Trying on Makeup (Masculine)

This was another assignment to try three different makeup looks, this time more masculine. Honestly, if I had the materials, I would have liked to try stubble, but I couldn’t without buying supplies, and since my character wouldn’t have it, I saw no point in doing that. SInce contouring is still a problem for me, I focused on that. I think it could have been more successful, but overall, I definitely don’t think I did too badly. 

Without makeup:

Look #1:

This was my first attempt, and it was definitely my least successful. It made my face look slightly more defined and I look a bit less round and childish, but it does not seem overly masculine to me. I like it and it is an improvement, but it was not quite what I was hoping for.

Look #2:

This attempt was a bit more successful (small improvements!) than the last. I succeeded in making my face more defined and I think I did well on shading around my jaw. I did less this time, so the changes aren’t as noticable, but I also didn’t want to make this too masculine considering that I want my character to rather androgynous. Also, I was practising this part because that is what I did the worst on with my first attempt.  

Look #3:

This attempt was by far the most successful. I think I actually did a pretty good job of making myself look masculine! Of the three, this is the one that I am most proud of. It’s also kind of weird to look at because my face is just so different. In this one, my face looks longer and more angular.

Trying Out Makeup

For this assignment, we had to try three different makeup looks. Because I struggled so much with it during class, I decided to try contouring again. Overall, I definitely think I improved a lot, although I need more practice. The pictures definitely weren’t the best, but I think I did fairly well. 

Look #1: For this one, I tried to recreate a look that I saw in a youtube tutorial that was fairly similar to what we learned in class. I didn’t notice a huge difference from my usual appearance, but my cheeks definitely seemed a bit more prominent. I think the nose part turned out especially well. I managed to make my nose seem much thinner, so I am very pleased with that part. 

Look #2: So for this one, I tried another way of doing my nose and tried to make my face appear longer. Ignoring how terrible the photos are, I think I was fairly successful. My nose looks slightly thinner than usual and my face does appear longer. (I had a lot of trouble getting a decent photo that would show it though)

Look #3: In this one, I tried once again to make my face appear longer, but I did so in a different way. I definitely noticed a difference. Part of why I went with the longer faces is that the difference is more noticeable. My face is normally so small and round that it stands out a lot more. It was actually slightly disconcerting. I also tried manipulating the appearance of my nose again and tried to make my eyebrows disappear (with limited success)

Character Development Assignment #1

- Choose one of your “quick characters” to develop further. Write a bio for the character and find images that inspire this character. Post bio and inspirations on the blog and/or in your notebook by 10am on 9/4. -

Storytime! So, I was having trouble coming up with a character, which is odd, because I’m usually pretty good at generating characters for stories and games. Trying to help me (because they’re just so amazing like that), my friends then suggested that I could use my favorite DnD character. My initial reaction was to reject the idea, because tiny, gender-ambiguous half-elf children wearing dark cloaks are not what I think of when I think about drag. But then I was like “wait,” and now, my dear non-existent readers, I introduce you to Naeris. 

On the outside they aren’t much to look at - little more than five feet of kick-ass assassin constantly hidden under cloaks in a variety of the darkest shades possible. As a rather quiet individual, if more than a little sarcastic, they often come off as standoffish to those who aren’t familiar with them. Their reserved nature and concealing outfits perfectly suit their role in the party. However, what if their cloaks are concealing much more...

Just picture it: the final event, the show, where everyone else has already come out and performed with their colorful personalities and even more colorful outfits. Then the next performer emerges. Everyone holds their breath, eager to see. And they see... a cloak? The classic mysterious figure of movie and video game legends? There is much confusion as the figure marches across the stage. They pause in the center, bending over to stage-whisper a secret. “You must be confused, just wondering why I don’t look like them. Well, I can guarantee that I look just as good, if not better. You just don’t deserve how fabulous I am.” They continue to act coy for a moment, maybe fake walking off stage, gauging the audience’s response. “But...if you really want to see, I suppose I could give you a little peek.” So they throw off the cloak, and underneath they’re all sparkly and glamorous as the rest.

I just took this from google, but you get the idea. Dark, concealing cloak (think Cloak from the Cloak & Dagger comics) with something awesome underneath. I haven’t exactly decided on what yet, but something flashy, probably in shades of green or purple because those are my favorite colors.
