my thoughts on how terrible the duffers are for queer baiting with byler because it IS that serious
unlike some shows, this was not a case of fans projecting onto nothing. over multiple seasons, the show invested deliberately in a dynamic built on emotional exclusivity, visual framing, narrative parallels, and dialogue that mirrors romantic storytelling conventions. mike is framed as will’s emotional anchor and vice versa; will’s feelings are textual, canon, and painfully explicit. the show invites the audience to sit inside that longing, to recognize it, to treat it seriously. and for a long time (again: over the course of SEASONS), it felt like the story was doing the same.
what makes this so egregious imo is the accumulation of intent. the camera framing. the way the blocking isolates them. how the writing repeatedly positions mike as the person who understands will best, who sees him clearly, who loves him from episode one. season four, in particular, does not just imply queerness—it foregrounds it. will’s speech in the van is constructed as a love confession in everything but name, emotionally framed as intimate, vulnerable, and life-altering. it is staged with the gravity of a turning point.
and then, at the moment where that investment could have been actually honored and made into something real, it wasn’t. the narrative retreats into comfortable heteronormative spaces, and will’s feelings are acknowledged only insofar as they can fuel his suffering, his self-erasure, his role as the quiet support system for his straight companions. the duffer brothers took a canon queer character, built his arc around unrequited love, and then refused to give that love narrative weight beyond pain.
this is where queerbaiting crosses from implication into exploitation. because the show did not merely hint—it encouraged. interviews, marketing language, and promotional framing leaned into byler discourse, allowing hope to circulate without ever setting boundaries. queer audiences were not wrong to trust what the text itself was doing. they were responding to exactly what was being shown to them. to the writing itself. to years of deliberate narrative choices that suggested resolution rather than perpetual denial.
what makes this especially damaging imo is that stranger things is not a small or niche piece of media. it is a cultural behemoth with enormous influence, particularly over young audiences. for many queer kids, will byers is not an abstract character; he is a mirror. to watch his queerness treated as something that exists only to suffer, never to be chosen, never to be reciprocated, is not neutral storytelling. it reinforces the same message queer media has been delivering for decades: that queer love is either tragic, invisible, or fundamentally incompatible with happiness.
and when fans point this out, the response is predictable. they are accused of reading too much into things, of ignoring canon, of demanding that the story bend to them. but straight romance is never accused of being “forced” when it is built on far less textual intimacy. ambiguity is only celebrated when it protects heterosexual defaults. queer readings are tolerated only when they remain hypothetical.
this is why I think queerbaiting cannot be brushed off as harmless anymore. if creators want to tell queer stories, they must be willing to tell them fully. if they want to benefit from queer audiences, they cannot do so while refusing to commit when it matters. hope is not a renewable resource. when it is cultivated carefully and then abandoned, the damage is real.
so yes, it is that serious. because what the duffer brothers did with byler is not an isolated misstep—it is a textbook example of how queerness is still used as a marketing stunt but not given the dignity to be seen as human. and queer audiences don’t deserve to still deal with being told to be grateful for the absolute worst scraps of representation that are so carefully engineered to generate engagement and profit without ever having the spine to follow through.
