns CHASE in the first game

In the first quarter, the game went on SHS’s side, they were already leading with 14 points over CHASE’s 6 points. Casimero gets 6 points for SHS in the first quarter of the game. The second quarter of the game was no different, SHS kept on leading with 37 points while Aljin John Aduca scores for CHASE with the score of 22. 

Both teams kept on having fouls and leaving a lot of free throws on both teams, Jericho Saquido scores for CHASE for free throws while Casimero scores for SHS free throws. 

The third quarter of the game kept being on SHS’s side, with a leading of 49 points over 27 points from CHASE. The fourth quarter of the game was intense because of the fighting spirit of CHASE team with 29 points in the remaining 7 minutes of the gams while SHS has 51 points. 

The last 15 seconds, SHS took over the ring with the final score of 75 points over 33 points from CHASE. Cholo Ravago commented about the lose of their team saying, “Wala eh, Kulang kami sa height, at tska bata pa sila eh, eh kami? May stamina problems kami eh and ngayon puro acads kami ngayon, kulang sa condition. Pero okay lang puso pa naman din. Bawi nalang sa susunod.”

A 'Mythical Six' Member of Volleyball Men Shares His Journey In The Athletic Competition in SPUQC

Get to know Kristian Lloyd Gabriel, one of St. Paul University Q.C.'s 'Mythical Six' members of Volleyball Men as he shares his journey into joining the college department's athletic competition for October 2018: 

1. HE LOVES TO PLAY WITH BALLS

Kristian started playing the sport volleyball since he was in grade three. He then joined the varsity team when he was in first year high school and became a member of mythical in second year high school. When in grade nine and ten, he became the team captain of his volleyball team. 

2. HIS FIRST LOVE WAS BOWLING

You all would not easily believe that volleyball is not his first ball game since all he was doing since he was a kid is to play volleyball. His first ball sport is bowling and he considers volleyball as another ball game of his passion. With his skills, he also became a part of National Team of bowling. 

3. A MAN FULL OF GOALS

Kristian focused more on playing volleyball since this sport is part of olympic games which he aspires to be part of. He was supposed to be a University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) player but he did not accept his scholarship because of thesis defense and also for the reason of having to travel for 9 hours since he was studying in Dubai.

4. LIKE PARENTS LIKE SON

Kristian's mother used to play volleyball while his father was a UAAP player of basketball. No doubt that he is a good player since he inherited the skills and devotion for the love of sports from his parents. 

5. KRISTIAN TO ASPIRING PLAYERS

"Height does not matter. What matters is, mautak ka maglaro. Wala sa galing yan pero, basta mautak ka maglaro, panalo kana. Yun lang yun." Kristian says to the aspiring players.

Ta-da! Aren't you inspired by Kristian's achievements? At a very young age, he has accomplished a lot and at this stage of his early life, he already know what he wants to be in the near future. Kristian dreams big and that is the reason for his early success in life. Be passionate, optimistic and always be grateful.

A Day of Commemorating the Feast of Immaculate Conception

Paulinians and faculty from Basic Education Department up to College Department of St. Paul University Quezon City gathered for the celebration of the feast of Immaculate Conception on Friday, seventh of December, 2018. 

The event commenced with the holy gathering of students and teachers from Basic Education Department at the University Chapel at exactly 7:30 AM. Some selected students dressed up with "Huwag Kang Magnakaw" shirt in partaking the Holy Rosary with flowers and candles to offer to the Virgin Mary. 

Grades two to five students then have watched a movie titled "Children of Heaven" at the James B. Reuter Theater in commemorating the event. Faculty who prepared the movie watching made it suitable for the children who were present. The movie shows values and learnings and able to help Paulinians realize to grow as children of God.

"Launching of Year of the Youth" has been the theme for the anticipated mass that was held at the Mere Marie Micheau Hall right after the movie watching. College Department then merged with the Basic Education Department in the holy mass for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. The priest that performed the Holy Eucharist that day narrated his encounter with a girl who was almost raped by an Angkas driver and he said that all the girl did was to pray. The homily consisted of of letting Paulinians realize that whatever the situation is, just look up to God.

As seen in the Paulinian's faces before starting the segment in the afternoon, The Feast that was led by The Kerygma can be considered as the most awaited portion of the event. Paulinians were shouting their hearts out as the opening billboard started to play in the screen. They were very excited to take part in the praise and worship for God. The heat that afternoon did not stop the Paulinian from glorifying The Lord even if the gymnasium was really crowded. The performers really engaged themselves with the crowd by singing songs that are in trend in connection with their talk about God and that resulted to a lively and powerful event. Jan Silan that was a former Paulinian led The Feast with his talk about love and students enjoyed it as they have been laughing and engaging themselves with the speaker. Some Paulinias cried and really felt the message that The Kerygma have pronounced. The Kerygma had an encore with a Feast worship song requested by many of the Paulinians. 

Before the sun sets, Paulinians had a procession where Immaculate Conception was carried around outside the school. The procession started from Aurora Boulevard going to Gilmore Avenue and back again to Aurora Boulevard. The procession procedes with the students and faculty members praying the Holy Rosary with lighted candle in hand. It became holier as the students sang together the given piece for every after the mystery of the Holy Rosary.

Nearing to the end of the event, Paulinians together with the faculty and sisters gathered around the plaza for the crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It drizzled that time but it only lasted for approximately 2 minutes. The event continued and nothing stopped everyone in commemorating the special day of the Immaculate Conception. 

The SPUQC Chorale and two students from Senior High School sang before the countdown. Also, the Senior High School students who were the champion of the Streetdance competition were invited to dance followed by the Dance Theater Arts. The event ended with the Christmas Lighting in the school and considered it as a mini celebration of Paulinians for the Christmas.

Lighting of Christmas Tower Spread Festive Vibes in SPUQC

Students gathered together at the James B. Reuter Plaza last December 7, 2018 to celebrate the lighting of St. Paul University Quezon City’s Christmas tower.

After giving honor, praise, and worship for the feast day of the Immaculate Conception, the students altogether went to to the plaza to witness the countdown of the lighting of the Christmas tower that indeed, brought color and vibrancy to the school’s campus.

The SPUQC Chorale, opened the program with a wonderful song number, which had a back to back performance with this year’s Street Dance Competition Champions from the Senior High School. Also, two Senior High School students showcased their talents by singing their rendition of the famous “All I Want for Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey.

The sun starts to set and the countdown finally began, the Christmas tower and the whole campus was filled with festive lights and bright colors that would really captivate one’s attention.

In relation to the Christmas festivities, the Dance Theater Arts (DTA) performed a short dance number that had a bit of a Christmas vibe together with their outfits which had a combination of red and white. And finally, the DTA helped in ending the night with a bang by engaging the crowd to dance with them and dance the night away.

Indie Know: The Take Over

The generation today proved that Original Pilipino Music, better known as O.P.M. is clearly, not dead (did it even die?). Millennials are now hooked into Independent bands/musicians and usually pay from at least Php350.00 just to see these bands perform live. Who are these bands that the teens of today are fanatical about? Check them out!

 1.     Ben & Ben

                       This group was founded last 2015 and is made up of nine members. With Paolo Benjamin Guico and Miguel Benjamin Guico as their vocalists, these twins came up with the band name which came from their name “Benjamin”, hence, the name “Ben&Ben”. The group became famous for their song titled “Kathang Isip” which reached 33 million views on youtube for its music video, and 23 million views for the lyric video. This group is also known for their songs like “Bibingka” which is a song about a Misa De Gallo love story, “Ride Home”, “Maybe The Night”, which became the Official Soundtrack for the 2018 movie Exes Baggage, and “Leaves”. Other members include: Poch Baretto (Electric Guitarist), Jam Villanueva (Drummer), Agnes Reoma (Bassist), Patricia Lasaten (Keyboardist), Toni Munoz (Percussionist), Andrew de Pano (Percussionist), and Kiefer Cabugao (Violinist).

  2.     IV of Spades

                       This group of boys, formed by Unique Salonga (Lead singer), Zild Benitez (Bassist), Blaster Silonga (Lead Guitarist), and Badjao de Castro (Drummer) will make you get a glimpse of the 70’s not only because of their outfits, but also because of the vibe of the type of music that they release. The band was formed by Allan Silonga who was looking for members who would collaborate with his son, Blaster, to form a band. Through connections, IV of Spades was made. “Ilaw Sa Daan”, was the title of their debut song, which already reached 3.3 million views on youtube. Another famous hit was “Hey Barbara”, which talked about feminism. Unfortunately, earlier this 2018, Unique Salonga, left the band and started to pursue his own career as an artist. The remaining three, continued their journey as IV of Spades.

  3.     December Avenue

                       This indie band is known for touching the hearts of their listeners. Zel Bautista (Vocalist), together with Jem Manuel, Don Gregorio, Jet Danao, and Gelo Cruz, this band is consistent in releasing music which is usually dedicated to the heartbroken people of today. It’s been a decade since this band started but the fire of their recognition from the listeners today is still something to be proud of. December Avenue is known for their heartbreaking lyrics, matched with heartbreaking music videos as well. Some of their well known songs are: “Kung ‘Di Rin Lang Ikaw” which was a collaboration with Moira Dela Torre, “Bulong”, “Sa Ngalan Ng Pag-Ibig”, “Kahit ‘Di Mo Alam”, and “Eroplanong Papel”.

4.     I Belong To The Zoo

                       The band started back in 2014, when lead singer, Argee Guerrero wanted to promote his music and wanted to write songs about feelings that he himself could not even explain to his closest friends. In an interview, Argee said that the band name was created because he had a lot of insecurities. In just a short span of time, the band grew bigger together with their listeners who support and even cry whenever their music is heard. I Belong To The Zoo became known for their heartbreaking songs “Sana” and “Balang Araw”.

  5.     Munimuni Band

                       “Birthed through reflective thinking and arbitrary daydreaming”, Munimuni is made up of Adj Jiao, Red Calayan, TJ de Ocampo, John Owen Castro, and Jolo Ferrer. These members all came from University of the Philippines with the same amount of burning love for Christ. The band’s approach in the music industry is through “makata-pop”, a genre incorporated with Philippine poetry reminiscent of the book of Psalms and Huseng Batute. Munimuni started last 2017 with their mini album called “Simula” which is composed of six songs. The band is known for their song “Sa Hindi Pag-Alala” which struck the hearts of their listeners because of the strong lyrics.

The Birth of the Millennial in the Philippines: Who are they and what do they do?

Millennials in the Philippines are described as those who are social media-dependent, they are born unto the comforts of the digital age and also the “selfie” generation. Many things describe what a millennial is. Millennials in the Philippines are known to usually spend for luxury goods which they leave their bank accounts shaken and the reason why they are also described as “broke.” Some may say that which can make you control the world through politically and socially.

When it comes to entertainment, millennials in the Philippines are usually seen spending time online, watching videos and surfing the internet. They are usually the ones who are updated when it comes to the latest apps, watch the latest TV series, and also what is the latest hits.  They never missed out what is on the top list. Millennials in the Philippines do not usually read newspapers. Instead, they have Google for their information and when it comes to road directions they have Waze. That is why they are all dependent on the internet nowadays because of the technologies that are being upgraded.

They have been described as being lazy, materialistic, self-expressive, fun-loving and liberal. That is also what I observed about the millennials. They do what ever they want to do, they are not sensitive enough on their surroundings once they are focused on the internet. They have their own personalities. Some may say that millennials are useless. They have different versions of themselves depending on what they want to show the world, what they want to express as a millennial. You should also know that being a millennial varies across regions, and not all millennials possess the very same character they are described as. Always learn from the past, plan for your future that what is best for you by focusing on today.

In relation to St. Paul University of Quezon City, The millennial people, or the generation Y, are much like the students in many ways. For instance, many of the students in our university are fun-loving and liberal in their own way. The students of SPUQC, being a part of the millennial community of the Philippines, spend most of their time using the internet for academic and non academic purposes thus making us very dependent to it and to all the other technologies that surround our world today.

Ms. Universe’s battle against SPUQC’s Final Exams

St. Paul University Quezon City is currently holding their final exams which started last Monday, December 17, 2018. On the same day, the most intriguing pageant of the year fell on an examination day, but that did not stop the students of the BA Communication students from watching the said pageant to support Catriona Gray, the representative of the Philippines.

Ms. Apodaca, a professor on Linguistics of the Communication Students, is very vocal about her support for Ms. Philippines saying that the country and Catriona has a huge chance of bringing home the crown.

In the midst of the ongoing Linguistics exam, some students who had finished taking the test started streaming live and caused a bit of a fuss inside the classroom of the Communication students. Question and Answer came, and even the students who were still taking the exam, stopped and watched the livestream to show support and interest for Catriona.

As time passes by and as almost half of the class were done with their exams, they gathered at the center of the classroom to watch the Ms. Universe pageant with Ms. Apodaca in the middle. Everyone showed nervousness and excitement at the same time, students holding each others hands, others recording the reactions of their fellow classmates, and others you could not even talk to due to the enthusiasm and concentration in watching the pageant.

How To Not Be Late For School

These are 8 ways that can help you arrive in school on time and also manage your time.

1.      Organize the clothes that you will be wearing for school

It will save up so much time, if you are already decided on what you will wear for school, but if the school requires you to wear uniform, make sure that it is well-ironed and ready for the next day.

2.      Take a bath or shower before bed

This will save time if ever you won’t wake up to your alarm immediately.

3.      Finish all your homeworks the night before

Don’t save it for the morning. Finishing everything before going to bed will let you wake up at a normal hour and will not cause you stress the next day.

4.      Clean your room before going to sleep

This will make it easier for you to find things if ever there is something you need for school

5.      Set an alarm the night before

Make sure that you set an alarm 20 minutes earlier from your wake up time. This will make you a little bit awake and be able to get up right on time.

6.      Get up immediately when you hear the alarm

Just get out of the bed, no more snoozing of alarms.

7.      Avoid distractions

While eating your breakfast, you don’t need to open your television or use your phone. Just eat. While taking a bath, don’t take your phone in there and listen to music. These are your distractions, tv shows and social media can wait, but your professor cannot.

8.      Make sure to allot enough time for your travel time.

Leave 30 minutes earlier than your usual schedule of leaving the house because you cannot predict the traffic and it can be the reason why you are late for school.
