Business card idea
Having this one design for the back but the front having multiple cards that all have different sketches of mine as I don't have a logo. But if the name is kept in the same font then this should work fine.

Collabortation
My collaboration for this project was with Brandon Falconer - with him creating the particles for my animation.
For him he asked me to do a walk cycles and some hand sketches in a specific poses. However he had planned for me to do the walk cycle for him after his testing process but once this was done he decided he no longer wanted the walk cycle and told me not to do one.
He did, however, still want the images drawing.
Above are the images that I drew for him - drawn to specific request of poses for his hand.
Budget for film.
Including visual effects. I changed the amounts from the suggested as I felt being students and still learning the outcome wouldn't be as professional so the money should reflect this.
I chose to only add in the most important aspects that I would show a client into my schedule. Such as animatic, character designs etc. Along with the big parts as the animated scenes.
I was unable to settle on an idea at the start and set myself the date for the animatic when I came up with my first idea, which is why I was unable to keep to these dates. However once I had settled on my idea I was able to set more achievable dates.
During the third week of this project I was asked by Brandon to draw up some sketches for him to work off for his project, I was able to get these done quickly but still good quality for him. Having spoke about what he wanted from me I was able to work around doing this for him.
I also planned, as you can see from the schedule, to give him all the frames he needed to do the particles during the time I was doing clean up. This means I wouldn't be waiting to complete compositing.
Blurb for 'What is Animation'
Synopsis
Visual representation of giving life to characters through a flour sack changing his shape to 'create worlds' and 'make the impossible, possible'.
Directed, Animated & Designed by Kelly Marie Holmes | www.kelly-marie.net
Particles by Brandon Falconer | www.brandonfalconer.com
Music : Kai Engel -Avenge The Fallen
Influences
Biggest influence was 'Thought of you' by Ryan Woodward - https://vimeo.com/14803194
The movement and transition from each character was one of the biggest roots of where my own idea came form.
Background
The use of multiple characters was to test myself in my own character animating, needing to showcase different personalities, weight and movement in one single film.
How the film was made
Largely done by me, animating & compositing with help for the particle movements from Brandon Falconer.
All animation is hand drawn with digital clean up.
Loop title
Here is the final title animation - the loop is the girl writing.
Here is the looped animation for the title. I chose to colour her in as I wanted to separate her from the other characters working with the illusion that she is the one creating the animation.
Due to there being a lot of people and not pre-booking the rostrums at uni were fully booked when I went to book time in. However to overcome this an not put my schedule I decided to create my own rostrum. I think that this worked really well and saved me a lot of time.
Video tutorial for title - I wanted the title to look like it was being written by the girl who is sat writing/drawing.
I followed this tutorial - changing the layers to 'what is animation'. this is the first time I have done this.
What is Animation - full film without title
This is the first version with using text. I am really happy with how this is looking especially with the transitions that Brandon has done. I have not yet added the title.
Transition test 02
This is much more what I was thinking - it's the same movement as the first test but this time the 'flour' is darker - which when working against the background and black lined characters it works better.
I'm really happy with what Brandon has managed to do I think it really works well with my animations and towards the idea I had originally thought.
Transition test 01 -
This is the first test of the particles that Brandon has given me and I have been able to put with my animations. I like how it transforms but with it being so white it is disappearing into the parchment. I have asked him to darken the particles.
Transition idea 2D...
here is a test for how I could do the transitioning of the characters in 2D. This is more of a backup plan for if Brandon is unable to do the particles for me/ they don't work/ don't turn out how I wanted.
I've added two of the scenes for the final animation together -the knight/dragon and bunny/turtle. The background jumps due to an error on my part of how I positioned the background....plus there is no transitions as of yet...i am going to do another test with the hand-drawn versions that I have done until I have the final ones from Brandon.
However I am really happy with how this looks at the moment, thought I do still agree with my thought earlier of adding in a few frames from when the knight falls to show him actually getting up before I have the transition of him actually standing up.
Rough pencil test of my knight and dragon together.
From this test I really believe that I do need to add more frames from the knight dropping to him standing up. What I wanted was to add another flour transition in....however I think it will look better if I have a few frames of him going to stand up > transition > and then being stood up.
Animatic 03
Cleaned up frames of rabbit and turtle on the selected parchment background.
