Listened to all of S1 of Red Valley last night and I really appreciate how they clue you in early to the fact that the characters are bugged because you hear Warren and Gordon start recording minutes into the episode. Such an eerie feeling right off the jump because obviously the easy thing to do would be to have Warren or Gordon’s recordings be the storytelling device but no. From episode one you know something’s wrong because the wrong person is telling the story and I just think that’s so fun.

Thinking about the moral dichotomy of Anne and Mike in contrast with the fact that Mike is also our unreliable narrator for the game. In the early episodes especially. Mike who opens the narrative calling himself a piece of shit, and we're first introduced to Anne when he calls her sweet and hopes she isn't involved in the dark stuff he's stuck in now. Anne asking Mike for help with her first kill and he takes this as a moral weakness, something he himself struggled with, instead of her planning being better than his to not go alone to do it. He calls her stupid along with sweet because he thinks she's failed the fourth challenge not knowing she's already won. Anne's already shot him in the head and continued on in her life and he thinks so truly that she won't be able to do it. It's not out of a lack of trust in her abilities but more so a deep hidden belief in the goodness of people (of her) but the inherent lack of it in himself. Mike Walters hates himself but he loves Anne, and the idea that she's just as bad as him, just as smart in a devious morally dubious way cracks open his idea of how the world is supposed to work in his mind that he can't plan for it ahead of time. She's three steps ahead of him because she knows him. Anne is just as bad of a person as him and she knows it and isnt as ruined by this fact, but he doesn't know. Forces himself not to know. To make himself worse at the end of the game. And that's his fatal flaw
