Final experiment:

Place lights on different locations and let them shine through my everyday objects and empty bottles I have used in my second stage experiment. And results in the lights have transformed the objects into different sizes and shapes of shadows which comes from the same objects, this has also reminded me on “different desires may create a different form of society”, if our desire changed before, our society and city will not shape or look like what it is right now. And this has been expressed by the different sizes and shapes of the shadows created by placing lights at different locations at my final experiments.

Boltanski transforms concrete political and personal history into universal artworks with an apparent human dimension, in the widest sense of the word. Working mainly with large scale theatrical installations he animates the viewer to engage physically in them. After this first phenomenological experience it is difficult not to get caught up in an emotional involvement.

Experiment (playing with shadows) Throughout the experiments I have did related to shadows, I found out that playing around with only one object makes the result of the experiments look plain. In this experiment, I have used most daily objects and some empty bottles that can be found in my room. The setting up of these objects results in shadows that looks like a city. It is a metaphor of my thinking of my research question. In assessment one, my poster sums up the meaning of desire is a force of transformation which you can't touch or feel, just like shadows. Objects that we use everyday make us what we look like and make us what we are everyday, we meet people everyday and everyone has different desire. When all the desires combine together, it creates a society, the city like shadow behind my objects is a metaphor of a city we create with our desire. It is desire - the force of transformation that transforms us to what we look like and shapes our society... It is a force of creation but also a force of transformation.

Experiment (playing with shadows)

Inspired by Tim Noble and Sue Webster, I started to do experiments with scraps or rubbish, such as some wires I’ve used left from the last semester. Reusing these materials makes me feel better than throwing them away. The experiment is simple yet not bad.

From discarded wood, welded scrap metal, broken tools, cigarette packets, soda cans and piles of trash, Tim Noble and Sue Webster make assemblages and then point light to create projected shadows of people standing, sitting, smoking, drinking or anything easily recognizable. Every debris is precisely set in place, taking into consideration its distance from the wall, and its angle with the spotlight. The result is surprising and powerful as it redefines how abstract forms can transform into figurative ones.

Experiment (playing with shadows)

Inspired by Kumi Yamashita, I started to do shadow experiments with simple object such as paper. Although the results don’t look as good as hers but somehow the shapes I created makes me think of very high density buildings.

Experiment (playing with shadows) Inspired by Diet Wiegman, I have made experiments of making the water in a bowl moving in different directions. And with different currents, the water reflects light to the wall differently, creating different shapes and patterns...

Kumi Yamashita was born in Japan, but lives in New York.  She constructs single or multiple objects and places them in relation to a single light source. The complete artwork is therefore comprised of both the material (the solid objects) and the immaterial (the light or shadow). Something about the simplicity of this art, is so attractive and mesmerizing!

Diet Wiegman is a Dutch artist that uses a combination of sculpture and light to create fascinating shadow art projected onto walls. Born in 1944, he began experimenting with light sculptures in the 1980s, inspiring a generation of artists after him to also explore the art style (e.g., Tim Noble & Sue Webster, Kumi Yamashita).

Week 5: what do we desire? Freedom

Shadow art experiments:

Inspired by those shadow arts, i have decided to express myself on the poster with shadows because shadow itself is something that is created through transformation. I have cut papers into different shaped and put them under lights, then take pictures of the shadows. In these experiments, i have destroyed the papers, in other words cutting them into any shapes i want, then through light, i transformed the shapes into shadow. So my desire, eg. the result of the shadow art, is a force of letting me transform or destroy papers into another form.

I started to do more research on artworks that shows the relationship between transformation and creation, and I found some interesting shadow artworks made by Rashad Alakbarov, he is a shadow artist who likes to make shadow arts by using the combination of all any kinds of object, and through light, it transforms those objects into shadows which show a totally different shape. His artworks are also good examples of looking at creation as transformation of shapes or even the matter of objects.

Look back to week 2 when I created a poster cut with hole’s with the shape hole, I was trying to express when people are creating something, they are somehow damaging or transforming something into other shapes. In other words, creation is a transformation of the matter of objects. So when we think desire as a force of creation, it can also be seen as a force of transformation.

Then I started to read articles and do research on the word creation. And I found two interesting articles.

The first article stated that “Artists nowadays begin to use everyday objects as inspiration, transforming them into works of art through the use of different mediums, such as paint, sculpture, and printmaking.”

The second says “transformation, in other words, is manifestly an inherent process in any artistic creation”. 

So both articles see artistic creation as transformation of objects, and sums up supporting my view of creation as transformation, in other words, desire is a force of transformation.
