New Year’s Eve in the Philippines is always exciting and full of energy. People celebrate on December 31 with food, music, dancing, and of course, fireworks lighting up the sky. Many families also attend watch night services to welcome the new year with prayer and reflection. The celebrations usually continue past midnight into New Year’s Day.

Media Noche is one of my favorite parts of New Year in the Philippines. On New Year’s Eve, families prepare a huge feast to welcome the coming year with abundance and joy. The term literally means “midnight” in Spanish, and it’s a tradition that symbolizes good luck and prosperity for the next year.

There’s always fireworks, banging pots, and loud noises to scare away any bad luck from the past year. I personally like the fruit tradition, eating 12 round fruits, one for each month, hoping for prosperity. Some people even jump at midnight to grow taller!

Every New Year feels like a fresh start. Even if the past year was tough, everyone hopes for good luck, health, and happiness. I love how Filipino New Year is a mix of fun, family, and traditions. Honestly, it always makes me excited.

"Paskong Pinoy"

Christmas in the Philippines it’s like the ultimate holiday season here. Did you know we have one of the longest Christmas seasons in the world? People start celebrating as early as September, sometimes even August, with lights, music, and decorations everywhere. December is the peak, of course, but the festive spirit actually stretches until the first week of January. For me, it’s amazing how this holiday brings everyone together for family, food, and traditions, making it truly special.

The Joy of Simbang Gabi

Okay, waking up at 4 am for Simbang Gabi is kinda painful. But the streets lit up with parols make it so magical. For those who don’t know, Simbang Gabi is a 9 day dawn Mass dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and it started in the 16th century so even farmers and fishermen could attend early in the morning. After Mass, I usually grab bibingka or purple puto bumbong from the vendors outside! People say if you finish all 9 Masses, your wish comes true, which makes the whole experience even more exciting.

What is Noche Buena for Filipinos?

Now, Noche Buena is my absolute favorite part of Christmas. The term literally means “Good Night,” but for me it’s all about family, love, and togetherness. Midnight feast with everyone laughing, sharing stories, and enjoying roasted ham, desserts, etc, the best. This tradition shows how Filipinos celebrate not just food, but gratitude, joy, and family bonds.

Andres Bonifacio: Father of the Philippine Revolution

Early Life of Andres Bonifacio:

Andres Bonifacio was born on November 30, 1863, in Tondo, Manila. He came from a poor family and had to stop studying at 19 to support his younger siblings. He worked in trading companies handling materials like tar and rattan. In 1892, he joined La Liga Filipina, a group started by Jose Rizal for reforms. After Rizal was arrested, he helped found the Katipunan and became its leader, preparing Filipinos to fight for freedom.

The Katipunan:

Andres Bonifacio founded the Katipunan, also known as KKK. It was a secret group that aimed to gain freedom from Spanish rule. Members used secret codes and symbols to protect the group. Bonifacio was called the “Supremo” of the Katipunan.

The Cry of Pugad Lawin:

The Cry of Pugad Lawin marked the beginning of the Philippine Revolution. Andres Bonifacio and other Filipinos tore their cedulas. This act showed their courage and unity against Spanish rule.

Why Andres Bonifacio Is a Hero

Andres Bonifacio is a hero because he fought for freedom and equality. He stood for the poor and the oppressed. His bravery and love for the country continue to inspire Filipinos today.
