So here's an idea that has haunted me for years now. AU where an encounter with a powerful spirit replaces Azula's firebending with airbending, forcing her to switch sides whether she likes it or not. After all, airbenders are ~ enemies of the fire nation ~ and we know Ozai wouldn't be above pulling out that old extermination order, even against his own daughter. That leaves two options for what happens next.

1.) Forced to join the gaang, where everyone is highly suspicious of her, but also not about to miss this opportunity or condemn her to death. Also, while Aang is trying not to be happy about someone else's unhappiness, he is highkey elated not to be the only airbender anymore. (even if the other one is Azula)

2.) Lifechanging field-trip with Zuko (and Iroh)

But you know what I wholly approve of, regarding her choice? The lil Hordak figure that some cake maker had to create.

Just imagine some designer sitting there sculpting a tiny Hordak from, what, static-y images off Bow's data pad?

Re: the Harper Hall covers- yes, I meant the falling dragon/Brekkie event! I get that the series is literally over 50 years old by this point, so it's a good bit past the point where you really have to warn about spoilers, but it's still wildly out of place compared to other covers do.

It WAS very strange to see the actual cover, once I went looking for it. But I am very biased since I have known my own cover for years, and for me that represents Dragonsinger lol. Thank you, by the way, for your post! It was cool to branch out and go hunting for all the other art!

Betas are a wonderful solution to all sorts of fic-related afflictions, including and not limited to:

I’m so excited about this plot twist!  But if I tell my entire dash then they will already know about this plot twist!  But I’m so excited about this plot twist!

I changed two random place names halfway through writing and the thought of going back through every line to make sure I’ve edited them all fills me with existential dread.

I live in eternal paranoia of posting fic with typoes or grammatical mistakes.  I comb through my entire story three times.  I hit post, and click on the fic link on AO3 just to revel in seeing it up in the wild.  I instantly spot five new typoes in the first paragraph.

I want somebody whose job is to actually read this fic that I’m afraid nobody will read, damnit.  (Bonus: if they’re proud of it, they’ll probably tell their friends to read it, too.)

This dialogue feels clunky and wooden and I don’t know why and I’ve been staring at it so long I want to scream and throw it against a wall.

Look if I just don’t come back to my WIP for a day, or two, or three, or ever, it’s not like anybody’s actually going to get after me or be sad so maybe I’ll actually just never write it again.

There is a plot hole here, and I know that there is a plot hole here, and I do not know how to fill it and my cat is not a helpful sounding board for this problem.

Oh god what is even happening in this scene WHY?

I imagine Hordak getting beach sand in his ports is 10x more annoying (and potentially painful?) than getting sand in your shoe.

Oh, no. I‘m imagining it’s like getting something in your eye.

…I genuinely hope they’re more functional than that, though. Maybe like a cybernetic orifice—designed to interact with various plugs, but also designed for self-maintenance and easy cleaning. Maybe with cilia or small hairs that help keep those areas clean. Maybe with some of those phosphorescent bacteria to help maintain pH balance.

Or maybe they can just cap the damn things?! I mean? We design little caps for USB drives to keep them clean. Lens caps for cameras. Do not tell me these guys are honestly walking around with uncapped ports at all times. I hate that. I hate it so much. It makes sense on the ship, because Prime would want easy access—oh no I hate that even more.

Anon. You opened a can of worms I know you didn’t mean to open. I’m. Thinking more about those ports as metaphor now, and I really, really hate the idea that they can cap them, but Prime doesn’t let them because he wants easy access to them.

He’s. Such a monster. I hate it.

Or, conversely, they’re not designed for easy cleaning or capping. They’re designed to be cleaned and maintained via Prime-supplied pod, and any clone who fails to earn his routine maintenance has to try to clean them himself (a difficult, uncomfortable task that as potentially impossible in terms of the spinal port) or risk contamination and infection.

Which. Is not so nice.

However! The potential solution to this is a form of social grooming dedicated to port maintenance. Accomplished either between clones, or between clones and their new Etherian companions. Dome correctly, it greatly deepens social bonds and provides comfort and a sense of security to those being groomed.

There. Happier!

I really like the idea of Prime leaving the clones with messed up, potentially dangerous biological needs that are solved by forming social bonds and receiving care and engaging in mutually trusting relationships

I’m super torn about that? Mostly because the idea of them being forced into that kind of close social contact when they probably aren’t ready for it in order to preserve their health is…kind of upsetting. Those ports are very vulnerable, and exposing that kind of vulnerability—trusting someone else to take care of it, putting your health and safety in their hands—before you’re ready is a very stressful thing. That’s high octane nightmare fuel for me.

On the other hand? Hnnnnn…social grooming is nice.

I’m going to see if I can find a different way to incorporate the social grooming aspect. Because I legitimately like that for fluff and comfort.

Then again, sometimes I like nightmare fuel. Forced caretaking is great for really heart-rending angst. (Though the long-term trauma could have some long-term unpleasant affects.)

Oh! I just got an idea. Involving not-so-nice King Scorpio. I’m completely blaming you if I end up writing something for it.

Oh, no. The upsetting portion is… is “intentional” the word? Maybe. Potentially.

The point being that Prime has done things to them that have left them vulnerable and facing significant difficulties in living solitary lives in the near future. In my mind, such physical aspects would mirror the trauma of being suddenly separated from the hivemind with little to no guidance in how to establish and successfully live independent lives right out of the gate.

The sort of pseudo-silver lining being an extension of the spacebat sleep-huddle headcanon: that where they once relied on Prime for their needs, they now turn to one another, and potentially to trusted Etherian companions a la Hordak, to fulfill these needs instead. 

But initially, yes: you’re quite right in the upsetting nature of it: an entire race accustomed to almost… sleepwalking through life save for feeling devotion to Prime, now suddenly forced to take care of things they barely understand. Leading to a near-necessity of contact that they are likely afraid of, in all honesty. But that they need, in some way, lest they suffer from isolation and enforced self-care the way Hordak did for decades.

And then, of course, you can add to this the potential horror of less-savory Etherians using such things to their advantage. Which. Well. Angst is a popular genre!

EDIT: Mind you, there’s nothing stopping Entrapta from lending a helping hand in making cute lil port-cleaning bots. Always an option!

Yeah, I definitely get what the root desire behind this headcanon is? And I love that. I love the spacebats discovering that they’re social creatures and beginning to incorporate grooming behaviors and physical affection into their social interactions. I love it mirroring the trauma of disconnection from the hive mind. I love the idea that they’re touch-starved, and I want them to discover that Prime used their social natural against them by isolating them and forcing them to feel he was the only source of affection and validation. I love that. I need it, frankly.

I think the ports—for me personally—feel so highly personal that it hits closer to an angst headcanon than a comforting one. I get that it’s meant to be double-edged, both a headcanon for hurt and comfort all at once, but it really only inspires horror for me. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because Prime plugging in to their ports is so viscerally rape-y to me. Maybe it’s because I have a thing about people touching the back of my neck. Maybe it’s both.

Either way…I’m definitely going to try to find a way to incorporate the development of social grooming amongst the clones. That’s just so good and soft.

It’s, uh, probably just not going to involve the ports.

I think, in the end, a nice social grooming headcanon may be more happily achieved via their lil hair tufts. Or even their facial grooves, in a way.

But I absolutely understand the visceral distress over their ports. 

I won’t discuss how much That Scene with Catra still upsets me, because it’s honestly bordering on the kind-of-ridiculous at this point.

I‘m with you on that. I’ve decided that it didn’t actually happen, and they got out some other way. Because I can and will ignore canon I don’t like, especially if it’s not actually relevant to whatever I’m working on.

Aw, yes, their hair tufts. ^//^ Oh! And I love the facial grooves! They’re so often ignored, but it’s delightful to think they might play a role in their social interactions! I love that.

Today we went out on the water, and today I wore a bikini.

It might not seem like an accomplishment, those statements. But I have a lot of hate for my body, and of how I appear to the outside world. But I have been trying- a lot- to accept myself more. And to do what I can to change that thought process, whether it be healthy eating or an instance like this, where I asked someone to take a picture of how they see me.

And even of you look at this picture and don't see many issues, everyone sees the world differently. But getting out of our comfort zone is what makes us learn. So a step is a step, no matter how trivial.

All I am trying to say, I suppose, is find a way to love yourself. Big, small, any reason. You deserve it.
