There are many different types of child abuse. There is physical abuse, that can be defined by aggressive actions on a child that causes pain. Sexual abuse can be defined as touching a child sexually or engaging in sexual action with him or her to stimulate the offender. Psychological abuse, more commonly known as verbal or emotional abuse, can be defined as creating mental anguish. It is defined as psychological abuse, because it causes damage to ones mental state. What most people don’t know, is that neglect is also a type of abuse.

Tips on how you can report child abuse in your home:

Many of us would not know what to do if we were faced with this traumatic situation. First and foremost, STAY CALM. Do what is right for the situation, not what your emotions pursued you to do.

CALL 911 if this is an emergency.

#3. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING

Include everything that would be relevant to help the professionals who can assist you and the child and keep the child safe. Make sure to include dates, times and places.

4. HAVE YOUR CHILD EVALUATED. Talk to medical and psychology professionals.

5. BEGIN INVESTIGATION. Initiate law enforcement to develop an investigation for the alleged child abuse. Communicate that you are trying to protect the child from further harm, especially if abuse has been previously reported.

#6. TALK TO CPS

If the abuse is not criminal, talk to CPS (Child Protection Services)

MYTH: It’s only abuse if it’s physical

Fact: As mentioned before, there are many different types of child abuse. Negect and emotional abuse, but because they are not as noticeable as physical abuse, it is less likely for someone to put an end to it.

MYTH: Only bad people abuse their children. Fact: Not all abusers are knowingly harming their children. Some have been abused themselves as children, and don’t know another way to parent. Mental health and substance abuse can also be a factor.

MYTH: Most child abusers are strangers. Fact: Although abuse by strangers does happen, most of the time, the abuse comes from someone close to the family or who the child trusts.

MYTH: Abused children always grow up to be abusers

Fact: Abused children are more likely to do what had been done to the as adults, unconsciously repeating what they had experienced as children. Many of the survivors of abuse have a stronger motivation to protect children against what they went through.
