Need motivation to pray? I love these reasons from Peter Kreeft…
10 Reasons to Pray
1. Only prayer can save the world.
Nothing is more relevant and responsible; nothing else can ever cure our sick world except saints, and saints are never made except by prayer.
2. God commands it.
God commands us to pray, in fact to “pray constantly”. He yearns and longs for us to pray more passionately than any earthly lover yearns for is beloved to turn her eyes and her attention to him.
3. Prayer gives Truth to our mind, Goodness to our will, and Beauty to our heart.
4. God’s honor deserves it.
5. We do not have an infinite amount of time to pray.
We are one day nearer Home today than we ever were before…We must learn to pray because infinite and uncompromising Love will not leave us alone until we do.
6. Prayer is delightful.
“There is not in the world a kind of life more sweet and delightful than that of a continual conversation with God. Those only can comprehend it who practice and experience it” - Brother Lawrence.“No eye has seen, or ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him.” (1 Cor 2:9)
7. Prayer is the way to know God.
To know anyone, you must not just know thousands of things about him, but you must know him, you must meet him, you must spend time with him.
One moment of prayer, of weak worship, confused contrition, tepid thanksgiving, or pitiful petition will bring us closer to God than all of the books of theology in the world.
8. Prayer is the essential prerequisite for all evangelization and catechesis.
We need not a knowledge about God but a knowledge of God. Where is the teacher who knows God, knows him by being in love with him? The most cynical and rebellious sinner will be silent before such a teacher.
9. Prayer is the only way to spiritual progress.
Spiritually, with every choice we move either closer to God or farther away from him. If we are “in Christ”, we are moving with the most pressing speed, for we are “in” the most dynamic man who ever walked the earth…. We must pray in order to grow, and we must grow because Infinite Love will not, cannot, settle for less than the greatest joy of which his beloved creature is capable.
10. Prayer gives life meaning and is the end and purpose of our existence.
