It’s all finished! I know I’ve been rather silent lately on Instagram, and it’s because I’ve been working hard on finishing this commissioned 11” x 14” watercolor of a home in RVA. By far, it has been the most detailed and complex commission to date... but I think that the time put into it was well worth it! The trickiest part was getting the perspective correct during the drawing process, and then painting the willow oak leaves on top. It was a wonderful opportunity for practicing foliage, and you can bet that I’ve got plans for tree & plant paintings in the future, as well as more time spent wandering around Malvern Gardens! Was going through my portfolio the other week and found this little guy, painted last spring. We went up to Lexington, Va as a family for a little weekend trip, and as we were driving around the mountains we found a lovely little inn and restaurant, which served up some deliciously crisp and buttery green beans... Anyways, I’ve just listed this guy in the shop for any mountain lovers out there 🤗🏔🏔 (at House Mountain Inn)

Detail of this little house illustration... the steps are my favorite part! And sorry for the shadow created by my hand... 😳 I promise there was nothing interesting to see in that corner anyways! Total size of the painting is 7” x 4 1/2”, which means that this portion pictured is roughly the size of a post-it note in comparison. (at Richmond, Virginia)

Got a new batch of three little house portraits completed and shipped over the weekend. Now time to clear off my desk and get back to finishing some RVA paintings! 💪🏼 (at Richmond, Virginia)

95% percent done, and I’m happy with the end result. Got a few more power lines that are only penciled in, not painted, and some marks in the margins that need to be erased. Swipe to see the entire paper with deckled (hand torn) edges. It’s amazing how there are still a few leaves left on the ground, even in February. (at Fan district)

Progress so far on this guy- it getting nearer to done! There is a lot of high contrast in this picture, with the light catching the silver-y bits on the trash cans and the sides of the fence. (at Museum District, Richmond, Virginia)

Between traveling, meeting with folks and some very important gift crafting, it’s been pretty much a non existent week in the studio- which is not to say it hasn’t been a good week though! Next week I’ll be back, finishing up this painting and starting another for this current series of RVA alleyways 🤗 (at Richmond, Virginia)

I guess this is another #fridayintroductions ! If it isn’t obvious from my handle, my name is Katy ✨ I’m married to an awesome guy named Matt, and mom to an energetic, imaginative, and athletic little man named Cyrus 😍 I come from a family of artists and crafters, with parents who were into diy projects before it ever was a thing. 😂 I fill my days as a stay at home mom, and spend early mornings and nap times painting, even though some days it seems impossible to concentrate/ be productive (or even wake up- let’s be honest! 😂😂😂) This summer I’m working on a series I’ve affectionately dubbed the “RVA Calendar” Basically, it’s a culmination of my experiences as a mom, taking my little man on strolls all throughout the neighborhood, and obsessively photographing everything that catches my eye, which turns out to be mostly all of the gritty, romantic alleyways...😍 There will be one painting from each month of the year, and yes, the end goal is to have a calendar & some stationary printed in time for the holidays! (And hopefully a show so you lovely RVA folks can see the work in person too!) But mainly, this series stems from a desire to share the way I see beauty in this lovely little city I call home! 💕 (at Richmond, Virginia)

Another NYC sketch-and this one is the last! Done at Hudson River Park, looking back at the city skyline. Amazing views of downtown, the Hudson and downtown jersey on the other side of the river. Month of December drawing done! I’m pleased with the way this turned out- especially the reflection of the building in the puddle. Those bricks had to be redone 3 times until the proportions were right, but it was worth the extra effort. (at Museum District, Richmond, Virginia)

My most complete sketch during my NYC trip- while drinking coffee and eating a bagel. Somehow, mornings always seem to be the most productive time for me to draw... (at Upper East Side)
