QUEEN OF TEARS (2024)
QUEEN OF TEARS (2024)
Suzanne Collins is one of the few contemporary writers who realizes the importance of names in her stories and the significance they bear. They add so many layers to the story, additional meanings that otherwise would not have existed.
The original trilogy:
Katniss: named after a plant of which you can eat the roots. Her father taught her where to find it and told her that “as long as you can find yourself, you’ll survive” (quote may be a little bit off, but it’s from one of the early chapters in THG). Additionally, the leaves are in the shape of an arrowhead, referencing her skills with the bow which her father also taught her how to use.
Peeta: literally bread lmao. But bread is one of the basic nutritions humans need, a little bit goes a long way to keep you alive. Peeta’s presence in Katniss’s life also kept her alive, literally and figuratively—the burned bread he threw her in the flashback and their complicated relationship.
Primrose: a plant with medicinal purposes, even more significant in light of her work as a medic in Mockingjay.
Gale: literally means “strong wind” and considering that in every encounter with Katniss he’s caused some reaction, he pulls her into directions she maybe initially doesn’t want to go in. Additionally, his name also represents his determination and steadfastness in his beliefs.
TBOSAS
Lucy Gray: named after William Wordsworth’s poem “Lucy Gray” which is about the titular character of the poem who got lost during a blizzard. She literally got lost in snow. Rachel Zegler sang this poem in two parts on the original soundtrack of the movie. When Snow asked who the girl in the song is, Lucy answers that she’s a mystery, just like her.
Snow: aside from the obvious snow references, I think his name is most significant in relation to Lucy and the poem. The only one who knows what caused her disappearance is Snow. He is the reason that Lucy is gone. But her traces in the snow are still visible. He will always remember her because the memory of Lucy has manifested itself in every part of his life.
Coriolanus: named after the Roman general (and also the titular character of Shakespeare’s play), Coriolanus wanted to attack Rome and become its ruler. He was scorned and celebrated by the people, only to be later exiled from the city by them. In TBOSAS, Coriolanus is the star pupil at the Capitol’s academy but sent into exile to the districts after he won the Games with Lucy through cheating.
Volumnia: Coriolanus mother who played a part in his ascent to power. In TBOSAS, she almost serves like a mentor to Coriolanus, teaching him how to think in terms of power.
(Edit) Sejanus: a roman soldier who was betrayed by the roman emperor Tiberius, just like the future president betrayed him.
(Edit) Plinth: got this info from here, but it was too good not to include here. A plinth is a base for a statue or vase to stand on. After Sejanus’s death, all of the Plinth fortune was given to Snow for being such a good to friend him. It was this money that skyrocketed the Snow family from poverty to filthy rich. The Plinth money was the foundation upon which Snow built his power.
There are so many other names that have historical (mostly Roman and Greek) connotations—Plutarch, Seneca, Cinna—but also regular names like Trinket and Beetee bear meanings that represent the character beautifully.
Names are important. For any lover of literature or (aspiring) writers, please look closely at them. They can shape your story into something unique.
Feel free to correct me if I’ve said something wrong. I know there are many names missing, but I can only add so many examples ✊🏻😔
I love that in Catching fire Katniss comes to the conclusion the other tributes are trying to keep Peeta alive because they must see how amazingly perfectly wonderful he is. When in actuality that’s just her having a crush and everyone else recognizing that if Peeta gets hurt Katniss will go fully feral and unhinged and probably try to kill everyone and then herself.
My thoughts after watching Hunger Games: Ballad of songbirds and snakes (and I read the book) :
1. I thought the character of Lucy Gray was too cynical. In the books, her “jokes” are due to her sense of humor and ease in conversations with others. In the movie she seemed a bit too mature for a 16 year old girl, but I still think she wasn't bad. She was very well acted by Rachel Zegler. The scenes that I had a problem with were those that were added from outside the book to convey the content, e.g. SPOILER! When Corio found the gun and she started joking that she was the only one left as evidence so maybe he should kill her. I just don't think Lucy Gray would ever say that (and she didn't). This scene gives the feeling that she knew what he was going to do, so that's why she left the house, and when I read the book, I was convinced that she ACTUALLY left to collect food.
2. I think Corio was too confident. In the books, between his internal dialogues, you can read that he is extremely unsure of himself (and I understand that internal dialogues cannot be given in a movie, but I think it should have been solved with other acting). He was too chill, e.g. after the scene when he "killed Lucy Gray" he simply returned to the base, where in the book it was shown as a panic, manic attack that he couldn't stop.
3. NOT ENOUGH ROMANCE!! I'm not normally that person, but come on, they kissed ONCE! ONCE! When in the book it was more common. I also think that cutting out the kiss before the games really changes their relationship dynamic, and cutting out the scene where Lucy Gray sings to the peacekeepers and sings specifically to Corio and then they confess their love to each other takes a lot away.
4. NOT ENOUGH SEJANUS! This was a very very important character in the books, and the fact that we didn't get A SINGLE SCENE in Sejanus' house is really strange.
5. I know it wasn't possible, AND I WASN'T BORN YESTERDAY, so I'm aware that the movies are different from the books, but I think it would be possible to present this entire 600 page masterpiece in 2 parts of the movie, just like we got Mockingjay part 1 and part 2.
The way that Snow was so convinced Hijacked Peeta would kill Katniss because snow definitely saw a bit of himself in Peeta. He too fell in love with a girl because of a song and he knows what it’s like to be in love, or at least he thinks he does. He was so quick to turn on Lucy Gray, the girl who sang and caused him to fall, so Peeta should be the same. Peeta too has a love rival, who knew his crush longer and better, but isn’t she supposed to be your’s? But Snow doesn’t understand real, REAL, love, like Lucy Gray’s love for him, and how no matter how hijacked Peeta was, he would still fight himself for Katniss.
One of the things all four victors of District 12 have in common is that all of them stayed with a dying tribute so that theirs passing could be at least peaceful.
Lucy Gray held Jessup as he died.
Haymitch held Maysilee as she died.
Katniss held Rue as she died
And Peeta held the girl Morphling as she died.
Can we PLEASE talk about the detail in the movie about how Snow’s dad died in the woods around District 12, because it’s making me insane. I think it was Dr Gaul who said something like he’s “lost in the trees” and I’m absolutely losing my mind over the layers of influence that moment in the forest had on Coryo.
Crassus Snow was lost in the woods of District 12 and was found again within his son. Because it was that moment of finding the guns and going after Lucy Gray that turned Coryo into his father. Where he rejected his mother’s goodness and the life he could’ve had with Lucy Gray and chose to carry out the legacy his father started with the hunger games. Snow lands on top.
The ending of the Hunger Games movie with Snow reluctantly crowing Katniss a winner and brushing aside her hair only to see a mockingjay pin is so fucking funny after reading tbosas and knowing exactly who and what is haunting him at this moment and Katniss explains “it’s from my District” yeah lmao he knows babe he’s been
They were the first things he could never control and they’ve absolutely haunted him to think about ever since
to my knowledge (someone correct me) Snow never hears Katniss sing The Hanging Tree (that’s a movie invention, and it’s not even confirmed in the movies that he’s hearing it), but those are not the only songs Lucy Gray sings … and can you imagine the slow creeping paranoia beginning to crawl back up his spine when Katniss honors Rue in much the way Sejanus honored Marcus … when she then begins to sing Deep in the Meadow, Maude Ivory’s song … when Peeta tells the story of how he fell for his girl, when she was singing, of all things, the Valley Song … not to mention all the references to mockingjays throughout the first arena (whose idea was that?) … oh, it’s delicious … the first similarity Snow could dismiss as mere coincidence (it’s not uncommon, we know, for tributes to stay with a dying peer), the second, as a product of an insular backwoods culture (right? RIGHT?) but by the third … he must have felt a ghost-chill on the back of his neck … and I LOVE it … Snow lands on top, but as soon as that burning chariot burst out of the night, he should have known … his time was up
Watching the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is realizing that despite the obvious implication that Lucy Gray is the songbird and Snow is the Snake…it’s likely the opposite.
Lucy gray controlled the snakes and used them as her weapon of choice, the snake biting him was Lucy’s kiss goodbye. She is the snake.
Snow sold Sejanus out through the jabberjay’s, they were his tool to fly back home and back into power. He is the songbird.
But at the same time…as in her Ballad, Lucy Gray flys away with the mockingjays after she sings the Hanging Tree one final time while fleeing Snow. She is physically a songbird. And Snow chose to work with Dr. Gaul, who created and controlled those snakes. He was the snake who betrayed his friend.
Who is the songbird and who is the snake? It’s unclear, but isn’t that the mystery?
Suzanne Collins has me deranged.
We know from the Ballad of Song Birds and Snakes that many of the features of the modern Hunger Games are Snow's invention, including those that motivate the districts, like prizes. It's fair to assume he likely came up with the idea for tesserae, it's an easy way to keep the districts well fed while encouraging/forcing participation and general involvement in the games. It's a great reminder, even the food you eat is linked to the games themselves. Tesserae is a type of tile work commonly associated with Romans which Collins draws a lot of inspiration from in her depiction of the Capital. It has also in the past been used as a token. In this case, you take the token of food in exchange for extra names in the bowl. Now that's fucking excellent on it's own, real neat bit of linguistic worldbuilding.
BUT what really gets me, what truly fucks me up is that Snow didn't name it that because he's like a language nerd. Tigris had to use tile buttons, tesserae buttons on his shirt during songbirds because they couldn't afford anything else. Snow inherently associates that material with poverty, specifically with the lack of food he had during that time. As a result tesserae represents poverty starvation and desperation to everyone in the districts. Snow is so god dam self obsessed he imbedded ,intentionally or not , personal fucking references to himself within the districts.
AND THAT is why Collins is so crazy to me that detail is tiny, you truly would not notice and in the grand scheme it's not that important but that's woman is on her shit and she's fucking thinking her thoughts and its genius. HER MIND UGH. truly has me messed.
Snow would drink from the same cup, to deflect suspicion. But antidotes don’t always work, which is why he wears roses that reek of perfume. Help cover the scent of blood from sores in his mouth that will never heal.
Props to Suzanne Collins for having some throw away line in one of the first chapters of The Hunger Games about there only ever having been two victors from district 12 and then never mentioning who the one was besides Haymitch and then writing a book ten years later all about who that first victor was with leaving us with just enough doubt about her fate... now that is good writing
Reading TBoSaS was an eye opening experience for me because for a minute I was like Katniss and Peeta had it so much better than Lucy and these other children who were treated like literal animals- transporting them like livestock and putting them in cages not to mention the very public, dehumanizing parades. But then I was horrified at myself because I couldn’t believe myself. It wasn’t better at all, Katniss and Peeta were brought there for the same exact purpose and putting them in fancy dresses and providing them with expensive amenities doesn’t take it away. It’s still the same horrible, wretched, gruesome tradition, I just thought it was better because it was also wrapped up nicely with a pretty bow which I guess was the whole point.
